No doubt Bolte is a great coach, and I agree that winning at Bemidji is probably very hard, but his experience out of the NSIC is next to none. That's my gripe. We've had quite a few NSIC coaches come through UND... and I'd prefer someone with at least some D1 experience.

Not who do you want it to be, but who do you think it will be?

My Prediction would be Glenn Caruso.  Fruechte is staying on as OC and the QB that decommitted from St Thomas will sign with UND.  IMO too much coincidence the Fruechte was chosen at Interim HC and the QB all of a sudden decommitted.

I could definitely seeing it go this way.  This is a direction I am ok with.  With both of them being from the offensive side of the ball, I wonder who they would tap for defensive, which is the most crucial pick of the new HC, IMO.

Maybe Bolte as UND DC is a step up from BSU HC??  Don't think you'd get a current FCS coordinator to make a lateral move, though that very thing just happened to us (TWICE in a week!!)

That would be a good choice

Scheme don’t matter if the scheme don’t work. Schmidt’s defense in 2024 at San Diego State and at UND from 2014-2019 were below average.

Initially Schmidt's defenses were good, and actually bailed out lackluster Rudy offenses.  I remember going to those games hoping our D would score because wasn't sure our O would.

So once Mussman’s guys were all gone and it was all new recruits we regressed?

Cuz teams wouldn’t run on us when they passed all over us

The stats are hard to find but one is total yards per game, #1 in 2014.  And the other is based on points given up, #1, in 2016.

Sure Schmidt's defenses weren't perfect but to say below average appears misleading.

I only found through 2016 so far.  The other years should be there, too, in the media guides.

Anyone have any idea what $ Caruso currently makes? St Thomas may have deeper pockets for their coaching staff than some people think.

Stepsis leaving Drake for UNI gives me hope on the financial side of this.

I agree Eric was not below average for sure.  I remember the year defense was injury depleted.  Some in fall camp and more as the year progressed.  Bobcats came to GF and expected to roll us because we had no DL except freshman or little playing time.  Eric cobbled together a great plan and we beat the Bobcats.  They where ranked pretty high and Anderson was their QB.  Later NFL as LB.  I was impressed how Eric put that together.

If Knuth is signing at UND that’s an important piece of news.  Lots of things lining up here including yesterday’s tail number.

Let's remember that NDSU made a similar move to what is being discussed on here when they hired Polasek. Not the greatest resume ever

Think anyone on SS.com could coach the Ag School and win a title

Didn't Schmidt bring in Tillman, from Houston, who was one of the best players on D in 2014?
