Gavin McKenna is the other.

It is extremely difficult to enter the NHL as an 18 year old and have success.  Many, many, many players including first round NHL picks in the CHL like the idea of being on a college campus for one year, maybe two, then turning pro in order to be impactful as rookies.

Regarding the money, the only "real" money that is guaranteed is your signing bonus of ~$300k (which will still be there if you play a year of NCAA hockey) so the compensation you are needing to match is $80k in the AHL roughly?  But you then also have to pay for an apartment and incidentals and be a full on adult if you are in the AHL.  CHL money (non-endorsement) is beer and gas money.  It isn't anything to compete with.

I agree with the fact that hockey is not football or basketball, but the NIL is starting to enter.  The hottest blue chip players are weighing the big 4 of:

1. Will they develop me for the NHL

2.  How much is my total package (scholarship plus NIL)

3.  Is this a place I want to spend time walking around and be a part of the campus community

4. Do I like the boys/coach/program/facilities and can we win a chip

Based on those 4 things, I believe that coaching and recruiting is changing.  One might say we don't want pima donna recruits that think like that, but Gen Z is coming whether we like it or not.  It used to be #4 drove the bus...

Seems like Berry has this team playing disciplined hockey, they dealt  with #27 bad penality during the week and the team knows the repercussions of taking bad penalties. Dog gone it fellas don’t do that. It’s his MO throughout his head coaching. This team can’t kill penalties well so keep taking bad ones and costing the team.

@yzerman19 is right on. Collegiate athletics are completely different in 2025 than they were even 5 years ago. Coaching & recruiting included. Adapt or die. I asked, already knowing the answer about NIL and if the hockey coaching staff is actively campaigning like the new football staff if. They aren’t.

This will hurt some feelings, but UND is not a current tier 1 / elite program. They just aren’t. Until they get a new staff, they won’t have a chance to get back either.

But aren’t we complacent

Perhaps the hockey team could benefit from a gm to help the program get a better handle on recruiting and nil.  Huge player pool now with the CHL players becoming eligible.

No hurt feelings here. Just frustration.

We cannot afford to become a mid-major. It simply must not be allowed to happen. And if a coaching change is necessary to prevent that from happening, then that is what must happen.

I recall a few years back,  that it was clarified.  Bubba is the football coach,  Bubs is the hockey coach.

Extremely important clarification, thanks

What happened last March still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah, last years team was really fun to watch, especially in the first half of the season.  It just looked like they were really enjoying the games.  Losing to those a-holes from Ann Arbor...not so much.

Call it recency bias, but I’m putting a lot of stock in what happened with Bubba and the similarities between the two programs.

IMO Berry’s seat is hot. My prediction is this teams makes the NCAA tournament, he gets an extension. They miss the NCAA tournament, he’s out. I know what scenario is best for the program.

Team got dominated the first five minutes in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Kinda like Michigan did to us in the regional last year.

To me this points out one of my great frustrations about Berry teams - It's been discussed that we need to play a full 60 and some have pointed out that all teams have ebbs and flows to their game.  But to come out of the locker room between periods in big games and look lost for 5 minutes is inexcusable - this should be directly on the coaches and their ability to get the best efforts and focus when it matters.  Good programs do this - we don't.

I don't think this year's team will make the national tournament.

As the weeks pass by it’s becoming more clear that this team is not going to make it to the playoffs. Our only way in would be to win the conference tournament and we all know how that goes. Time may very well have passed Berry by, but does Chaves think that and will he decide enough is enough. I would say no, but what happened to the Football Bubba gives me a glimmer of hope. I think we all agree Berry is a nice guy, but it is becoming painfully obvious we need someone new. I just don’t think he is getting the best out of his players and that’s a big problem.
