Tennis is moving from the spring to the fall and a lot of schools are dropping it because they don’t have the resources to facilitate that sort of move.

Also let's be real here, it's not like Tennis has been at UND for the past 50 years. Back in 1990 UND had cut Men's Tennis. They only brought it back in 2012 with the move to Big Sky Conference as it was a core sport for the conference. And now let's ask, why would we join a conference with a core sport that we don't have or could support? 

Let's be real here, we can blame Chavez all we want about how he has managed Athletics at UND both good and bad, but when you're basically given a mess on a platter because previous leaders and administrations basically decided to spend money likely crazy and not plan all that well for future. Go back to when the REA was being built, if we had administration back then that had a vision and plan, we could have made the entire area the athletics hub for UND with Tennis Courts, Softball/Baseball diamonds, etc. Instead, we have an area that is only used during the fall/winter seasons. Nothing is really going on around the REA during the spring or summer as those sports were off campus at the time. And it's only been part of the overall campus plan since 2016 to try and bring athletics back on campus. 

Again, not defending Chavez one bit here, but you can't blame him when he's basically having to clean up 20+ years of mismanagement and missed opportunities for athletics at UND.

Chavez didn't make this decision in a vacuum.  I am sure that the folks at Twamley were very involved, not just because they are dropping two programs, but they are dropping below 16 total.

I feel very sorry for all the athletes that trusted UND and now they are led to the curb.  Maybe it is really time to look at the AD and make a change.

I think 5 years ago I would have felt the same way.  Now, with NIL and the portal, we have a different game being played.  The athletes come and go as they wish.

There is a lot of money being demanded by the athletes and with only so much money in the budget, you have to make tough choices.

Cutting two sports is bad optics (even more-so when you're the only Dakota school that ever does it), but the "bad press" will pass. I think Chavez might have this one mapped out! I'm as surprised as anyone. 

There's one more move that should be done if we're looking at a complete restructuring. Goal. Cut through some of the BS, it's how do we fund Hockey and Football at the highest possible level, while being Title IX compliant. What needs to happen? 

• Hockey. You need to be fully funded for scholarships (26), plus Alston, plus FCOA. You cannot go into a recruiting battle with anything less than a full scholarship (even if it's 0.90), when your competition will full scholarships.
• Football. Set yourself up for a potential FBS move down the line. Need to add 22, plus all the other expenses that come along with it. With the House Settlement and being able to go above 63, lead, start chipping away now. Be the first FCS school to go above 63. 

Next move? Cut M-Golf. Drop you to 14 sports (FCS minimum). You absorb those scholarships / $ into Hockey / Football. As you are also doing with M-Tennis. 

IF an FBS move becomes available down the line, you are in a much better position. Add two Women's sports at that time. 

 

Edit: Possibly substitute Men's Cross Country instead of Men's Golf. Whichever currently has more scholarships / costs more. Name of the game being how do you absorb as many scholarships as possible into Hockey / FB without moving the Title IX needle.

That's impressive. I just remember going to the hyslop for women's basketball, the first part of men's basketball then taking the tunnel over to the old ralph.  Great memories

I just looked at tennis rosters. 8M/8W; 1 ND, 1 MN, 14 international. It read like a roll call at the UN.

All those international tuition scholarships couldn't have been cheap.
