Add in the fact that springfest is not a UND sanctioned event. Those pesky facts. That's what I was pointing out. Ask Joe Citizen about what happened and he'll likely tell you it was when some UND students got into trouble over some shirts. Hell, google that story and you'll find out that rarely does one say that they were NOT in fact UND students. Mission accomplished. 1 Quote

Cratter Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 At least the Star Tribune admits in the article "We don't know if this photo has anything to do with UND." 1 Quote

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised... Quote
Popular Post mksioux Posted September 23, 2016 Popular Post Posted September 23, 2016 Quote “We are moving as fast as we can,” Kennedy wrote. “I understand that we all would like a swift resolution. However, our society, our legal system and campus conduct processes are predicated on due process. We must maintain the integrity of our policies and procedures by following due process.” Speak for yourself Kennedy. I, for one, do not want a "swift resolution." I want any investigative process to be slow, deliberate, and above all, fair with full due process rights. I don't like Kennedy pandering to the pitchfork mob and treating due process as some unfortunate pesky procedural barrier to an immediate tar and feathering. Quote A team will be directed by Kennedy to learn about diversity education practices at other universities that could be implemented at UND. “As I have said before, we value diversity and inclusion and take seriously respect for others as well as the exchange of different thoughts and ideas,” Kennedy said. “To achieve the vision of One UND, we must take steps to demonstrate these values across our university community. I do not defend the action of these girls. Even before social media, a stunt like this would have been stupid. And it's especially dense to do something like this in the age of social media and in this tense racial climate. But the actions of a few teenage girls does not warrant a wholesale onslaught of "diversity re-education" which usually ends up amounting to nothing more than left-wing political, social, and cultural indoctrination. Kennedy used to be a Republican, and so he may be overcompensating here to establish his liberal bona fides to his new peers in academia. But if a few teenage girls acting stupid on a Saturday night ends up being the pretext for the establishment of a re-education indoctrination program at UND, I will have to re-assess my support for this institution. And I would expect legislators would take notice as well. 6 Quote

I thought he was trying to communicate that the best process is the one that follows the correct protocols, and that would be done in this case. Quote
Sioux>Bison Posted September 24, 2016 Posted September 24, 2016 If Kennedy stoops to the level of the whinny liberals then maybe my donations will need to be redirected to a different cause. Students or not colleges should not discipline student for expressing their first amendment rights whether they are in poor taste or not. 1 Quote

He's doing the right thing by getting to the bottom of what's going on. If you want to see a bigger !@#$ storm than what's already played out, just have Kennedy ignore these allegations. FAIR OR NOT, UND already has a national reputation for being tone deaf to racial issues. Ignoring this new episode of allegations would not help our situation. Quote

He will need to dish out some form of punishment or provide a good explanation that is backed by the "locked out" student. If punishment is necessary, it better not be expulsion or donors and the legislature will be angry. Quote
dagies Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 In this day and age these were stupid posts to put on social media. But they weren't particularly threatening either. These are good learning opportunities for kids who may have had little exposure to a diverse environment and the implications of social media. I can remember back to when I was at college and did some pretty stupid stuff. I could have easily done something this thoughtless (and probably did) but because we lacked social media it didn't wrongly implicate a whole institution, and the ramifications to me were not so severe. With maturity and exposure you gain more wisdom about how to interact socially. If the resulting investigation proves some sort of punishment is warranted, fine. But I don't think these situations raise to the level of the worst of racial discrimination or threat. 2 Quote

I like how they tied in the first amendment. Stating the code of student life can't trump the first amendment. Quote
