I want someone who has won a national title as a player or coach. I do realize bubba met that requirement but if you look at UND guys to me it’s Luke S and Schimdt only. I do have a desire for new blood in the program though.

Schmidt has been gone long enough and developed enough connections at the highest level with his stops that I think there would be less UND ties to his staff than one would think.

If they are going to move quickly (as they should), curious how that time line would effect some of the names thrown out here.

Oh Baldwin is one I’ve always thought of because of Chaves but he didn’t do too well in Cal Poly

But he did do well (as an actual head coach) at Central Washington and Eastern Washington. He’s most intriguing in my opinion. The Cal Poly situation with him is unfortunate, but many good coaches would fail at Cal Poly.

He's my top choice and he remembers what it was like to have meaningful playoffs game when the Alerus was rocking. He could bring Steve Huber with him as DC or in some capacity on the defensive side of the ball.

Not a fan only because I DON’T think his track record as defensive coordinator is good enough. And he’s never been a head coach. Hiring a guy because of his connections and not his own intrinsic ability is a bad bad idea.

Agreed

That's a fine opinion to have because neither of ours matey a whole lot in the grand scheme of this. I think his connections, ambition and success outweigh that. It isn't everything but being able to fill out a staff with quality coaches who have had success at a high level is important to success. It also won't be the only box that needs to be checked.

I assume you mean head coach at the college level, which is a fair ask, but right out of college, he was a high school head coach for a few years. Decades ago and a different level, so doesn't mean much and doesn't change make him any more or less qualified, just a footnote on his past.

Yes, been mentioned many times he’s never been a collegiate head coach, but I didn’t clarify that in my most recent post.

A guy like Beau Baldwin - who has actually been a collegiate head coach at the FCS, and won a national championship, would also have a ton of connections, from Eastern Washington but also time with FBS programs/staffs at California (Cal) and Arizona State (ASU). Give me Beau.

I would be all for Baldwin. With him you at least know we won’t see him coach scared in big games. His teams at EWU were super aggressive.

I bet we could be pretty good offensively right away with him, especially if he can retain a couple current players and with the portal likely being more flooded than usual.  With his connections, might be able to put together a solid defensive staff.

His defenses at EWU were maybe worse than ours this year.

Guy could recruit some QBs though.

Maybe Chaves guy said yes and then that got the ball rolling on "let's have a talk Bubba"?

I believe you might be correct although the let’s have a talk negotiations reportedly had been concluded before Thanksgiving. If Chaves has already made his decision, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Baldwin. They’ve worked together when Baldwin’s team won a national title at East Wash. Hopefully, they can make an announcement tomorrow so new coach can contact recruits.
