Another fond memory of mine from back in the day was watching the 1997 UND/CC Frozen Four semifinal game at the CC student union with my girlfriend and a bunch of her friends and a huge room full of CC students. I think we beat them handily like, 6-2 or something. I was the only UND fan there (obviously) but everyone was cool about it as I tried not to be “that” guy. Still, it was fun watching UND and CC square off in the FF.

Here you go…they even have a little segment on Brian Swanson at the 1:30 mark.

You all remember the Darcy Zajac overtime winner at the Ralph over CC? I feel like that was a matinee game on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon? Maybe someone can confirm that. Brad Malone with a low shot on thr CC goalie and Zajac with the rebound.

Good memory!
It was indeed on a Sunday too.  :)

Quote

Darcy Zajac doesn't score goals often for the University of North Dakota men's hockey team with just four this season and 15 in his career for the junior center from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

He might have collected the biggest goal of his career this afternoon when his rebound off a Brad Malone (So., Miramichi, New Brunswick) shot at 3:25 of overtime delivered a 4-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory for the Fighting Sioux over Colorado College.

It was far more than the game-winning goal, however. The win put the Sioux (16-6-4) atop the WCHA standings for the first time this season, one point of Denver University (16-8-3).

Any combination of one Sioux win at Wisconsin next weekend or a Denver loss in a solo game against Colorado College next Saturday would bring the MacNaughton Cup as WCHA champion to UND for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

First one to 3 each night wins?

Quote

It has been nine games since the Fighting Hawks have hit the three-goal mark on Colorado College.
In the last eight games, UND has scored 2, 1, 2, 2, 0, 2, 2 and 2.

Three has been the key number for the Tigers, too.
When allowing two or fewer goals this season, Colorado College is 9-1-1. When allowing three or more, the Tigers are 4-11.

Question for the experts out there...Cam Berg with this quote in the Heraldo:

"We just can't get frustrated," Berg said. "Playing CC the past couple years, we know their game. It's not always going to be a run-and-gun type of game. You have to take advantage of your opportunities. You can't get frustrated and start forcing things. We have to play within our identity."

So what exactly is our identity?  Serous question.

I remember watching Mac’s dad back in the day. CC had some great teams starting in the mid-90’s. Unfortunately for them, they ran into a loaded Michigan squad in 96 and a UND team that could not be denied in 97. I remember the hype one year in a series between UND and CC at the Cadet Ice Arena where the Jason Blake/Brian Swanson rivalry was the headline. Fun memories going to those old CC games at the old Broadmoor World Arena, then for a few years at Air Force Academy, and then finally at the then new World Arena.

I wish the best for CC (Except of course playing UND).  Having them successful is a good thing in the college hockey world.  Puts pressure on Denver U when there's a second relevant program in Colorado.  Colorado Springs is a sort of Mecca of college hockey (Spencer Penrose, the Broadmoor, Olympic facilities, etc.).  The college hockey world does not exist in its present form without Colorado Springs.

And yet another trip down memory lane, circa 2010 or so. A delayed penalty was being called on CC. So UND pulled the goalie for an extra attacker. Both UND defensemen skated off on a line change as Jason Gregoire if memory serves, made a no look pass backwards from center ice to what he thought was one of his D men. Unfortunately, there was nobody home and the puck drifted casually down the ice and into our own wide open net. I think CC whipped us pretty good that evening like, 7-3 or something. Scott Owens was quoted as saying in all his years playing and coaching, he’d never seen a goal scored liked that.

Ah yes, I was going to school in Colorado Springs for that game. Girlfriend at the time's dad used to be a goalie for CC so the whole family gave me plenty of !@#$ for us scoring on ourselves and getting whooped. I don't think I took it well as I recall having some snipes back at them.  Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I believe that win clinched at least a share of the McNaughton Cup or at least put them in position to win it the following Friday in Madison.

I don't think they have one.  I remember when Hak was coaching at this time of year if we played our game we had a good chance of winning.   That was solid D and forecheck the hell out of teams.

Correct. Denver had lost the night before and that’s who we were chasing. So the win I think put us 1 point up. Denver only had one game the following weekend against CC and we had 2 against Wisconsin. So all we had to do was win one game.

I've got a weird feeling that TJ is in the net this evening.  He was okay on Friday at SCSU, but not great by any means, and Bubbs made the "he played really well" comment after the game.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

I think it will be Hobie.  I hope I am right.

At what point does the goalie dilemma get ugly and the students start to boo TJ?

If TJ starts tonight....as soon as UND goes down 0-1 "We want Hobie"

Book it

It doesn't count if you personally start the cheer.
