A real leader doesn't wait for applicants to role in, he goes out and gets his guy.

Agree.  AD should always have a list of potential replacements for all of his head coaches.

I think somebody else mentioned him in this thread several pages ago, but in terms of successful dII coaches from the region who have had done "more with less" than most of the other NSIC powers, Brent Bolte from Bemidji St. might be somebody to at least reach out to.

I’m guessing there were a handful of contacts or conversations made before this was announced.

Beau Baldwin

He hasn’t done anything good since 2016. Wasn’t a very good OC at Cal or ASU. Struggled as a HC at Cal Poly. No thanks.

Tim Tibesar is same as Eric Schmidt. Various roles, some FBS, but minimal to no success in those roles.

Schmidt has had success as an assistant with Fresno and Washington. Let’s see how SDSU goes over next couple years as DC.
Tibesar has extensive experience at D1 FBS DC  and as NFL position coach. He is a very smart guy, very well spoken. No HC experience.

Both viable candidates worth considering. Let’s see if they apply and if either does who else applies.

It would be a mistake not to consider either of them if they apply.  You interview best candidates whoever they are and hire best candidate to move the program to top of FCS football.

We don’t even know who will apply yet.

He has back to back road playoff wins this year.  Don’t know much about him, but a guy that can win on the road and in the playoffs sound like a step in the right direction.

Never said it was going to get him to the pinnacle. What I said was it’s the current HC 2nd and Schmidt’s 1st year and they need time to get their players. I don’t care if you’re Nick Saban, you ain’t turning that program around that quickly. Also, UND still couldn’t afford him UNLESS they take this move seriously. If they want to be a contender, they need to properly fund the program.

No question UND needs to properly fund the program, but the way all things sit right now, UND head coaching job is actually comparable to San Diego State defensive coordinator job.

Both (Schmidt and Tibesar) are well spoken with extensive experience but both without particular success as head coach or coordinator. I would be hesitant to strongly consider either …

The point I made earlier is Schmidt didn’t have profound success here (UND) as defensive coordinator, and his success at Fresno State and Washington was on the coattails of DeBoer.

I would strongly caution against a similar situation as when UND hired Bubba in 2013. Should be a successful coordinator in FCS, or successful head coach at D2. Alternative could be a guy like Beau Baldwin, who knows Bill Chaves from their time at an Eastern Washington, and Baldwin won a national championship at this level (FCS).

I mentioned him earlier on. He’s a position coach in the CFL (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beau_Baldwin). Have to imagine he’s at least contacted and wouldn’t be surprised if he applies. I’d be seriously intrigued, as he is a former FCS national champion coach.

He better have a darn good reason for his Cal Poly tenure being terrible. And only lasting one year at ASU. Seems like he’s been trending in the wrong direction the last few years.

Idk his last head coach position, Cal Poly, thought they were getting a good head coach too:

Quote

On December 10, 2019, Baldwin was hired by Cal Poly as their new head coach, replacing the retired Tim Walsh.[1] Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong introduced Baldwin as head coach and stated on December 11, 2019, "We need football to rise to the level of academics". During the remainder of his tenure with the Mustangs, Baldwin coached his teams to only 4 wins, held a lead in only 9 games, and was outscored by halftime of those games by 429 points.[10] Baldwin finished his time in San Luis Obispo with the fewest number of wins by any Cal Poly head coach through their first 25 games in school history.[11] Baldwin had an 0–5 record versus in-state rivals UC Davis and Sacramento State as Cal Poly's head coach.[12]

No question that’s a concern, albeit Cal Poly is a tough place to win at. I think it’s fair to state that there should be a better candidate with more recent success.

I have little to no faith in Chaves making a good choice. His judgement is lacking just based on giving Bubba an extension last year. I hope he makes a great choice but I’m not too confident.

Amen to that. I’d hire him just on those credentials.

Not sure what that means, but in doesn’t  diminish his contributions to DeBoer’s successes.
There is a reason DeBoer brought him along to Washington. He obviously valued his contributions.
I believe he wanted to accelerate his career opportunities so took the DC opportunity at SDSU. I’m not sure he will take an FCS HC rebuilding opportunity for less money.  He might. Others here that know him better think he might.

I’d suggest looking up what he did at each stop and rethink your comment about his success being on the coattails of Deboer because it wasn’t. However, if you’re going to stand by that comment then you are basically implying that all of Deboer’s assistants success was due to Deboer only.
I also don’t agree that the HC job at UND is on the same level as a DC at SDSU.

In these situations, does a new HC keep someone (perhaps multiple someones) from a current staff to maintain some continuity with the team and committed recruits?

When he was here, the D sucked as much as it did this year.
