2012 Recruiting

At the present time we do have a tough time recruiting locally against NDSU. They have playoffs going on and big crowds at games. UND is playoff elgible now and we need to build up our cred. Hopefully that is beginning to happen and will continue into the Big Sky. But you never know what is going to happen on the recruiting trails. We did get Mollberg away from NDSU. The one thing we do have over NDSU is the conference. Big Sky locations for games has got to be a lot more appealing to a recruit over MVFC locations. I would think that playing games in California, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado every year would seem pretty exciting. The most important objective of this years class for UND is the quarterback position. We do seem to be addressing that though.

And this is a debate I'm sure each coaching staff harps on. There are advantages and disadvantages to each conference. It will be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few years.

The Mountain West region has a lot of UND alumns and fits better for UND, I am not sure where NDSU's alumns are located but I am sure the MVFC is a perfect fit for their recruiting class. Each conference has pros and cons that recruits sees it depends on what the coach can sell to the kid that will make the difference.

My thoughts exactly. As a UND alumnus living in Colorado I couldn't be more happy about our Big Sky affiliation. I was at the Northern Colorado game and I met quite a few UND fans who drove up from Denver. I have yet to meet a NDSU alum out here and I have been here for over 2 years; I have even randomly met UND alumni out here skiing. There is even a bar in Denver that plays all available Sioux hockey games.

At this point the main thing missing is the local support. The kicker is that there is really not that much to do in GF like there is here so that cannot be used as an excuse and the tickets are dirt cheep. I grew up in Devils Lake and trust me in that you can hunt or fish and go to a football game all in the same day!

I also think winning will solve a lot of problems but the lack of impact from the SD game makes me wonder...

Its something to see UND recruiting players that FBS schools want...plus there are 4 on this list both UND and NDSU want. Should be a good recruiting battle.

For those who are relatively new to this board, you can go to Wiki (on this site - see menu at top on home page) and click on 2012 FB Recruiting. You will see the list of kids that we have offered (and who else has offered), those who have committed to us, committed elsewhere and others we are looking at. I certainly am not going to tell you the list is perfect but it is updated whenever we learn anything new.

Does anyone know anything about QB Sean Rubalcaba from Grand Junction, CO? UND has an offer. 6'2" 175.

http://espn.go.com/c.../sean-rubalcaba

Looks like UND is loading up on QB's for the future. Now lets load up on that OL to block for these QB's.

I am sure that we have withdrawn this offer. There is no way we would expend three scholarships on QBs.

To clarify: Woods has been considering Moorhead for basketball. Walthall has been in contact with him for a long time. I've seen/heard nothing to conclude he's interested in playing football at less than FCS level. That's not to say that the dragon FB coach is ignoring him though or that he hasn't/won't receive d2 FB offers.

My completely uneducated guess is that to the extent Moorhead is truly even in the picture, it's only because it could legitimately offer the ability to play both football and basketball. It rarely actually works out long-term, see Jim Kleinsasser as a good example, but a lot of kids think they'll be the exception and successfully do both at the college level.
You may on to something there. Plays the sport he likes better on scholarship, and plays FB with a fraction of the commitment required of FCS.

I've made this point before about the difficulty of punching through local media messaging of ndsu and the mvfc. UND will have to work that much harder with local kids to push UND/BSC. The first time a kid hears of it can't be when the coach is finally in the living room. The coaches can't do it all themselves.

I say we are the media. Let's make a thread showing how awesome Sioux football is. UND: A Tradition of Winning. Showing our recent and historical success of whopping the Bison in head to head. All those banners and how awesome the Alerus is.

Ok stupid question. I know.

My dream. UND has its own luxury jet. Hey recruit check these pics out. We will be flying you around in this!

Would it pay for itself?

Just recently sat next to the Delta Airlines manager for VIP / NBA / NFL charters on a flight to MSP. Interesting conversation.

Delta charters most of the NBA on smaller customized jets (three NBA teams have their own jets), most NFL teams, many ML, some NHL, and many BCS/higher budget college teams in football and basketball. Delta arranges the buses and sometimes even security checks at the stadiums with TSA employees escorting the bus to airports once the security checks are done. UND uses charters for football, when they have to fly, but not sure if it is always Delta. All other Sioux teams fly commercial.

The manager used to be the Delta representative on every Minnesota Vikings charter. Had a lot of nice things to say about Kleinsasser.

Oregon wide receiver Taylor Walcott to play for the Griz. UND had offered. (Source: The Register-Guard.com in Eugene, Ore.)

Walcott commits to play at Montana

Marist senior wide receiver Taylor Walcott has made a verbal commitment to play football next season at Montana.

Walcott could be catching passes from former Sheldon quarterback Jordan Johnson, who is a sophomore for the Grizzlies. Montana, coached by North Eugene graduate and former Oregon receivers coach Robin Pflugrad, plays Central Arkansas in the first round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday.

“Montana is the place he thinks is best for him,” said George Walcott, Taylor’s father. “They have a great plan in place for him. He went for a recruiting trip a few weeks back and liked the place and liked the business school. He said it felt like the right place for him, he felt comfortable.”

Walcott also had offers from Idaho, Eastern Washington, Portland State, and North Dakota.

Walcott had 60 catches for 1,193 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior for the Spartans, who lost to Mountain View in the Class 5A semifinals last week. The 6-foot, 175-pounder had a touchdown catch in 11 of 12 games.

Walcott played four years on the Spartans varsity and had 153 catches for 3,057 yards and 51 touchdowns in his career.

Walcott is also a track star who has swept the 100- and 200-meters in each of his past two district meets. He is the defending Class 5A champion in the 100 at 10.84 seconds and was second in the 200 at 22.36.

Pretty sure UND uses Sun Country when they charter.

IIRC, last year Idalski, at a Sioux Boosters lunch, thanking everyone and Faison specifically, for allowing team to Charter for a road trip. I believe it was the sweep at Ohio State.

Woods is to have commented on his offers immediately following the team's loss to Rocori on 11/25. Supposedly at least two people heard him say that he had full ride offers from Bemidji and Moorhead for BB along with a full from UND and a partial from SU for FB. Obviously, SU has offerred him a full ride as of a few days ago.

I don't know if that is fact but I would highly doubt that yesterday was the first communication that UND has had with Woods. If this kid is as good as advertised, that would be very poor recruiting on our part!

He has said that he is probably going to NDSU or at least leaning that way. Just because NDSU offered a full ride doesn't mean we need to. Scholarships should be based on what a schools needs are. Don't offer a full ride because your next door neighbor did.

Not really news per se, but rivals is finally showing Taj Rich as a UND commit.

Obviously you can taking rankings with a grain of salt, but it's encouraging that ESPNU has both Mollberg and Rich ranked among the top 20 prospects in Minnesota: http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/playerrankings/_/state/minnesota/class/2012/view/state

I sent a note to Rivals a couple of hours ago about Rich and Bartels. It didn't take them long to make the update.
