BigGame
Why are they so bad about showing replays at the game? Every turnover, penalty, or big play didn't get a replay in the stadium yesterday, but a lot of the ordinary plays did. Why? It was frustrating because what is the point of the big screens if they can't or won't use them in the correct situations?
ChesterFritz90
One of my friends who works for their in-house crew said their normal replay system was broken yesterday and had to do them using their back-up system that is kind of old and outdated that takes nearly 3-4 times longer to use. dmksioux
http://www.grandforksherald.com/event/article/id/282166/group/homepage/ Looks like the Alerus Center is upgrading its score boards and message boards in time for next football season. Not sure if that means new video boards also? "The center also plans on getting new arena scoreboards and message boards in time for the next UND football season, she said." ericpnelson
What exactly is a message board in an arena? Forgive me for not being familiar with the term.
Popular Post ibleedgreen
Hopefully the new scoreboards will have room for 3 digits for the home team and only 1 digit for the visitor...#chuckthepigskin!!!!
Risky
Are these boards different than the video boards we have now? Do we still use the present video boards and these are in addition?
southpaw
What exactly is a message board in an arena? Forgive me for not being familiar with the term. Generally, the scoreboard is the actual Daktronics board that shows the score, time, etc. The message board is often less noticeable but is usually just above or below the scoreboard and essentially runs a marquee of welcome, thank you and other short messages. Daktronics will often do a full replacement of both systems and the video board however they're usually mentioned specifically. So if it's not then I wouldn't assume the video board is among the upgrades.
geaux_sioux
I don't feel like the Alerus will be replacing the video boards based on their past history. Hopefully new speakers will be in the near future

geaux_sioux
And sound dampeners for the ceiling to reduce the echo. The echo is what makes it so loud with the crowd noise.
UNDBIZ
The echo is what makes it so loud with the crowd noise. True, but it also makes the speakers sound worse than they are.
PrideOfTheNorth
True, but it also makes the speakers sound worse than they are. I would rather win games because of the home field advantage noise than have the little added benefit of good sounding speakers. I don't think the speakers are that bad anyway... IMO. PrideOfTheNorth
You can't have both a winning atmosphere and good speakers? I should have clarified more. The talk was about getting better speakers, a point was made that part of the reason the speakers are bad is not the actual speaker but the fact that noise echoes. Then someone said we should put noise dampeners on the ceiling to make the PA sound better. Well as a result, as geaux_sioux said, noise dampeners doesn't only take out the speaker echoes but also crowd noise. Crowd noise is what makes a great home field advantage which leads to a better winning percentage. Call it a design flaw in the Alerus, I don't know, that was my reasoning though. I think it should be determined the speakers are actually the problem before there is a push to have them replaced.
RollTribe
I really hope the upgrades happen. I go to nearly every football game and still have a hard time with the scoreboard. It just seems so awkward and hard to read, maybe it's just me, but it just seems messy, and primitive by today's standards. In the grand scheme of things, I would love to see message boards (like the one that goes around the inside of the REA) where the scoreboards currently are, scoreboards where the replay screens currently are, and 4 new replay screens in the corner posts (like the dome down south). Yes, this would be expensive, but it certainly wouldn't be crazy compared to what other schools have installed lately, and I also think it would really help with the student attendance at games. In my opinion, one of the main reasons students attend hockey so well is because of the atmosphere and in-game experience the Ralph offers. sioux24/7
We need new video boards at the Alerus and we need video boards at the Betty.
southpaw
FYI a new one-sided wall-mounted Daktronics scoreboard system runs about 1.2 million these days for a football stadium. One (or two) smaller boards at the Betty would be about 750k each.
gfNDfan
We need new video boards at the Alerus and we need video boards at the Betty. At the Al, I hear not totally new boards but bigger and better resolution that with other video expansion options will bring it up to date. It's time for an update since the Al is 13 years old now but remember it was WAY ahead of it's time video-boardwise when it opened. The problem was the Ralph opened the same year with state of the art boards so of course the Al looked weak but remember - It took the fargobarn a couple years to upgrade to even the Alerus level in 2001 and they'd been around for a lot longer...PLUS their in-house show was VERY amateur many years AFTER they got videoboards but that's another story. Video boards at the Betty are due but who's going to pay? Small venue - have to hire a regular crew and buy equipment - spendy but something would be nice. The Sicatoka
The video boards at The Al are surrounded by fixed advertising. If all that space could be video board ... Expensive? Yes, ... but if the existing boards could be sold to The Betty ...

BMOC
I don't think that is too big of a dream. In my opinion they should turn that whole space into video boards as well as the football scoreboard with video capable fascia displays. According to the bid spec it looks like the Alerus/EAPC is at least interested in seeing what that costs as well. You can see what they are asking for at the EAPC Bidding Site. I would love for them to go for the majority of the alternate bids, but I'm guessing that will come down to a budget decision. The Broncos got new video boards before the start of this season and technically UND got new video boards before the 2001 season. Coincidence or guaranteed record booster?
