Cratter
It's just a redirect set up by the owner of that domain, doesn't require any cooperation from the owner of the destination domain. jimdahl
Looks like your guess was wrong. Sorry if I was unclear, but not wrong Since there's a lot of confusion here about how domain names work, I was trying to clarify the technical point that flickertails.com redirecting to undsports.com doesn't mean the former is owned by UND. I could similarly make siouxsports.com redirect to undsports.com with no additional cooperation from UND. Obviously, that point doesn't preclude it from being owned by UND. nodakhoops
I'd like to hear more why Roughriders wasn't chosen. It was obviously a top choice and I have to think it's more than just a domain name thing as there are lots of different domain names you can choose. I also hope the releasing of these names and the Internet mess it created shows UND just how dumb opening the vote up to the mass public would be. I maintain the vote should be made by students, alumni, donors, season ticket holders, champions club members and that's it. If you aren't on that list donate $10 and become a donor. If UND opens this vote up to the general public get ready for an even bigger embrassment than this was...
jimdahl
Notice that: 1) Padilla CRTs registrations began as early as April 8, 2) UND specifically said names were excluded based on domain name availability, and 3) most known Padilla CRT registration were of the form "undNICKNAME.com" or "goNICKNAME.com" It wouldn't be the least bit surprising if popular names like RoughRiders were excluded because they were too popular (and thus had the undroughriders.com and goroughriders.com variants scooped up long ago). It would be somewhat ironic if domain name speculation led to UND skipping all the early favorites and instead choosing something unpopular enough that it was still available. It's already been stated that the public will be able to vote for the finalists which I don't agree with. Fine, you let every Tom, Dick, and Harry submit suggestions. But you see how many people were just throwing out derogatory or offensive names because they don't care about UND. Now their going to go ahead and allow these same people a vote to choose the winning name?!? I just don't get it. At this point, the vote should be limited to students, alumni, faculty, donors, and season ticket holders and that's it. People who have a vested interest in the University. nodakhoops
Thanks for the info Jim. Great logic by UND........these ones are to popular so let's pick the least popular because there are more domain options.....yikes. Also just read the herald article and Karl does say the vote will be open to everyone.......what a complete joke. Just wait for that vote, this is going to get ALL OVER the Internet. I'm sure glad Kelly wants to be that inclusive where the whole country can vote on our schools nickname. There will end up being more people with no connection to UND voting on the name than people with a connection after deadspin and all the other sites pick it up. As a supporter I am not to thrilled about that idea.

UNDErmines
I think the publicity is actually really good for UND. I see nothing in the process that makes the university look bad. Publicity is a good thing. If you want to strike back against The Man, though, you should start looking at the domain names that they bought, and then vote en masse for a name that's not on their list. If there's any thought that it's a rigged contest, or even a directed contest, you can blow it out of the water. Public internet votes are a very bad idea, but the p.r. firm doesn't appear to know research. All the better, because it gives us a chance to influence the outcome. You're all welcome to join me as I assemble and mobilize the Ermine Army, the greatest Mulstilidae force ever assembled. We shall UNDermine all opponents! yababy8
Exactly what I have been thinking. They must think our IQs are pretty low. Exactly! They must... Kind of like how they are trying to get some sort of 'credit' for being "transparent" by publishing the raw list of suggestions in an attempt to demonstrate innocence like the murderer who throws their hands in the air above the slain corpse of a victim as the cop flashes his spotlight on them.. People are so easy... Chewey
http://mweb.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-hockey/25174416/north-dakotas-search-for-new-team-name-corrupted-by-snarky-publicOur university is becoming more of a joke each day! That's because it's being run by a really big weasel and a bunch of smaller weasels. "North Dakota" says it all. Period. The "controversy" orobject of the policy and the litigation and the surrender agreement was ridding the school of disparaging NA imagery. "Fighting Sioux" is not the nickname"Fighting Sioux" is not on the uniforms. "Fighting Sioux" is not on the arena. No offensive, hostile, abusive imagery is being used by the school or its teams. Not having a nickname and everyone knowing the reason why it is much more "marketable" than a lame nickname (insert state of being/condition/weather phenomenon) chosen only because one wants to "encourage" fans not to yell "Fighting Sioux" anymore. After having the best, nothaving a nickname and logo shows respect for the former and, more importantly, shows respect for the Sioux people who gave it. Let people indulge theircreative muse and emote or read into it what they want. If they read "Fighting Sioux" into it and are offended then they've themselves to blame. Nothaving a nickname was never part of any controversy; having the Fighting Sioux nickname was.People's knowledge of why UND has no nickname would spurrecruiting because it would show backbone, respect for the Sioux, respect for tradition and history. The whole marketing argument is a complete sham.Marketing is the art of deriving strategies that make people want what you're selling; you cater to what people want. I don't think it's a stretch to saythat 80 to 90 percent of the fan base, alumni/ae and other "stakeholder" groups want "North Dakota". Yet, Kelley and some on this board are going to arguethat some lame nickname that 80 to 90 per cent do not want is really going to catch on and benefit UND and all impacted groups? Marketing against what 80 to 90 per cent of the impacted constituencies want = positive/beneficial/satisfactory result? This can be true only in the world of some academic and like minded sycophants who have no grasp at all on what "marketing" is and what it is supposed to do. 1

First time I can honestly say it is with some reservation I sign the check. Kelley is a complete joke...has been almost from day 1 and has turned UND into a local, regional and national embarrassment due to his complete lack of leadership and competency.

The Sicatoka
Folks need to read and understand my signature: The NCAA, the hyper-retentive, hyper-detail-checking group, that micromanages every detail of every event, that made Scheel's Arena in Fargo put "NCAA" stickers over the "Dakota Magic Casino" logos on the cup holders at the seats, did not put Marco Hunt on the ice with UND in Boston by mistake. The NCAA knew exactly what and why they were doing it. They knew UND pushed for Marco Hunt to be removed from the NCHC approved officials list. They knew Marco Hunt wasn't happy about it. So what did the NCAA do? They put Marco Hunt on the ice with UND as the game official for a national semifinal. That was no mistake. That was a message from the NCAA to UND saying pick a nickname so we don't have to keep hearing the "S" word, or you'll keep getting "the Marco Hunt treatment" from us. Conspiratorial? Sure. But the NCAA doesn't make "mistakes" like that in championships. They send messages.
