Yes, and can we really afford to hire a G5 coordinator as HC? we should be looking for an up and coming FCS head coach with a solid defensive scheme and coaching that we can pay more for and provide better facilities. Also wouldn’t mind bringing along some of their top guys. Someone like a Trey Lamb type of coach, not necessarily him but a guy in his situation Quote

A coach should leave with the program in a better position then when they came. If he would have stayed, that may not be true. Bubba didn’t have the balls to fire any of his defensive staff that HE picked. This is an easy way out for him to not have to do the dirty work while getting to stay onboard without getting fired himself Quote

Dont buy it but that’s just my opinion. I don't think he said in his press conference that anything was status quo. He just did a recap of the year and said he was going to evaluate everything including himself. He said what anybody would say if there was no decision made yet at that point.....regarding his status or the assistants. Quote
Siouxperman8 Posted November 30 Posted November 30 My belief - if we got the 3 yards on the 2 point conversion at Youngstown, Bubba is still coaching. They win and go into the next week with momentum and beat ISU blue. That alone would have gotten us to 7-5. Then it comes down to beating either USD or Illinois St for a very successful season. It is amazing what a difference one play can make. 2 Quote
forksandspoons Posted November 30 Posted November 30 A salary in Grand Forks goes quite a bit further than in San Diego. However, I want this job opened up to as many people as possible Quote
sioux24/7 Posted November 30 Posted November 30 Looked like Schmidt may have been running the 4-2-5 at San Diego State? That’s encouraging that he may not shove the 3-4 down our throat, if hired. I do believe he would think hard about it, if offered. Quote

Schmidt could be looking at 1) Next HC at UND or 2) next year as DC and potentially fired if that program doesn't turn it around. Never hurts to look more than your current pay check down the road. If SDSU had a winning record and top or improving D Schmidt probably not interested in UND at all. 5 hours ago, F'n Hawks said: You think Schmidt got the offer to go to Bama? Eric Schmidt will apply. It’s guaranteed based the on opportunity to be a head coach (which Schmidt has never been within the collegiate ranks) and the excellent opportunities ahead for UND with the new facilities. Also, there is no guaranteed job security at San Diego State (and income taxes in California vs North Dakota are major components ). With all that said, I honestly think UND should strongly look elsewhere first for the same reasons why Schmidt will apply: Schmidt has never been head coach within the collegiate ranks. Plus his defenses didn’t elevate UND football to anything special when he was DC with Bubba. I’d love new blood, with minimal to no UND ties, with prior excellence as a head coach (lower level okay), and most importantly, the energy and foresight to excel at UND so he can move on to the FBS. As has previously been said on here, anyone thinking of UND as their dream job (like Bubba and also possibly Schmidt or Freund) and not a stepping stone should not be strongly considered. 7 Quote

He’s got to make way over $500k California income taxes and lack of job security, plus the ND/MN home area factors, all make Schmidt a guaranteed applicant. With all that said, we need to learn from 2013, albeit many will think of that hire as successful even though UND missed on the current Alabama head coach…. I really think UND needs to look past Eric Schmidt, Freund, Fruechte, and even Luke Schleusner. Get someone who has been successful as head coach previously, or knows championship culture currently within the FCS. I like the idea of a very good D2 head coach or a coordinator from a perennially top 10 FCS program (Luke S. and maybe Freund are actually the closest to this …) Quote
siouxweet Posted November 30 Posted November 30 Sounds like Bubba is moving into a made up position Quote
