Answer there is quite obvious, especially when it comes to defensive coaches. And it’s not purely about X’s and O’s, it’s about relatability and forming camaraderie with the student-athletes; the current coaching staff, starting with the head man, appear to be significantly deficient in these important qualities. But, when you’re up there in years relative to the student-athletes and sleeping all day, then that will happen. And this isn’t a me versus them comparison, this is a them versus the field (other top FCS coaching staffs) comparison.

UND needs to be better.

It seems live everyone in the known universe knows this except Bubba.  I can't imagine what goes on in his stubborn head.

Thoughts that continue to hold back the potential of UND football …

It ain’t just the old one that’s not up to snuff though. We do have some good ones too, don’t get me wrong, but some just ain’t it.

And when it comes to developing talent, when the Minnesota player of the year and the Wisconsin player of the year are sitting behind Romfo, what does that say about the ability of the QB coach to develop the position? Wasn’t Freund the QB coach as well?
Does it say that the QB coach can develop an ND 9-man QB, or does it say that the QB coach cannot further develop a player with great high school career?

Q, Feeney, and Jerry were all big time recruits….

Went and looked on 247 and according to them Feeney had no offers from the other Dakota schools, or any other FCS school.  Q's only other offer was Old Dominion.  I wouldn't call them big time recruits.  Couldn't find anything on Jerry.

Point is that I don't think they're recruiting the right guys.  Hard to develop if you don't have the right tools to start with.  I guess time will tell.

Edit...Kaminsky had other offers from St Thomas, Eastern Illinois and Augustana.  Point still stands.

Not mutually exclusive - they aren’t recruiting very talented players and they aren’t developing them also. Net result is what we’re seeing on an annual basis. Horrid coaching staff for UND football … but complacency, unwarranted contract extensions, and a country club attitude will do that. You know what they say about pressure … it makes diamonds. No pressure within UND athletics right now or of late …  and it shows.

NDSU told Feeney to look elsewhere.

The only big time qb recruit we’ve had in D1 was Mollberg. Let that sink in. Bubba and staff literally tried the Rugby Rifle for multiple years. They have no idea what they’re doing.

Today I give thanks that the recruiting pipeline thru Cavin ND remains open...

At least ND one produces, thankfully.

Is that what I witnessed for 12 games? You're better than that.

So a 3 star FBS commit is not a big time recruit? On paper seems about as good as you can do at UND. Maybe I’m looking at it wrong

Yes, in a way.  Could ODU beat the SUs on a consistent basis?  Doubt it, FBS in name only.  How come no other offers for a 3 star?  Probably cause the only reason he was a 3 star is because he did have an FBS offer.

What about Feeney or Kaminski offers?

I agree with Geaux on the Mollberg point.  He was really the only higher rated QB recruit.

I heard less than flattering things about Danny's ability to coach/develop qb when Mollberg was here.

Too bad Hedberg couldn't have been lured back when he left Southern Illinois as he's been killing it down south.

Looked at old fb web page.  Danny is listed as wr coach but nobody assigned as qb coach. Maybe he helped out there.  I was just told he wasn’t very good at devl the QBs back then.  Maybe they were confused or I misunderstood.

Recruiting even high regarded recruits are still crap shoot unless your big time FBS schools even then many fail to make grade. We from outside don’t Know how these quarterbacks are performing and time effort they are putting in and they have tremendous amount athletic ability but now requires mental ability to understand offenses and defense do it on quick basis. This requires time varies from player to player.Romfo has had to show this because being walk on from small school behind  of number of highly recruited players still to be considered shows he has ability to play the position. Second he has had to do this with two different offensive coordinators. Finally Jerry may eventually win this position but many of you forget here is Jerry is still only freshman I don’t see to many freshman playing significant minutes playing time for young quarterbacks is starting when they are sophomores. Trey should have been one getting playing time this year but he chose to leave and find position he would get more playing time this told me he probably going down division to get this and he didn’t think he could be starting quarterback.  NDSU quarterback Cam Miller has been exception to this but look he is being considered For NFL again in there recent condition.  I would like for us recruit NFL caliber quarterback but we need to reach next level where players of that level would consider coming here. I even think that NDSU may not be able to recruit that level talent now because FCS and FBS have separated because of money flowing to FBS. Even if FCS team does recruit player of that level he will be scooped up by FBS with money they can offer players today.
The problem with this team wasn’t on the offense this year but the defense side we had at beginning of year when everyone was healthy at best average defense. There are number of good defense players but just not enough of them. We need to recruit bigger up front people like we have the offensive side. Second we also need faster and quicker people on backside and outside plus having more depth. The offense needs to improve also with faster and quicker people on receiving end 75% of receiving was dependent on Boe. We also need to have tight ends that can be offensive threat. The change in FBS roster sizes I believe is going to be opportunity for UND to build program through transfers this coming year. Second FCS is basically coming down to Valley and Big Sky conferences. The majority of FCS teams are not going to fund support football to level of these two conferences especially top of both these conferences. The next several years are going to be interesting where all this shakes out.

Having heard the hierarchy of UND football talk about making the playoffs as the program goal, one needs to ask:

What kind of player wants to come to a place where making the playoffs is the highest goal?
