Sundog Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 As long as I'm on a roll, I'll opine that a nickname is defined as "a familiar or shorter form of a proper name." As such, I think "UND" and "North Dakota" would each qualify as a nickname to the official name of the University of North Dakota. Quote
Csonked Out Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 As long as I'm on a roll, I'll opine that a nickname is defined as "a familiar or shorter form of a proper name." As such, I think "UND" and "North Dakota" would each qualify as a nickname to the official name of the University of North Dakota. A nickname is very important for any university from a marketing and business perspective. It gives potential students, athletes, and fans something to associate with on a much broader basis than just the name of the university. It also allows for much more memorabilia to be sold, which is $ for the school. I will guarantee that there will be a new nickname in place "if" the Fighting Sioux is retired. To much money is on the line for no nickname to be decided upon. Quote
bigskyvikes Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 You wish to "opine" you have to stop watching the spewing Factor! I still like the North Stars or Fighting U "the U" Quote
darell1976 Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Just thought people should know. According to the settlement, if UND was allowed to use Sioux with say Spirit Lake. If their tribal council voted against the name in the future UND would have to retire the name...again. Do we really want to go down this road again. No Spirit Lake Sioux no UND Sioux of Spirit Lake. Its either Fighting Sioux (the way it is) or nothing (or a new name) nothing to do with Indian logos or names again. Quote

dakota fairways Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Sorry, those of you who want "The U"... Miami just got a whole lotta bad reps and they call themselves "The U". Fail. Quote
tnt Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Sorry, those of you who want "The U"... Miami just got a whole lotta bad reps and they call themselves "The U". Fail. Yeah, you would think the NCAA would take care of "real" problems before they decide to take on imaginary ones. The NCAA is a complete joke, and if Miami doesn't get something close to the death penalty, they will become even moreso. How do the administrators in the NCAA look themselves in the mirror every morning? Quote
tnt Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 How about Roughnecks? It is original and can be related with North Dakota's Oil Boom. rough·neck noun 1. a rough, coarse person; a tough. 2. any laborer working on an oil-drilling rig. Compare roustabout ( def. 4 ) . I see there is a show on television called "Arctic Roughnecks". As previously mentioned, not sure how the women's teams would feel about that name. Personally, I don't mind Roughnecks or Wheatkings. Mamba Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Just use "North Dakota" as was the planbefore the rocket scientists from the ND legislature chimed in. Then let sometime pass, heal the wounds, only then consider a new nickname. Insist that itbe as unique as was Quote
fee_0405 Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Why on Earth would I want to harm my own institution. UND is not just a sports team i follow it's a school I attended, it's a place that gave me opportunities I wouldn't have had other wise, and it's an important part of my resume. The more notoriety and prestige that UND gains the more impressive my resume becomes. What happened to UND is tragic but we must move on, and if all UND is to you is a sports team then go follow someone else. It gave you opportunity? No, you paid for it and earned it. Yes, its important as an institution to me, but I do not think that I'm willing to give more money to a system that would treat its students, alumni, and fans so poorly. You want to give money to an AD and president that don't fight for your values? I don't want to pay the salaries for the Bridges profressors. I'm sure UND will still raise plenty of money, but I do not think people who disagree with this decision should in any way donate. I think that is the problem with this damn state; no one stands up for anything. We're those heavily subsidized, heavily Medicared Red-Staters. We got those assholes who put up the signs that say "Ethanol makes you an American." They need to feel the anger where it counts. Ideally, I would like a debate to start in this state over the entire University system. I would like one of the flagships to start cutting these laughable programs and start figuring out if they can get accredited 3-year B.S. programs. (All that would mean is shifting resources to programs that matter and cutting crap like Indian Studies, etc that survive because freshmen need to fill their schedules with BS survey courses. I hope we get a politician in this state who can stir the pot on some of these issues. But alas, we will just accept the status quo and give our money to the people who ruin our tradition. Go Sun Dogs and hope that the prestige of UND blows away all those losers from Harvard and Cornell on your application to be president of the NCAA Center of Transgendered Ballboys. P.S. I just graduated from college. I'm not sure when you went to college, but I doubt you would really want to give money to these schools unless you could funnel it exactly where you wanted. Not sure if you experienced the new-fangled fascist money-grubbing administration or not. I wouldn't and I definitely won't after this decision. Sure, I would love for UND and NDSU to look like Harvard on an app, but they never will. Besides, I would rather know that I have a backbone and stand up for what I believe when I'm right. Eff my resume, there are no jobs and I won't need it for the oil field. Quote

Eff my resume, there are no jobs and I won't need it for the oil field. First off UND did give me an opportunity by offering me a scholarship to come to school here and study, otherwise I would not have been able to afford to go back to school. Second, my values do not revolve around a moniker. I hate that history and tradition are being lost but I accept the things I cannot change and try to change the things I can. UND is a tier 1 school and is ranked fairly high academically, it's feasible to believe that we could break into the top 100 schools within the next 5 years. I hate that we lost the logo and that we have faculty at our school that did so much harm to their institution, I also think that the administration did a terrible job at reaching out Standing Rock to gain their approval. Where did you graduate from? 1 Quote

Sundog Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 On the Herald site one poster recommended the new name be "Sundogs" which is a cold weather phenomenon and would be a completely unique name with an interesting opportunity to create a cool logo. FYI, the Arizona Sundogs are proudly sponsored this year by the Yavapai-Apache Cliff Castle Casino. The Sundogs will be skating over, slamming into, wearing and who knows what else to the sponsor's logo--all to the delight of the Yavapai-Apache casino. Quote

The Sicatoka Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Would this name be offensive to our italian-American/Sicilian brothers? John Gotti says there is no Mafia: No Mafia, no one to offend, no protesters. And you may have just pissed off Yakuza and some Russians assuming a southern European context. See --> the name is "diverse"! Quote

Seriously, I think Northern Kentucky is the only university with the name, "Norsemen". I've never heard of them before today. So, I think it would be fairly unique. http://www.mascotdb.com/displaymatches.php?mascot=Norsemen I'm sure I'll change my mind next week... Quote

I seriously doubt this administration is going to pick an nationality/ethnicity as a logo and nickname. Plus, for those of us who are not of nordic decent will not cling to it. More than likely they pick a lame animal that a bunch of other institutions use and everybody hates it. Quote

At the one time I wrote this blog post at the suggestion of my old boss about this very subject. What about Norse. Quote
