Native American group vows Supreme Court fight over woke New York mascot ban

The Native American Guardian’s Association (NAGA) argued that the New YorkBoard of Regents’ 2023 rule banning the use of Native names or imagery by public schools is discriminatory and violates the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal treatment under the law. 

"Today, we take the next step in our journey to the United States Supreme Court, which is the only logical finish line," NAGA counsel Chap Petersen said in a statement. "The ‘Native Name Ban’ laws are both offensive and plainly unconstitutional. Their very existence is an embarrassment to all Americans, as well as the Native community."

NAGA has stated that its broader goal is to eliminate such bans nationwide, including restoring names like the "Fighting Sioux" in North Dakota.

Winning this case should lead to the wholesale voiding of ‘Name Ban’ laws, including the cancellation of the ‘Fighting Sioux’ name and symbol in North Dakota," NAGA President Clayton Anderson, who is enrolled in the Hidatsa Tribe, said in a statement.  

They’re only targeting one group, one ethnicity, to say you can’t be recognized, you can't be celebrated by the teams," Peterson added. "That’s a violation of the 14th amendment, which prohibits racial discrimination and gives all people equal protection under the law regardless of race or ethnicity."

I got a call from the Alumni Association I believe in 2011, during the heat of the battle, asking why I hadn't provided my usual donation. I told them I will return to giving when they get the Sioux name back or fight the NCAA hard and honorably. Neither occurred and I kept my word. A majority of Standing Rock triable members live in South Dakota. They had/have much bigger issues than voting about a logo for a school hundreds of miles away they have no connection with. The mistake was when our AG agreed to UND having to get approval from two tribes - no other school had to do that. Really doubtful it would have passed on Standing Rock.

UND set record in 2025 with $119.5 million in gifts to UND.   Previous record for 12 months was was $100.5 million announced in August 2024.  A little strange in that they changed from FY to CY recently but both are for 12 month periods.

Record endowment now at $510.7 million. 

Forever UND campaign upped goal of $500 million to $625 million after met the $500 million goal 20 months early. 

I wish we had been able to keep the Sioux nickname but it doesn't look like the change has exactly crippled fundraising.

Heck, UND should just sue the NCAA now to get the nickname back; they can't win a court case to save their lives.

You would still have holier than thou programs like Minnesota and Wisconsin refuse to play them though.

I'm sure if the NCAA "approved" the Sioux name, Minny and Bucky would gladly add a non-conference weekend where they could charge a premium on their tickets.
