When you look at statistics, UND doesn't seem like an exceptional team.  Maybe we're not.

Gotta remember a lot of schools feasted on D2s and non-scholarship schools for their non-conference games. Helps with the numbers. Also, specifically for offensive stats, a lot of college teams run gimmicky offenses where they rack up huge numbers in either rushing OR passing. With that said, our slow start to the year didn't do us any favors.

Areas for improvement:

1- hold onto the ball- fumbles have been hurting

2- punt return team -bad

3- the last two games have been better but offensively but the 3rd down efficiency is incredibly inefficient.

4- limit the big play.

Look at the stats from this week compared to last year (my first post) we are scoring more points than last year, and our defense has taken the ball away as many times (16) as all of last year with 5 games still to be played. This team is improving in most areas compared to last years 7-4 team.

Stats are always fun to look at . . . and they are pretty telling of what a team can do.

But the win / loss stat, in the end, is the only one that really counts!

Assuming those losses are quality of course...

Because 7-4 with an FBS win and a win over a seeded team on the road would seem better than 6-5, but I guess that's just one person's opinion. And that's not even getting into other 7-4 teams resume...

Hope the team wins out and is not a concern. The narrative about UND's schedule is already being thrown around.

If we have 180 yards of offense (or whatever the number was) before we even have a third down again like last week, I'll probably take it. ;)

The UND rushing offense is better than the UND rushing defense. Maybe the O line should start getting some credit. There were plenty of people putting them down earlier this year but I'm not seeing the praise I think they deserve.

You don't want to lead the nation in any one thing - except maybe W's, 'most playoff games played' perhaps. Do you see NDSU at the top of any category?

no.

Balance - that and defense and ball control and time of possession. ;)

We've already passed for more yards than last year. Also the running and passing yards are damn near 50/50. It's a beautiful thing.

Plus our defense with 19 turnovers compared to just 16 last year is a great sign of aggressiveness towards the ball carriers/receivers.

I wasn't impressed with Rudolph early on, I though it was way to predictable, and he under utilized some talent.

However, it is apparent, how much better the coordinating looks, when the players are executing what is called. Rudolph still needs to should some of the blame for what was going on at the beginning of the season, but it definitely looks like there was enough blame to go around. O Line, QB play, Play calling .... doesn't matter now, as they appear to be clicking on all cylinders.

Execution was off early but I am convinced he held some of the playbook back until conference play. Gusty and smart in my opinion.

For what it's worth...and this is all secondhand, but I live in Minot and followed MSU during a good chunk of his tenure (i.e. before their D2 move killed my interest).  From what I heard, some of MSU's struggles during his time here were due to players (especially but not limited to quarterbacks) not being able to fully grasp playbook terminology and get into a rhythm.  His offense is significantly more complex than the zone read schemes a lot of teams are going to nowadays, so new players can't just step in and light it up from the get go.  With new and inexperienced players at receiver and on the line I think some of the timing was off at the beginning of the season, but I expect those issues to continue to minimize going forward this year and in future years as we build up a more experienced and balanced roster.  I think the training wheels were on the playbook even through last year, but going forward we are going to be more and more balanced...and I'm excited for that.

I remember his offenses at St. Cloud with Keith Heckendorf under center...it was a thing of beauty for a football purist to watch!  It kind of reminds me of some of our performances the last couple weeks.  Paul is definitely not a "nobody" in Midwestern coaching circles.  He's been a collegiate head coach for 15 years (albeit at lower levels)...but he's not some kid that calls games like it's Madden (see Bisonville's "critiques" of Polacek).  When he has the depth and roster continuity to work with that we are building towards...well I'm thinking efforts like last week will be the norm.
