Getting a seed is currently a better indication that you will compete.

Nice....so a lot like d2 and Northwest Missouri State: Not getting a participation ribbon in a water down division and waiting 2 year of missed playoffs before firing the coach.

Bubba has two conference titles so hopefully the new guy can do better than three conference titles. Hopefully the guy takes the program on an upward projectary from when he took over. Unlike the NWMS guy. Who took one at the top and only took it downward.

Yeah trying to say its not high standards to fire a coach after missing two straight years of playoffs. Especially when he took over a program that has the most titles in D2. And they had won multiple right before he took over. I consider that low standards. Maybe that's just me.

UND1983
But seriously, the guy was 65-22 at D2 level and got canned. Because the athletic department expects championships. Are we so far gone that we don't even expect championships anymore?

Just think it wouldn’t take many low scores to drive team gpa below 3.3. the only accredited basket weaving major was the underwater discipline. UND92,96
I realize there are several important differences in the two eras, such as the state of the program when they took over, but it's nevertheless interesting that Bubba's current winning percentage after nearly 11 full seasons (.559) is actually lower than what Pat Behrns' was at the time he was fired at the end of his sixth season (.571). Behrns was 8-3 in this second-to-last season, but followed that up with a 3-8 record in his final season, with an embarrassing 49-0 loss to NDSU to end the season, and that was enough to send him packing. But then again I'm sure Behrns didn't have three years left on his contract at the time.
sioux24/7
Would people be in favor of giving the keys to Fruechte? I get wanting to get out of the program but he only has one year in the program. Has done a good job with the offense, in my opinion. Maybe didn’t choose everyone’s favorite QB but they’ve done well. Doesn’t have any head coaching experience maybe a negative. Even the hockey team has ready-made excuses for not hanging green banners. It is very sad.

Counterpoint - The right coach raid's his current program's signing class and we grab 15 guys from the portal and infuse an immediate talent boost while building a recruiting base that brings us better all-around talent. And also...you're only talking offense with player retention...because chances are Fruechte would entirely re-boot the defense so those players will likely be evaluating their futures regardless. Going to be a lot of transfers out this off season. And we have we almost zero chance of winning more than one playoff game next year without some drastic changes. Not sure we are even .500 next year. Next year is a lost year anyway, just like this one. At this point I'm ready to roll the dice on a change/reboot. But then again I'm sure Behrns didn't have three years left on his contract at the time. Behrns was an interesting guy. He was a great recruiter. His assistants at the time didn’t have a lot of D2 experience. UND recruited a number of very good skill players (Willis Jacob, Tracy Martin, Milsen Jones) and won recruiting battles against NDSU. They recruited a number of D3 guys that looked great on paper especially linemen who couldn’t move. I thought Dave Olson and Richman were pretty good coaches but we just didn’t have the team talent or depth. Tom Clifford used to stop in my office now and then while he was waiting for George Schubert to play handball. We had a conversation about our FB struggles and I brought that up. (I also told Pat the same thing after he was let go and he agreed). More than anything, Behrns had lost to the Bison every year after his initial win. After UND he was an assistant at Utah State and eventually HC at UNO where he had some very good teams.
shep
I had a bar conversation with the big nose guard Randy (can't recall last name) about Behrns. He said the guy could sell ice to Eskimos, but he wasn't a great X and O guy.

The ceiling next year will be .500, but that seems unlikely. We can talk in absolutes. Burn the program to the ground, Bubba! Go team GPA!
