I know it’s how the state government works, but why would it matter to someone from, say Dickinson or Williston, that a casino is built in Grand Forks? Ridiculous. Go into Montana and you can gamble at every gas station.

Jealousy.  They would want one too. This would have made a nice economic impact on grand forks.  I believe half those no votes are Jealousy

Had absolutely nothing to do with it.  This was not a close call.

Exactly. But it did gave him another chance to say Imperial Cass County.

So it was another east vs. west kerfuffle? That's been going on for years.

That really isn't much of a thing...   But no, there is just a strong dislike of the expansion of legalized gambling.  Couple that with the tribes and charitable gaming (a large and well-funded group) being very against it, this was a huge uphill battle.

Way too many far rightwing phony Christians in ND to ever get gambling expanded.   I'm a devout Christian but have no opposition to controlled gambling.   The only reference to gambling in the Bible is a neutral reference to Roman soldiers casting lots for Christ's clothing after his crucifixion.

Can't have any Chinese company building within a million miles of gf cause....scary!

And natives americans wanna build a casino near gf must be drug dealing gangs..scary!

Might have helped if the tribe was more transparent like where is the money coming from, where are they going to get 800 employees, why GF and not Minot.  Was always going to be a big pull as the rest of the tribes would be against it.

Lol.

Idk logic would definitely tell you the numerous Indian reservation casinos all over the state was built with drug money.

Exactly and that Chinese company went to another state and built.  I guess they weren't scared and got the economic impact we didn't.  The same people complaining about the Chinese company and casino are the same people complaining our mall is empty.   They go hand in hand !  We need employers to bring people to bring more business.  So small minded thinking.  I was proud of our city government to at least test the waters and seen the bigger impact.  To bad the state will never get with the times. Vote them out

They said they were getting some of it from the tribe and the rest in loans. They picked grand forks because they said they had proven ties to the region from their history.  Did you read or listen to anything that was said ?  As for the 800 people they would have had 3 years to figure that out.  We have two major employers coming to town. Potato plant and soybean crushing.  Not everyone can or wants to be a factory worker.  Jobs for spouses. That's why grand forks can't grow like fargo and bismsrck

Senator Luick (Richland Co) stated in the judiciary committee that he doesn't think a casino is the kinda of economic revenue the region needs and that maybe they should build a waterpark.

Is this for real?

I think when alot of people hear casino they have visions of Vegas casinos that are relatively clean....have nice restaurants and spas....and cool concerts/residences by slightly over the hill musicians.  That's not the reality for the vast majority of native casinos in the tri-state area.  Grand Forks does need growth but this wasn't the way to do it.  The community dodged a bullet on this one.  Any doubts go visit one of the area casinos sometime.  They aren't exactly Circus Circus during their prime.

I don't feel bad for the tribe either, I would think Turtle Mountain is doing all right with their on-reservation casino and I believe they also are involved in horse racing up there.

I do feel bad for the Grand Forks area and the the upper Red River Valley as whole, because I really feel this would have had enormous economic impact to the area, and could have really given it a destination venue for adults between the ages of 20-55 or so, something GF is sorely lacking.

Hats off to the GF City Council, the GF area legislators, and the Turtle Mountain Band for be willing to explore this at the very least.  In the long run, all of these potential dollars will likely end up going elsewhere.

What really frustrates me is that it seems it was stamped out by vocal legislators from other parts of the state.

Also, the whole narrative about protecting "charitable gaming" is such a joke.  Seems many legislators don't want grown adults patronizing a gaming establishment that benefits a tribe, but are just fine with "charitable gaming" that funds old-man baseball & hockey leagues, shooting clubs, snowmobile clubs, curling clubs, etc.

Alerus needs to look forward and get things going because when Fargo gets their convention center conventions will be harder to get

some good old boys money would be great to come up with ways to improve GF economy

it can’t always be tax money

fargo will eventually be their own worst enemy.....

do you have your convention in a town where people are randomly stabbed on sidewalks and violent crime is surging or do you use alternate cities that are at least trying to quell the bad stuff that happens with rapid growth and libtard gov leaders like they have in imperial cass county

Such as?

They are doing a renovation of the conference space. They have a great reputation for hosting large events. There's 5+ hotels connected to or within walking distance of the facility.

Just curious what you'd like to see them do?

5+ hotels around it......always wondered if the need is there (which it must be bc they (5+hotels) were built and still open...) why wouldn't / didn't the Canad Inn make their tower 30 stories tall and have all the hotel business bottled up in the area?
