Oxbox, based on your experience, what is the approximate number of beds that are used by elective procedures at any given time? The total number of staffed beds in ND is 1931......Covid hospitalization rates seem to fluctuate in the 170-180 range. Are there 1500 beds a day occupied by unplanned visitors like heart attack victims or are there alot of back surgeries clogging up the system?

Is the ability there for the health system to flex more beds if Covid hospitalizations ever jumped significantly from let's say 170 to 300? I.e. could people get a couple days notice that their elective was cancelled.... instantly freeing up a significant number of beds? Generally speaking of course.
The Sicatoka Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Is there data from prior years showing hospital occupancy during October or February? How do we compare to a "normal" year.

It doesn't fit the narrative and it would make people panic less if they realized hospitals routinely operate just fine with minimal excess capacity. 2

Don't you build hospitals like you build churches? You don't build a church for Christmas or Easter. You build so it's affordable through the year, and full at peak times. 1
The Sicatoka Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Where is "George" campaigning today? What I noticed is what the Brits dared say in the link: Jill whispered something to him. Based on that clip from yesterday Trump should start calling Jill Biden ... "Jeff Dunham". 1

Oxbow6 Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 So Dr. Birx was in Bismarck visiting with Burgum today. Birx feels wearing masks mitigates the spread. Doug does not. So instead they both seemed to agree a crucial step will be more testing and isolating/quarantining more asymptomatic "silence spreaders" targeting the 20-40 year old age group.

Who enforces quarantine? I'd say the pubs I drove past Saturday night were "quarantine centers" for the 20-40 crowd. 1

Does one honestly think most 20-40 somethings in ND are voluntarily going to get tested when they are aren't sick/asymptomatic???

Another ramification of previously shutting stuff down. In addition to the dramatic drop in cancer diagnosis, there is a pent up demand for other medical services which were needlessly put off while the hospitals/clinics sat empty. Now the "crush the curve" strategy is actually going to lead to a shortage of space. Chalk it up to "unintended consequences" which were completely obvious to anyone with a hint of common sense. 1

College kids sign up for 30 + credit cards in the union lobby with with 47% APRs..... all for a !@#!$ tshirt. Free food for a little qtip swap.... yeah thats why testing and cases are through the roof.

Based on your logic, positivity rate should be pretty low with all these people just getting tested to get free stuff. Yet here we are with a 10.6% 14-day rolling average positivity test rate that continues to trend upward. And that number is the better on of the two, the positivity rate for those testing for the first time is near double that. We'll find out if today's numbers were just the standard Monday downtrend or things are finally heading the other direction.
The Sicatoka Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 ND DOH stats: Statewide total staffed beds: 1851 Percent staffed beds available: 13.94% (258) <-- that means 1593 (86.06%) are occupied. Hospitalized with Covid*: 256 Again, how does 86.06% occupied beds in ND in the fourth week of October compare to prior years. (And we have to do percentages because of the new ten-story monument to Denny in southwest Fargo coming online in 2019.) *meaning as primary reason or in for other reason but have virus
