NCHC Semifinals-Here come the Dawgs

Duluth survives being down late twice and rallies to get to Grand Forks next Saturday.  Sorry Miami, you aren't coming back in Denver.

Both teams are securely in the NCAA tournament, so should make for a good tilt.

Stop the Plante line and you win the game.  Bottom line.  Play for another 60 minutes and one more game at home for the seniors the following week.

It's a good thing this game is being played on Saturday instead of Friday.

On Friday's this season, UMD is 2-0 against UND, winning both games in OT.
On Saturday's this season, UND is 2-0 against UMD, outscoring UMD 9-2 in the process.

One thing that may make a difference is we no longer have 3 vs 3 OT. Five on five OT likely favors us since we have so much depth

Is it a Friday/Saturday thing or a Game1/Game2 thing? Would think lineup depth has a say in the latter.

Anything can happen in the first game of a weekend. In the second game our depth shines through.

It is only one game.

I know. That’s my point. The whole Friday vs Saturday record thing doesn’t matter because we aren’t playing the “Saturday” game after having played one on Friday. Both teams will be fresh for this Saturday game.

Looking ahead to this weekend I’d like to optimistically think that the flu has run its course thru the team and they all have built up herd immunity. (I’m assuming more than 3 guys had gotten the flu but those guys recovered enough before Friday’s game)

Jim Erickson and Jake Brandt doing PxP with Alex working an MLS game. Too bad our opponent isn't Cloud.

I like Jim, better than the old PxP guy at SCSU

Jim Erickson is one of my favorites in hockey play by play.  He called a ton of games at the Minnesota tournament and didn't miss a beat.

I'd like them to bring in Ben Holden sometime.  He's very good as well.

I don’t think there was a worse combo than Jim Rich and Geno. I really liked the other SCSU guy that filled in for Heinert for that Saturday Mercyhurst game. Should’ve asked him back.

Holden and the Starman was pretty damn good.

Honestly, I don't think Doc Emrick himself would have a prayer with Geno, half the time you can tell he's had a couple drinks before broadcasts.  Jim Rich turned super homer when he was doing games in Stearns County.  And his crescendos during moments that lead up to a goal or quality scoring chance is darn near unbearable, like he's yelling into the mic.

there isn't a room with enough cigarettes that could handle Jim AND Ben...but you can dream i guess...make it happen!

That's a spot-on take.  Sounds a bit like the two college kids doing the call during the Holy Cross-Minnesota upset.

I love that we are playing Duluth leading into the tournament. At this point in the season, if you can't shut down a high octane line like the Plante line, then you are going to struggle against the Wolverines or Spartans. Great practice to see where we are at with our Dzone coverage and rush defense against great players. Obviously playing the rush hasn't been spectacular for a few weeks but I think we will shore that up.

I’m thinking some coaches are better at match-up strategy than others, particularly as home team.  It will be interesting to see how Jax and staff handle that Saturday.  They have to figure out, first, which players would be most effective against the Plante line, then make those match-ups happen, despite Sandy’s efforts prevent that

Is the Plante line a big enough threat to shake up the lines and try to neutralize them? Something like James LW, Josephson C, Croal RW? Could always throw Young on the right if you wanted at least one RH stick out there. I assume the coaches trust the 200-foot game of the whole squad and can use the last change to get the line out there they want when the Plantes are on the ice, but might be worth considering.
