Would solidify the UND offensive line amongst all five starting spots and offensive line is the most important position group in all of football. Would be a major step towards giving UND a consistent offensive effort that raises the floor of the 2025 season and helps out Schmidty’s defense in year one of the 4-2-5 transition. I also excuse the guys who left following 2023 as the program was headed in a horrible direction (and hence a 5-game losing streak and a losing season in 2024). You don’t extend a lame duck coach, lose the current offensive coordinator of Washington State and head coach heir apparent to a rival in a lateral move, and lose your newly hired replacement offensive coordinator alum to your rival within one week without some guys rightfully saying what the f*ck? Anything else? Maybe I should be thanking him as he (and Danny) likely aided in moving the program to a fresh start. The tough part of saying this is on the personal side I like, admire, respect Bubba. I have known both Bubba and Schmidty for a long time, it's been an interesting dynamic. But pro-Schmidty 100%, we needed new perspective and leadership. 7 Quote

Bubba is a good guy, it’s just that [apparently] being a good guy doesn’t entitle you to being a good to great head football coach in 2024/25. Sometimes you have to make your own luck which involves hard decisions. The best way ain’t the easiest way. Onward. Schmidty is a guy to admire and respect in his own right, which everyone knows, and here’s to hoping his way is the right way for UND. 1 Quote

But there’s no doubt this helps you get the right guys in the building (recruiting). Win-Win 1 Quote

I guess pulling a starter away from the Jacks would be a decent reason. The #1 priority for Schmidt now is making this team better. Grudges will have to be set aside. 4 Quote

As for Sam Hagen’s final year of eligibility, he’s staying with South Dakota St. in 2025 it seems. Oh well, UND has 4 returning starters on the offensive line, continuity at O coordinator and offensive line coach, and some decent depth. Quote

I agree, but do wonder how the other players coming back feel about it. Would hate to see any friction within the team. I think Schmidt seems to have the guys buying in, so hopefully it’s a fresh start for everyone. Quote

That means upgrading the talent level as quickly as possible. I think Schmidt has sold his vision for the program to the players he wants to retain. The others will inevitably move on to more suitable homes. 2 Quote

It’s the framing of that as a positive thing that makes the difference. 4 Quote

Siouxperman8 Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Heard (2nd or 3rd hand) that the NIL money for our new QB was $50k. It's impressive that we have kind of NIL money to offer if true. 4 Quote

If that were true, how did Romfo bypass Feeney or for that matter, Feeney and Kaminski? How did we have 2 guys competing for the starting center position? How many tight ends were in the mix this year? How did a true freshman move up to a backup on the oline? I don’t believe guys were guaranteed their positions. Coaches want to win and play the players they think will give them the best chance of winning. UND’s struggles were more related to talent level and possibly schemes etc. than inability of players to progress up the depth chart. 8 1 Quote

Every off season, every spring ball and every fall pre-season is the time, to move up the depth chart and no one’s job is every guaranteed. However, players can’t play being afraid a mistake on one play will cost them their job. All players make mistakes and those who are afraid to make a mistake are not going to be as effective. If they making mistakes and can’t learn, then “next guy up”. Quote

It’s a crucible that will push guys who can’t handle it away and allow those who love it to thrive. 1 Quote
