zonadub Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 This says we're now the 56th school to use a form of Hawks.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_college_sports_team_nicknamesand not even the first in North Dakota. oh F'Hawk Quote
JohnboyND7 Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 The logo should be a bird with a tear going down his cheek... Yet another school has marginalized our avian friends. 1 Quote
Let'sGoHawks! Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Seriously though, you guys going to riot today. At least one couch has to burn in the streets of Grand Forks over this. Or have you all just given up?This is an example of what opposing fans will try to do. FU, GO UND HAWKS! Quote
Yote 53 Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Coming from a Coyote who attended UND Hockey School back in the days of the Old Ralph and who still has some Fighting SIoux swag that is almost 30 years old from that camp, I actually am sorry for you guys. I would be completely pissed off right now if it was USD who pulled this crap. Fighting Hawks is so freaking lame, it really is undescribable how pathetic it is. I would be flooding some email boxes, hanging some banners, marching, and some good old civil unrest over this. 4 Quote
Teeder11 Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 This site has been very pro RR so the venting is understandable IMHO! As long as that's all it is, I am quite cool with it. Go, Hawks! 1 1 Quote
xI Hammer Ix Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I'm excited! While the nickname is not my first or second choice, it is infinity better than Roughriders. I get it's not unique, but who cares? All the cool unique names are taken anyway. Keeping "fighting" in it obviously is an homage to Fighting Sioux. It will be interesting to see what they come up with for a logo. Now we can look forward to the future, instead of dwelling on the past. Hopefully. I bet the nickname recall petition will start any moment now. 1 8 Quote
ClassB Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 How clutch was it when Kelley said that the logo process would mirror the nickname process though 1 Quote
Yote 53 Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Guess we'll just save our pent up frustration until next fall on Sept. 17 and take it out on someone at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. Good luck with that. Alot has changed in the last few years. You won't be tangling with some pushover USD squad. Quote
willistonalum Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Sad, sad day in so many different areas of the nickname topic. Never to be the same, will never be better. The press conference and video was also sad. Do not see nickname as a good choice amoung many other issues associated the selection IMO. Guess the students got their choice. Good luck younger generations and others who voted for the new name on trying to promote a bird as your symbol of greatness and pride for a great University. Quote
Hambone Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Hammer brings up a point about petitions and what not - I really hope that people just accept this and give up the hopes that we will be anything else. This is many years overdue. 5 2 Quote

Cratter Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 UND just stood in front of the yogurt display for half an hour trying to pick a flavor, then walked away with plain. Embarrassed. 1 Quote
mksioux Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Yea, like an Eagle for the USA! What are they thinking?I've heard variations of this argument a lot. I think Mafia made a similar argument with regard to Kansas University Jayhawks. Or with the Tigers in the SEC. But the comparison doesn't stick. If UND was the first university, or even among the first, to adopt the Hawks nickname, I think it would be a much better choice. It's the fact that we're adopting it after dozens have already done it is what makes it such a particularly bad nickname. 2 Quote
xI Hammer Ix Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 LOL.You can pay tribute to Fighting Sioux without dwelling on it. 1 1 Quote

747Guy Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 (edited) Save the money on a new logo....Fighting Sioux jerseys and other SIOUX apparel with still fill every sporting event...this new name is a waste of time Edited November 18, 2015 by 747Guy 1 Quote

darell1976 Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I wish. We still have to get through the next news cycle of being a national laughingstock again. So that will be fun.You talking about our men's basketball program? 2 Quote
SWSiouxMN Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Blah... but whatever. Better than SundogsLogo better be awesome Quote
HopHead Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I see the overwhelming criticism is that the name isn't original enough. I can understand that to some degree. But the reality is that not only is UND the only "Fighting Hawks" out there, the other schools with "Hawks" as their name aren't exactly a who's who of college athletics. Just looking at D1 football and basketball programs, only Monmouth goes by "Hawks" in football (out of 253 FBS and FCS teams) and only Monmouth, University of Hartford, St. Josephs University and Maryland Eastern Shore go by "Hawks" in basketball (out of 351 D1 teams). In hockey there is the University of Miami Redhawks and the UMass Lowell River Hawks. There's definitely an opportunity to make this name our own. It's much more unique than Wildcats, Eagles, Tigers, etc.For the record, I never voted for Fighting Hawks as my choice. But it's done and it's time to move forward. 1 Quote
sioux34 Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 HopHead, although the #5 Iowa Football team is officially the Hawkeyes, here in Iowa they are universally referred to as the Hawks. Quote
