I’ve been on record here and officially via communication with “leaders”  for years stating Bubba can’t get it done if we want UND to eventually be a champ like NDSU and SDSU.

I think Danny Freund would be a last resort. The options come down to what we pay and who is interested. The new facilities are getting done upon perfect timing to recruit a new staff.

Early list:

Jake Landry NDSU OC
Danny Freund SDSU OC
Grant Olson NDSU DC

Isaac Fruechte UND OC

Beau Baldwin (QB coach Calgary Stampeders; former EWU head coach under Chaves)

Tony Annese (HC at D2 Power Ferris State in Michigan)

Todd Hoffner (HC Minnesota-Mankato)

Jerry Olszewski (HC Augustana)

We riot if it’s Jake.

@Longtime fan @UND-FB-FAN what direction do you want them to go? National search? Danny? Freuchte? I’m being hopeful and let’s say it happens after this year, if that makes a difference.

I want und to move on from the und connection.  It has done absolutely nothing in the D1 era.

I know you are advocating for Freund but I’m skeptical.  My only positive with him is that he now has a year under his belt with a winning culture in sdsu….could that propel him in a positive direction ??  Possibly.  The thing with is that he’s  never experienced competency in a head coach or staff until this year. Too many years of “good enough” attitude. I just believe that his brain is wired with bad bubba influence for horrible in game decision making. I think he is an upgrade from bubba just unsure of how much ? Think he needs a good 5-10 year re-set from bubba ball  to move up any higher than where he’s at now.

I would like a national search.  At some point und has to compete with the other Dakota schools and top 10 teams.  There has to be a D2 coach that is having great success that is looking to climb the ladder.  Perfectly fine with a proven d2 or NAIA coach that has a proven track record.  Aka DeBoer .  Nothing like what bubba had in D2 but an actual winner.  Haven’t done any research so I couldn’t give a name

If firing bubba tonight was a possibility I would take Freuchte.  He isn’t a und connection.  Yes he is the current und oc but with less than a year of the bubba influence ….my hope is that his mind hasn’t been altered to und reality.  Think he has the fortitude and drive.  He seems very confident and looks like he can connect with players ? Overall ….it looks like he “gets it”. Would he be the answer???

All of my opinions of course

IMO Jake Landry is no different than Freund. Both former UND QBs who snubbed Bubba for a conference rival. Honestly, with how horrible Bubba is at coaching right now, I can’t blame either one of them.

I’m okay with Fruechte if he cleans out the entire defensive staff. With that said, preference would be a D2 proven winner (Annese, Hoffner, Olszewski) or former FCS national champion head coach (Baldwin), and I’m not holding my breath with the precedent set by Chaves and Armacost and Bubba’s recently extended contract.

South Dakota has had a good defense for a while now. You could argue their DC has done more with less than the other Dakota schools. Their defense has risen to the needed physicality to beat the other two Dakota schools. Maybe he’d be a good candidate? I haven’t even looked up who it is so I could be way off.

I’m one of the bigger Danny proponents but I get the skepticism. My one thing that I will say is that I just think he could create his own culture. During the time he was here, it was still Bubba’s culture ultimately. Danny could try to make his own a bit but it still relies on the head coach.

Having said that, I’m open to a national search. I’m also of the opinion that I’m okay with UND being a bit of a stepping stone. If, whoever UND hires is good enough to get poached up a level, things must have been going well. Can lead to a good trickle down effect too.

Here are a few names I would explore, with no knowledge of their desire to come:

Chris Winter, Wartburg

Jeff Thorne, former North Central HC

Vince Kehres, Toledo DC

Spence Nowinsky, Memphis DC

I would guess that Nowinsky is out of reach unless he wants to come back to the Midwest. He is from Minnesota. Jeff Thorne has been out of football the last couple years, but may want to come back once his son Payton is done playing at Auburn (senior this year). Kehres was a successful coach at Mount Union, taking over that spot from his father. Now has been successful at Toledo as their DC. Winter has turned Wartburg into a national championship contender at the D3 level and is very young.

Just wanted to throw out a few names with no UND connections.

Glenn Caruso from St Thomas was fashionable pick a number of years ago. Don’t hear his name mentioned much anymore. They haven’t set the world on fire since moving up.

Sometimes opportunities fall in your lap if you are in position to take advantage.

Kennesaw State fired Brain Bohannon today.

He is 53.

He started the Kennesaw State Football Program from scratch in 2013, started playing in 2015. Went 71-30 in FCS, National Coach of the Year in 2017. Went 5-4 in the playoffs, twice advancing to the quarterfinals. Is 1-8 this season as they are transitioning to FBS.
