Oxbow6 Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Well, that explains a lot. If you haven't won a natty, you don't know anything about hockey. Totally agree with you on the Mac call. Why even give the ref the chance to make the call? I swear, some folks here would still be screaming about a second penalty in OT being called even if Mac had taken one of his skates off and smacked Ortega in the helmet with the blade! That would have been a 5 is my guess...... Quote
yzerman19 Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 The refs don't even cross the mind of a player out there. You just play the way you play and are coached- its the manifestation of 22 years of "training" on the ice- Penalty or no penalty never crossed Mac's mind- nor should it. You don't think on the ice, you play. Quote

Oxbow6 Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 This issue w the Mac call is that same play happened at least a dozen times in the first 62+ minutes of play by both teams w/o a call......but yet in OT...already a man down...here comes the whistle? #handup Quote
yzerman19 Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Love the lines. Wish Olson were here. Not sure why you thought 24 played so poorly last night. Also he's been very good over the past 10, why would you think of sitting him? That's borderline crazy. He lost nearly every loose puck battle and was slow. He's supposed to be a PP specialist...well, we sucked it there too Quote
MafiaMan Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 That would have been a 5 is my guess...... And some folks here still would have b*tched about the call... Quote

yzerman19 Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 24 plays with no urgency, and it results in what looks like he's just going through the motions. I don't care if you have all the God given talent in the world and a pedigree- you have to play hard to play on any team... Quote
jk Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 One man's lack of urgency is another's poise. Maybe he just looks like he's going through the motions but he's actually making the plays. Although it's just another routine hockey play, he did get the puck to the net on the 6-on-4, resulting in the tying goal. It seems routine, but those do get blocked from time to time (here having the meaning of "a lot"). Quote
MafiaMan Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Opening face-off, Zombo winds up on the ice and Mac gives him two hard cross-checks to the back as he's laying on the ice...no call. Re-wound the DVR and watched the penalty in OT 25 times...Ortega goes down like he just took a bullet thru his lower back. However, Mac could have easily gone into the corner and quickly sent the puck down the ice and out of harm's way. Quote

He did, Ortega flopped forward to exaggerate the contact, and the ref took the bait. Quote

TBsioux Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 They were the better team in this game as well. Every bounce had to go right for Omaha to win, and Massa had to be damn near perfect. Those that got through him hit posts or trickled wide. Although Sioux need to find a way to finish better, they outplayed Omaha for most of this game. That said, Omaha handled the Gaarder line well, as they did not dominate the puck possession on every shift the way they usually do. Not sure if that was the case that line may have played 5 shifts together in the whole game, because of special teams, not sure if Poganski had a shift in the 3rd. Quote
dagies Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 A penalty is a penalty. Maybe we shouldn't make questionable plays in non-scoring situations??? There you go. I'm not a fan of situation reffing. it's a penalty in the first minutes of the game...it's a penalty in the last 2 minutes of OT. MacMillen should have been called for a cross-check in the first few seconds of the game. I know your opinion on this, but given the two handers Omaha doled out all game long, and Massa's slash to a player standing in the exact spot MacMillan's penalty was called, I can easily see how MacMillan could consider contact in the crease fair game. And that's not even considering the context, already shorthanded in overtime. I've been pretty upset with Mac for that clear cross-check, in that situation. You make a good point that helps explain what he may have been thinking. Long and short of it, though, is you put your fate in the decision of the refs in a critical point in the game. They were the better team in this game as well. Every bounce had to go right for Omaha to win, and Massa had to be damn near perfect. Those that got through him hit posts or trickled wide. That said, Omaha handled the Gaarder line well, as they did not dominate the puck possession on every shift the way they usually do. Completely agree the Sioux were the better team last night. They had many more scoring chances/close calls that hit posts, or just rolled inches from success, or bounced over a stick (Johnson). Omaha was living a charmed life, IMO. You also make a good point about the Gaarder line. One man's lack of urgency is another's poise. Maybe he just looks like he's going through the motions but he's actually making the plays. See Ryan Suter. He's only an all-star. Rarely hits anyone, and never looks like he's in a hurry. Something else we don't know....is JS hurt? He's never been a physical player but maybe there's a reason he's avoiding contact as much as possible. Clearly Omaha had a few dominant minutes in the first period, adn the Sioux managed to live through it. Omaha threatened all game long, because they are a very good team with a fast transition game, and they have talented players. But I thought the Sioux were able to do most everything they needed to do except maintain consistent offensive pressure. They generated plenty of pressure and good chances. They really were not helped by the hockey gods with bounces that just didn't bounce the right way. Anyone else think Massa's glove was weak last night? Seemed to have difficulty catching and controlling pucks with his glove, and I think one of the goals came from a muffed catch. Really like the attitude of the players in Schlossman's game piece in the Herald. Acknowledged that while the end of the game calls went against them they had calls that went their way too. I think that not focusing on the end of the game is a good mental place to go into tonight's game. I like our chances if the hockey gods play fair. Quote
I Ranger Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I sit 24 tonight and send a message- Poolman moves back and takes his spot. Insert Simonson. Scoring: Mac, Parks, N.Schmaltz Scoring: Jewels, LJ, Chyzyk Energy: Pattyn, St Clair, Simonson Energy: Gaarder, OD, Pogo Those were the same forward moves I was thinking. I agree with you that 24 wasn't very good last night but there is no way he sits. He wasn't a healthy scratch once as a freshman when I thought he was a liability on the ice for 3/4 of that season. I am not sure who you sit to insert Poolman but I guarantee it won't be Schmaltz. Quote
MafiaMan Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Mac is playing center on a 5-4 pk situation. His responsibility is the front of the net- if he chases a loose puck into the corner, he takes himself out of position and leaves a goal scorer alone in the low slot. So why does Mac sprint to the corner then after dropping Ortega? Quote
OETKB Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Enjoyed watching that one, despite the outcome. I need to avoid having my friends watch hockey with me - seems like every time I invite someone over, UND loses. Quote

Also he's been very good over the past 10, why would you think of sitting him? That's borderline crazy. I agree with you I don't get the hate for Jordan some people seem to have. He had great jump last night moving the puck very well and it seemed like he really played a lot of minutes. Over the past couple weekends it seems he has been even more aggressive in the offensive zone and has created some chances through jumping into the play and pinching to keep the puck in. He is never gonna be the type of defenseman who is gonna be a physical defenseman who is gonna be in a lot of board battles. He is a highly skilled finesse type player that can provide offense and move the puck well. There is no way they will sit him and there is no reason he should be sitting. Quote
