Froen Fours keep the fan base alive...we had a 10 year gap between 87 and 97...we aren't making it this year, so we will have another 10 year gap...that is twice in my lifetime

With Berry I know they won't win at the NCHC Final Faceoff or the NCAA tournament. I miss the days where I had UND making the Frozen Four and beating anyone anywhere, that just isn't the case anymore.

I have to agree with some that Dillon didn't make the staff any better and he needs to go get experience at the NAHL, USHL, or WHL.

What a bummer, but I’m in the same boat - can count on my fingers the total number of games I’d missed in the last 15 years, before last year. Since then, I don’t even think twice about making any other plans on a Friday or Saturday night. ANY other plans. I’ve started to approach games with pure pessimism, hoping to be surprised if the team looks like they actually care and are willing to put in some effort.

If Berry is still here, I won’t be renewing my NCHC next year. Will be interesting to see what season ticket renewals look like, as that’s probably going to be the deciding factor for Berry over “passion” or team performance. As long as folks around GFK keep filling the REA, there will be no interest in making a difficult decision about one of their own. I’m afraid they’ll wait until it’s beyond obvious they need to make a change though; and by then it’s going to require a full rebuild. We shall see.

here's the biggest, saddest issue...some of you like me, some of you dont...I've been on this forum since 2003...I watched and bled Sioux hockey...until bubs...I still have my NCHC TV link, but I watched 80% of games between 2003 and 2017...I now watch 2 or 3 per year...

Yep

Having a lame duck coach that will be making recruiting decisions isn’t great though.  Even if he gets a few studs, the new coach is going to have to re-recruit them.  If a player is torn between a few programs, are they going to commit to a coach that could be gone the next year?  Tough position to be in if you don’t expect Berry to be the coach, unless he has a good year, and even then, does 1 good year deserve another extension?

With the portal as an option to players now, the coach basically has to re-recruit the players he has every year anyway. What is stopping Hobie or Sasha from saying to themselves "this is a sinking ship with Berry and I need to go elsewhere"? I know UND hockey isn't for every player but maybe it's been looked at the wrong way, maybe it's not for every coach either.

I think they will be fine. If you look at that stupid cesspool of a group on Facebook (All things Fighting Sioux), you will see that pretty much all of the people on there say the same thing and that they are okay with what's going on because us "negative" fans need to remember that they are just kids, and we can't always have a winning season.

I don't think that group represents most of our fanbase. It's social media, it always attracts the craziest and nuttiest.

If they are just kids, then they should be playing for the love of the sport, and NIL money wouldn't be as big as it has become.   With pay, and a free education come expectations.

bingo.. stopped being "just kids" when you financially gain from it

The decline in the hockey program relates directly to the decline in the basketball, football, and volleyball programs.

There is only one common factor among them all = the athletic department and their leadership (or lack thereof).

There are a lot of season ticket holders on there that hate when us "normies" criticize the program. Those people represent the money that is being brought into the university, with their season ticket purchase and their donation to the athletic department. I don't consider them as fans who are looking out for the best interests in the University/Program. Those are the fans that go to the REA and destination games because it's the "in thing" to do and the same ones that worship the ground that "mama gaber" walks on.

They stopped being kids when they turned 18. Yes, being a college athlete is hard but you said it best, "With pay, and a free education comes expectations". Do you think the Blackhawks and their fans give Connor Bedard because he's "just a kid"?

It's actually pretty remarkable when you step back and look at the full picture. Essentially every single UND program has been declining in unison. It might be tough to find a single other school in the MVFC, Summit or NCHC that has had worse overall athletic departments than UND has had across the board the past 2 seasons.

To make matters even worse, look at UND's closest peers, ND?U, SDSU and USD across all of their team sports for a direct comparison and woof, it's nearly a 180 flip of all winning records compared to UND's losing records across the board (or currently on track for losing records). FYI - hockey is the ONLY team sport at UND that ended with a winning record or is currently holding a winning record this season. And if hockey is the best UND has then things are even worse than I realized.

As for fan morale? Living in the Bismarck-Mandan area which I'd say could be considered a decent in-state neutral example, I'd venture to guess that of the "local" 4 schools gear, stickers and flags presence it is BY FAR in large NDSU appearances, followed by a large gap to 2nd place SDSU appearances, closely followed by UND and then rare USD appearances in a distant 4th.

I have been warning people about this for years now. And nobody wants to hear it or they make excuses as to why it "doesn't matter". SMH. :silly:

So it just feels a bit like things are snowballing and worsening at a pretty fast rate for UND athletics. The only bright spot right now is the excitement around the new football coaching staff that seem to be bringing a lot of energy and excitement. If we don't start seeing rapid changes for other teams now as well during their off seasons, I think Chaves either isn't taking his role seriously, or is clearly out of touch.

UND can't continue making changes 2-3 years too late because we're seeing the results from that shortfall currently. I hate the rotating door culture we're currently seeing in the NHL head coaches, but I also can't stand the decade long drag out of coaches getting 3-4 second chances that they dont deserve and are never able to course correct. It would be nice to find a happy medium between those 2 examples. If anything, get some excitement back with your fan base and cut the loosest fat and salvage any fan pride that's left out there after these embarrassing dry spells.

Should we be starting Fire Chaves chants as well? He surprisingly made a move for FB, maybe there’s an admin spot for Berry as well?

Armacost made the move

UND Hockey is behind when it comes to NIL plain and simple. They either need to beef up the collective or start recruiting like Hastings does and get some of the after thoughts/late bloomers. Gone are the days where kids will come here just for the facilities and "tradition". Part of the problem is just sheer numbers when it comes to the collective. UND has 110,000 living alumni, most BIG schools are graduating 40k/year. I do think it is time for a change, but I also think Brad and his staff are doing the best they can under the circumstances.

Please tell me what college has a graduating class of 40K?

I really don't believe the coaches are recruiting solely on facilities and tradition. The problem is what happens to players once they get here; they get worse not better. Berry and clearly not getting the best out of what they have.

correct, the university of minnesota is one of the largest universities in the country.  I think total undergrad enrollment is typically around 35k-40k, means 9k-10k per class if 100% graduated.  If 70% graduate, they are kicking out 6k to 7k per year.  More if you add in grad school, but most people's college loyalty is to where they did undergrad, not where they went to finishing school
