You're assuming that Hakstol/Berry would have achieved the same results if half of their career was spent recruiting into a lesser building than the old Ralph (the old Decc). Try again. And missed the tournament twice.

I think they are both good coaches but I'm not going to ignore the weaknesses in Sandy's resume they would have had people caging for his head if he did the same thing at UND, just pointing out the hypocrisy in it. BarnWinterSportsEngelstad
If I was the AD @ UND and I had to make the choice: I would take either Hakstol, Berry, or Sandelin over Lucia or Motzko. And if it was a few years ago, I would add Blais to the first group.
The Sicatoka
Berry is going nowhere for at least two more years, and it would take two years missing the NCAAs and with declining attendance at that. But, say, the unspeakable (namely that) were to happen, who's on the short list circa 2020. I'm going to say right now it's not Sandy, or Eades, or Herter, or even Steve Johnson. They'll all be knocking on 55 or better. Who is the up and coming coach in the family?

Sandy won a title the first year the Amsoil opened. Then he lost in the second round of the tournament and followed that up by missing the tournament years in a row. That was preceded by making the tournament two years out of ten. Yes, missing the tournament is a weakness. However they finished 14th in the pairwise which gets them in every year since 2008. Losing multiple players earlier than expected, leaving unexpected holes or accelerating players also caused issues. Look at the number of players that have left UND early compared to UMD and then couple that with those that left a year or two before they anyone thought they would.
BarnWinterSportsEngelstad
Berry is here and a keeper. Lots of variables to a future decision. Many assets in this hockey program to slip too far. This next team could surprise many.
The Sicatoka
Ponder this: Eight guys from the win over QU are in the NHL right now. Schmaltz, Boeser, Caggiula, Gersich Stetcher, Poolman, LaDue, Wolanin Imagine this year's team with Schmaltz and Boeser still playing ... with Jost, and Poolman. All that said, you have to keep bringing in talent to replace what goes.

Not saying he's division 1 coaching material, but possibly someone to watch. I know I've heard about a former player, that hasn't been gone long, being a great potential future coach, but I can't exactly remember who it is. NCAA hockey is basically one and done like basketball so in this business you can’t afford an off-year in recruiting. 17 year olds have a short memory reference. Two bad years of results and in their minds you are average. The top of the heap college coaches literally hire their assistants based on: 1. Can they recruit? 2. Can they coach? ”Recruiting is like shaving, if you miss a day you look like a bum”—Jim Tressel

By our standards attendance was light this year and we still outpaced the rest of the country. We can be plenty cocky if we continue to be the best attended games home or away. But seriously, rip the band aid off and jump on the Bulldog bandwagon. You clearly want to. 1

Point is don't get cocky and assume it won't drop further if the same product is put on the ice again. People don't pay $50+ a ticket and buy a bunch of $8 beers to watch a slightly above .500 team play a bunch of low scoring games and miss the playoffs. One good recruiting class can change everything but UND has been getting spanked by UMD and Denver lately in that department.

Or are they just great fans who watch on TV and listen to the radio as @BarnWinterSportsEngelstadstated earlier?
John W.
A blend of 'studs' and 'grinders'.....Hockey recruiting has evolved into those categories....and Sandelin has seemingly perfected the blend....'Studs' in both college hockey and BB...come in for 1 or 2 years...don't care about any tradition...but just development and exposure for themselves...and move on to the next level.......it's the merging of these guys with 'grinders' like the kid from Minto and from Warroad, (both @ UMD) who are just happy for the opportunity to play and will put out effort every shift.... The successful coach/staff has got to reach that 'blend' in recruiting....

We were just told UND is getting spanked by UMD and Denver in the attendance department. I guess if you combine their attendance then they outpace UND 11,475 to 11,408, maybe that's what we're missing.
