I think athletic programs can be rebuilt, conferences can be joined later. We have a hockey conference. Also, settlement screwed this issue for us. We should have never had to get the support of both tribes. We are using the name with the blessing of the Spirit Lake Sioux. Maybe we should just cut ties with the other tribe. I also wouldn't mind using this opportunity to get rid of the Self-Esteem Studies majors at the college. That money and faculty space could be used much more effectively in aviation, medicine, engineering, etc. Last time I checked, the 3 million jobs Americans don't have the qualifications to fill weren't in the Whining-about-genocide-that-didn't occur industry. However, I did find BRIDGES' removal of Ward Churchill's letter very interesting.

It gave you opportunity? No, you paid for it and earned it. Yes, its important as an institution to me, but I do not think that I'm willing to give more money to a system that would treat its students, alumni, and fans so poorly. You want to give money to an AD and president that don't fight for your values? I don't want to pay the salaries for the Bridges profressors. I'm sure UND will still raise plenty of money, but I do not think people who disagree with this decision should in any way donate. I think that is the problem with this damn state; no one stands up for anything. We're those heavily subsidized, heavily Medicared Red-Staters. We got those assholes who put up the signs that say "Ethanol makes you an American." They need to feel the anger where it counts. Ideally, I would like a debate to start in this state over the entire University system. I would like one of the flagships to start cutting these laughable programs and start figuring out if they can get accredited 3-year B.S. programs. (All that would mean is shifting resources to programs that matter and cutting crap like Indian Studies, etc that survive because freshmen need to fill their schedules with BS survey courses. I hope we get a politician in this state who can stir the pot on some of these issues. But alas, we will just accept the status quo and give our money to the people who ruin our tradition. Go Sun Dogs and hope that the prestige of UND blows away all those losers from Harvard and Cornell on your application to be president of the NCAA Center of Transgendered Ballboys. P.S. I just graduated from college. I'm not sure when you went to college, but I doubt you would really want to give money to these schools unless you could funnel it exactly where you wanted. Not sure if you experienced the new-fangled fascist money-grubbing administration or not. I wouldn't and I definitely won't after this decision. Sure, I would love for UND and NDSU to look like Harvard on an app, but they never will. Besides, I would rather know that I have a backbone and stand up for what I believe when I'm right. Eff my resume, there are no jobs and I won't need it for the oil field.

To Sioux fans: We're not powerless here. All these names are inadequtae. I have no Norwegian blood, but really, does a Fighting Norseman strike anyone born after 1100 AD as especially fierce or brave? Hitler conquered Norway in weeks. I will hate every one of these names. We don't have to bend over and take it. We'll suck it up now, but everyone here can see the dishonesty and hyprocrisy of this decision. So, what can we do? Well, for one, everyone on this board must vow that they will never give one dime to UND. Don't buy the new name merchandise. Wear your Sioux jersey every day. Keep it alive. Convince your friends, families, and acquaitances to do the same. Tell them that money goes to a campus that has an organization called BRIDGES, which had a letter explaining the systematic Holocaust committed against the Natives penned by none other than Ward Churchill. (Ward Churchill's claims to fame: He is a white hippie college profressor who claimed he was indian. Then he summarily lost his honorary title in the tribe to which he belonged. He called 9/11 victims "Little Eichmann's." He was recently under review to be fired from Colorado University for plagarism and academic dishonesty.) The BRIDGES website also offered a teary-eyed testimonial by a UND Indian Studies profressor describing the horrible racism at UND hockey games. (Google UND BRIDGES and you can look at the whole thing. Last time I checked it, Ward Churchill had just gotten on the news for getting fired and that letter was conspiciously absent.) The testimonial made me wonder; had she ever been to a UND hockey game? I've been to many and I have yet to see any over-the-top stereotypical portrayals of Indians. Last time I checked, we don't even have an Indian on horseback like the Florida State Seminoles. I'm an NDSU graduate ( I know, but believe me, I will only ever be a Fighting Sioux fan and nothing else). I will never give one nickel to NDSU, because a lot of the that money goes to the same pot one way or the other. However, our dollars votes are the only power we have. Is it not blatantly obvious by now that when people want something they should be allowed to have a vote? Some of you will say this hurts the university. Yes, I want them to hurt. I want them to cut. I can think of one department they can cut immediately. Really, if UND does not call itself the Fighting Sioux, they aren't the the same UND that I followed religiously. We'll be just another hollowed-out, generic university. So, I say make them hurt. Hurt the school. Some day, when all these relics from the 1960s get old and can no longer fight or get sick of giggling to themselves how they didn't allow their own to vote, ruined all our tradition, and stole our name, we'll be ready. Let them see that the name in large part makes the university. If we just roll over now when all hope is lost, we don't deserve our tradition, or any tradition. Because we're not Fighting.

To say good people are against the nickname. Being good is different than being reasonable. To say your against the nickname might not mean you are a bad person, but it definitely means you are unreasonable. The damage it will do to the university and the Ralph financially would be enough to say it is not worth it. But again, Americans and capitalism are held hostage by the word racism. Since UND can be propped up by taxpayers means only that it is one more government entity on the dole. People of all political leanings might be for the nickname, but a truly unreasonable and small minority of one political ilk are dismantling the nickname, and those good people who are opposed to the nickname would not care if this minority wasn't making so much noise and lying in the media.

In Dickinson, the school board had plans to paint everything gray and black (they were going to change the name to the Thunder) and bought a lot of gray and black equipment. We always played basketball with gray and black jerseys up through high school because they bought a bunch thinking our name would be the Thunder. Needless to say, they got a recalled and blown out in the election. Not the same as public schools in North Dakota have no choice but to play the Midgets. All the fascists on campuses and fear of victimization at their hands at other schools will be the Fighting Sioux's downfall.

As far as if we actually had to put up with a new mascot. All animal names are completely bogus and would probably make me vomit. I think something very colloquial kind of like the Sooners or Hoosiers. I was thinking the Sodbusters.
