Search for a New Head Coach

UND has won ONE national championship with Dane Jackson on the staff.  In 19 years.  They fire the head guy to hire him?

I will say this though, no matter what happens, I do feel that Karl's time here at UND should be done also. I'm not sure why he has gotten a pass as long as he has (lets be real, it's because he is family) as he was brought here with the hopes of developing goalies and various of other reasons.

This made me wonder if an outside hire is made, and he brings in an all new staff......is UND on the hook for any buyout $$S  on current assistants or do they simply lose their jobs without compensation?

Dave wanted to wait until after the NHL regular season to see if he'll land an NHL job, but the University didn't think that was an option. Dave has fully endorsed Dane. He's currently the frontrunner, but there is mutual interest from Blashill and another external candidate (hoping Raboin). Yeah, that's why they should wipe the slate clean and start fresh.

The ties to the program or community are important for one primary reason- the new guy and his family.  Somebody who spent their life in Boston might love the opportunity to run UND hockey, but convincing wife and kids might not be the easiest thing.  Not ripping GF, just saying its a rural community at the northwestern edge (other than AK) of D1 hockey with really rough winters.  Can't have a guy take this job and have his family unhappy.

Why would the assistants have multi year contracts? I know some of the bigger time football schools doe

I think Assistants have contracts too, so whatever it says in there.

If you put it this way, I'm fairly optimistic. You get rid of Berry + the all-time worst Senior class. Bright days ahead for the program!

Might have a guaranteed severence package in the event of a change in leadership...like a change of control provision

I've seen those labeled as volunteer assistant coach as opposed to assistant coach on staff listings

Gosh I hope I am wrong but I now feel Chaves is going to make the safe bet and totally crap the bed on this one.

My frustrations if Dane is the pick (regardless if he and Berry disagree):

1) He's in that room, too. Off-ice and locker room fall on all involved. 2) His main duties on the team were recruitment, forwards, penalty kill. All 3 areas that have struggled as of late. The forwards outside of a few - and definitely not in the higher skill players - showed little compete. The penalty kill was ranked 50-something in the country.

There's also no guarantee players stay. There are a couple that will absolutely jump in the portal because Dane is the guy.  He's not universally loved in the locker room.

Although I know more about football and a bigger fan there, I have enjoyed reading this thread. Some good laughs.
 

I think UND nailed the football hire but time will tell. An athletic department with football and hockey both doing well will be a great thing for this university and all us die hard fans.

At 3:30pm on Tuesday, March 25, I do absolutely believe what @RhettRingers and that Jackson is the frontrunner. Let's see in 24 hours. Although I'm mentally preparing for it, there's also not one logical reason why it would end up being Jackson. Not saying he'll do a bad job, but that would be an all-time failure from the AD. He would have always been a finalist, based on open records, but I would never have thought he would have been on paper a top 5 candidate. What a sad candidate pool that must have been.

If Dane is hired, how is that crapping the bed? Look, we all want what's best for UND but none of us are truly "in the know" of what goes on and how to lead a program. Could the longtime assistant finally get his chance to show the world what he can do as a head coach or does an outside coach come in and totally fumble the ball and drags the program down?

Maybe working for Berry the assistants didn’t have much of a say in style of play, lineups or PK or PP style, none of us know. If Jackson thought things were bad he had lots of chances to move on and coach else where but chose to stay with Berry. I hope they go in a different direction. But willing to give him a chance.

Those are our only two options?  How about the new guy comes in and pumps some life into the program?
