I would imagine the travel costs is what's making them discuss the move.

I know they've been whining about it since year one of the NCHC.

Alex H. is a good, smooth broadcaster, but not a great PxP guy, in any sport, really.  He's probably the best that Midco and CBSSN can get to do the games they are responsible for calling, which is definitely good enough.  I like Alex, but some of his rehashed phrases wear on me ("IN THE BACK OF THE NET!!!!!!")

I wish Dan Hammer was still around so we could celebrate the "Traditional Circle of Sticks" after a sweep!!   He did that ONE TIME when he had a brain fart after calling a game - not easy btw - yet he got crap for that for YEARS and never lived it down in many UND fans minds - now he's selling hot tubs...coincidence?  I think not.  It was that phrase that got him in HOT WATER to start with!  (see what I did there;-)

Every announcer tries to get a catchphrase going or f*cks up something during a live game and often it LIVES FOREVER in fans minds.  Here's a fun game to try if you think a PxP job is easy.   Record a game, mute the sound and call the game yourself.   You don't have to know all the players names...just try to call the action in real time and see if you might make a mistake or two.  Or say something stupid that lives forever because it was live.  Easy to sit in the Lazy Boy and judge!  Alex is a total professional but not perfect - no one is - but I'll take him any day to broadcast our games.  We're lucky to have him.  Not sure bringing back constipated Scanlan did us any favors.

NCHC TV is a subscription service.  X% of the subscription goes to the conference and the rest goes to the schools.  I don't think ESPN+ access pays the schools or conference.

Is the following a true or false statement:

Exposure via a known brand > conference/school $$ from a streaming service only its specific watchers have.

And for the record, my interest in ESPN includes spots on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU, not just ESPN+

This is what I wonder, too ... ?

There's a reason my young kids know Hockey East and ECAC rosters as well as the NCHC.  And it's not because my North Dakota kids have an east coast bias, but every time they turn on the damn ESPN+ app on Friday night or Saturday afternoon/evening, it's plastered with east coast college hockey.  And they watch it ...

Maybe the NCHC would be better served getting some eyeballs on their product instead of having the exclusive, league-only app, even if the latter creates a better profit.  I thought the NCHA was running a hockey league after all, not a streaming service.

curious why that is the case.

ESPN lowballs every small conference, they try to restrict local tv rights even if they aren't televising their games, and they usually make the schools produce the games themselves.  The last company I want UND to work with is ESPN.  I'd be suprised if ESPN was willing to pay the NCHC what UND, alone, is getting from the current NCHC.TV revenue cut.

Exposure can't be translated into specific dollar amounts to set budgets and pay bills.

No argument that it makes the product more available and puts more eyes on it but I believe the NCHC.tv contract was fairly good for UND.

"exposure"

How much?  ESPN doesn't release viewership data for ESPN+

The NCHC would be lucky to get a couple games on ESPNU.  Pretty sure ESPN U is now in less homes than CBSSN anyway.

If it was profitable, ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU would be all over it.  ESPN+ streaming is maybe the best NCHC can hope for more of a national coverage. The fact is college hockey doesn't have a national appeal, sorry for having to keep repeating this.  I suspect CBS Sports will pull away from the doing select nationally televised Friday night NCHC games as well and instead pick up college basketball games.

If CBSSN cares only about basketball, then we should dump them.

If they want to maintain a relationship with the NCHC and have this exclusive contract, then they will have to up their game considerably.

Time for some outside the box thinking; even if some people here don't care for it.

I don’t even know why people are discussing this. Multiple outlets have already said that it is false.

People fail to realize that the conference of perennial champions on ESPN+ for a year or two will necessitate a move to ESPNU and ESPN2. An underrated aspect of the NCHC facilities, to include the new ones in Colorado, is their press boxes. You don't see those types of facilities when ESPN is broadcasting Atlantic Sun basketball with their announcers sitting at a folding table.
