The Sicatoka Posted October 12, 2022 Author Posted October 12, 2022 I'm glad they put the qualifier "G5" on there, because for P5 invites it's "do you bring as much as you take" to the conference (revenue) potluck. See: OU/UT to SEC and USC/UCLA to B1G. 2 Quote
The Sicatoka Posted October 12, 2022 Author Posted October 12, 2022 The following is an excerpt from a ForumComm article about a Fargo radio (Bison 1660) conversation with then-outgoing NDSU president Bresciani: Quote "In a town of a quarter of a million people (including the entire Fargo-Moorhead metro area) you can only raise so much money and I think we're probably getting near that point, so it's not as simple as, 'Well, you'll raise more money if you're FBS.' I don't know that that's the case," Bresciani said. "We'd have to find an affiliation that didn't bankrupt us," Bresciani told the radio station. "A lot of FBS programs are in real trouble on the cost of the program not being sustained by the revenue that is produced by it. So it would, for us, would require a league in that the television revenues were substantial, that our fans could still go to away games, that our fans would recognize the schools by name and reputation and that the cost would be minimal, of any at all, at the end of the day. "That's a heck of a lot to ask. But for NDSU, we don't believe that we have the wherewithal to get into a situation that's going to require a lot of new resources." "A lot of teams and leagues are getting in trouble with the amount of money being poured into athletic programs, which means it's being taken away from other parts of the university if it's appropriated dollars," Bresciani said. "I think that's not going to remain a sustainable model for a lot of schools at the FCS or FBS level, for that matter. And the Group of Five, in particular, are getting a lot of criticism as to how much appropriated money is being spent to subsidize athletics. "We're pretty darn healthy. When you consider the money that is being raised for student scholarships, and then the formula for funding that we get from the state for those student-athletes, we are virtually breaking even on athletics. We are growing our own funds, if you will, to run the athletic program. But that said, if the right opportunity came up -- and right being defined as one that wouldn't require a lot of new resources -- we'd have to take a look at it and you always have to be ready. "When these opportunities come up, they usually don't say, 'Get back to us after six months of studying.' It's usually, 'Get back to us this afternoon.' And so you have to be thinking about where those opportunities might come up doing your analysis and whether they'd be affordable and productive and good for our athletic program. And if the phone rings, be ready." I'd say Bresciani lays out the formula -> " ... would require a league in that the television revenues were substantial, that our fans could still go to away games, that our fans would recognize the schools by name and reputation and that the cost would be minimal, of any at all, ... " - "substantial" revenues (for expenses) - relatively easy (fan) travel - known rival schools - "mimimal" cost increases What's he say four times about a requirement of a potential move to FBS? - We'd have to find an affiliation that didn't bankrupt us - that our ... cost would be minimal, - we don't believe that we have the wherewithal to get into a situation that's going to require a lot of new resources ... - and right being defined as one that wouldn't require a lot of new resources Quote

Here's again where I look to the Summit/MVFC rep on the NCAA "transformation" committee, namely (former) NDSU president Dean Bresciani. What's he know and telling to Armacost, Cook, and Josh Fenton? I know what Bresciani said to Bison 1660 (above) and it's summed up as "beware the cost". Quote

The Sicatoka Posted October 13, 2022 Author Posted October 13, 2022 FBS in this region has what I'll call the "UND in BSC" problem: The closest FBS G5 schools (MWC, C-USA, SunBelt, MAC) are 700 miles away, and their conferences go out from there. Sound familiar? Sound like "UND in BSC"? OK, so full membership is costly (travel) and hurts fan travel. So why not FB-only membership? Quote 20.02.9 Football Bowl Subdivision Conference. A conference classified as a Football Bowl Subdivision conference shall be comprised of at least eight full Football Bowl Subdivision members that satisfy all bowl subdivision requirements. An institution shall be included as one of the eight full Football Bowl Subdivision members only if the institution participates in the conference schedule in at least six men's and eight women's conference-sponsored sports, including men's basketball and football and three women's team sports, including women's basketball. To a G5 conference that might get poached, a FB-only doesn't help maintain FBS status. You need 8 all-sport members. But Bresciani did lay out how it could be done. -> " ... would require a league in that the television revenues were substantial, that our fans could still go to away games, that our fans would recognize the schools by name and reputation and that the cost would be minimal, of any at all, ... " That sounds like "do it yourself" in the upper great plains, but be sure to capture someone in the MSP and DEN markets. Quote

Kab Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 Just listened to an espn guy get asked if ndsu should move up by izzo he said it depends on your goals play For national championship or play the outback whatever bowl on a Tuesday at 3pm if the upper Midwest did form it’s own conference they would still play in the same type of bowl game ndsu wouldn’t be happy playing the same teams as they do now during the year, their ego thinks bigger Quote

Drop a pin in at the MT/ND/Canada border point; swing a 600 mile arc: Minnesota and Wyoming Drop a pin in at Nashville; swing a 600 mile arc; you have everything from MSP to DFW to Orlando to Philly. The Sicatoka Posted October 13, 2022 Author Posted October 13, 2022 Great idea, wrong line-up. Close, but wrong. (Mo State wants SunBelt; UNI is questionable at best to want to go west; NM State is going C-USA.) https://twitter.com/TheSnowBelt Quote

It is hilarious watching how far of a reach it would be to actually consider some of the names that get tossed out from those two fan bases all to not have to say USD or UND. Edit: And this isn't to say that I think UND is going FBS. But they are well ahead of some of the other names that get tossed around (and have already moved or are in the process). And I don't rule out a regional-type scenario where a group of nearby teams find a way to move into the G5. Obviously not allowed given current rules, but the only thing constant is change. And based on geography, it might be the most attainable scenario. 1 Quote
