Don't athletes have a higher average GPA than the non athlete students?

I'm pretty sure the average gpa of athletes at UND is higher than the general student population.

Then they shouldn't have a problem earning an academic scholarship (some do get them), rather than having a scholarship fund set up ONLY for athletes..... That's the difference here.

In their defense, there isn't really anything for a donor to donate to at NDSU that would do any good in advancing academics.  Saying that, I predict that absolutely nothing will happen.  The fact that Port brought it up makes it even less likely to get any attention as the guy and his blog have zero credibility.  He's a political bomb thrower know for his hatred of higher education and thus has marginalized himself.  UND might as well start doing this same thing.   NDSU plays fast and loose with the rules constantly and suffers zero repercussions.

I agree with everything but the last line.  But we will just agree to disagree on that as neither will change the others mind.

Does this sound like it was intended for supporting athletic scholarships?

SECTION 6.

A new section to chapter 15-10 of the North Dakota Century Code is created and
enacted as follows:
Definition.
For purposes of this Act, projects dedicated to the advancement of enhanced academics
include investments in research, scholarship, technology, endowed chairs, and investments in
educational infrastructure, not to include new capital construction projects.

Yes, because while the student athlete is granted a scholarship based on their on-field performances, they are ultimately in school to earn an education.  Most athletes won't go on to play as a pro, but most will get their degree.  Also, the scholarships are contingent on maintaining a certain GPA (Not sure what GPA is required to be honest with you.... it's been a LONG time since I was talking athletic scholarships with anyone... but 2.5 seems stuck in my head)

I thought it was a 2.0 and they were raising it up to 2.3, but I could be wrong as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

You know, it's a good thing NDSU didn't try to use this program to buy art for the new STEM building. Can you imagine the outrage?

Well that didn't take long.. 50% hair cut for UND and FU only and specific language against athletic scholarships.  And of course they will take it as the legislature is out to get them unbelievable how tone def the FU leadership is...

NOTE:  This is not the final bill - just the house version...  more to come.

The House voted 76-16 last week to pass House Bill 1151, renewing the Higher Education Challenge Fund on the condition that funds are no longer available for athletic scholarships.

50% hair cut - FU/UND - all other schools no change.

and the amount designated for FU and the University of North Dakota would be cut to $5 million each, down from twice that. The other nine colleges would again receive $1 million each.

So.... Thanks to FU's complete ineptitude, both universities get punished if this goes thru.

The sponsor of the bill said its was perfectly legal what ndsu did. It was the piss ant whining that UND did that screwed everyone.

Link? And UND asking for clarification on how athletic scholarships advance academics is whining?

It was probably legal, but it wasn't the intended purpose of the money.  The money was supposed to support academics, not athletics.  Since a couple of schools didn't understand that, it sounds like the Legislature is making themselves a little more clear.  But get it straight, the money was never intended to help support athletics in any way.  But maybe regular students don't need financial help at NDSU, only the athletes are important enough to get scholarships.

Where was that said? I didn't see it in the article.

I did hear the mighty 790 KFGO talk about it on all the talk shows last week. Your familiar with that one, the home of the bison. I do t think you need to look any further than the city limits of Fargo if you want to point fingers.

I'll sit back and wait for that link

Pretty clear message from the State House.

NDSU appears to have money issues even sponsoring football and basketball:

The FOI request says that they only gave out 58 equivalent full schollies for football. They are allowed 63, but must have 57 to count for FBS teams.

The BSA project is several million short.

The FargoDome football office remodel still owes NDSU's general fund.

Lt Gov Wrigley grants extra money to NDSU, probably as a favor to Morton who gave money for NDSU football scholarsips. Wrigley, if he's running for governor, wouldn't want to piss off Morton and his employer, Microsoft, as both could be key contributors for his election campaign. NDSU badly needs the money, in spite of what you hear from Bison trolls.

Quick question, how much money does the football program bring in for the other programs after all the football bills are paid?  not trolling - serious question

Don't have exact figures, just that our FB is like your M Hockey.  They both carry the rest.  The way all schools report their athletic revenues and expenses are asinine.  The big different between UND and NDSU is that you guys charge your students about double the student fees that NDSU does.

Well. Twice the school=twice the price.

Sorry, that was just a little too easy to not swing at. :whistling:

Actually, the big difference is UND provides a lot more opportunities for student athletes, particularly on the women's side, in non-revenue sports.

At UND last year, there were 449 total unduplicated participants in athletics with 244 being on the men's side and 205 being on the women's side.

At NDSU, there were 411 total unduplicated participants in athletics with 282 on the men's side and 129 on the women's side.

The breakdown on that is 54% men / 46% women at UND and 69% men / 31% women at NDSU.

Talk about a joke.  Would love to see the surveys that NDSU uses to justify that the "interest" for women's athletic opportunities are low that they can pull that off.  They continue to be one of the only schools in the nation that uses the outdated "Interest and Abilities" for compliance to Title IX.  Wonder if the growth in girls hockey within North Dakota and Minnesota is something that future students at NDSU would be interested in having an opportunity to participate in at the collegiate level...

NDSU excels in the non-revenue sports and you guys not so much.  So you can have your participation ribbons.

Way to not address what he said Dan, stupid comment again.

Heard any more about UND football signees that are ineligible right now?  Your last story was fascinating!

Hey dan, instead of continueing the drumbeat of ripping on UND and pumping your chest about NDSU and their successes, why don't you actually use your eyes and brain, read the sentences you are commenting on, and actually comment on what is being discussed.  Your 3rd grade responses to adult topics really make you to look the fool.  Welcome to an adult conversation.  If that is to much for you to handle, head back over to Bisonville with the other 20 yr olds.  Might fit in better over there, intelectually! :)
