Someone tell me again how Chaves and Martinson are not doing things.

Quote

"The university is assisting us for a period of time, so our fundraisers can get on the road and get donors excited about it," Chaves said. "In the short term, we've already met with certain folks and they're excited about it."

The UND Alumni Association and Foundation has launched a webpage seeking donations for the 701 Award. Mike Mannausau, the vice president of the Alumni Association, said his team is currently informing donors about the program, why they're doing it and how it will help.

"We made decisions three-to-four years ago to put us in a revenue model where we're able to do this," UND deputy athletic director Erik Martinson said. "We're really proud of what we're trying to do and where we're doing it."

The NCAA sent out a Q&A to members clarifying some NIL activities are impermissible.

Here's a sampling of them:

Quote

Question: Are boosters or a collection of boosters permitted to have contact with prospective student-athletes (PSA) and discuss potential NIL opportunities should the individual decide to attend a particular school?
Answer: No. A booster or collection of boosters is not permitted to engage in recruiting activities, including recruiting conversations. When a booster’s interaction with a PSA includes encouraging the PSA to attend an institution, NCAA rules have been violated.

Question: It is clear that institutions may not compensate a student-athlete for use of NIL. Is it permissible for an entity closely associated with an institution to compensate student-athletes for use of their NIL?
Answer: No. Institutions may not use NIL transactions to compensate student-athletes for athletics participation or achievement or as an improper inducement. Any entity that is so closely aligned with an institution that it is viewed as an extension of the university is subject to the same NIL scrutiny as the institution and must adhere to NCAA rules and policy. This includes the prohibition on compensating student-athletes for use of their NIL. Further, institutions are accountable for such entities since they meet the NCAA’s definition of a booster — even if the group is formed as a separate 501(c)(3).

"It would seem, at this moment, the definition of NIL has different interpretations around the country," Chaves said.

So, what UND is basically saying is this:

... and is less likely to be found in non-compliance with NCAA rules. ;)

Big deal for competing for recruits vs Big Ten Schools, great news and great timing!

I'm guessing the timing is no accident or coincidence.

Glad to see UND is focusing on the academic side and particularly that there is a benefit for loyalty. NIL collectives are just a pandora's box, and while the NCAA may not be regulating them well, you can bet the IRS will be.  I fully expect in a couple of years, "student-athletes" being bankrupt from tax fines and penalties, much like pro athletes are with terrible investments.  Don't know what kind of requirements the U has, but it wouldn't be a terrible idea for all incoming athletes to get a boot camp in finance, media training and social media much like the pro sports leagues do with incoming rookies.

UND's 701 Awards - capped at $5980 a year; by comparison ...

The NIL technology company Opendorse found that among NIL deals completed or disclosed through its platform from July 1, 2021 through Aug. 31, 2022, Division I athletes earned an average of $3,063.

Some quick math shows that $1,000,000 (the approximate figure used in the Herald article) divided by $5,980 is just over 167.  Any idea how many student athletes are at UND?

About double that. 2022 EADA report showed 341 in unduplicated participation numbers, however 7 of those were practice players.
Each team will get an allocation of funds to give out as the coaches deem appropriate (assuming eligibility criteria per the guidelines is met).

Total: 215M, 198W for 413
Unduplicated* head count: 188M, 153W for 341

*This is a head count. If an individual participates on more than one team, count that individual only once on this line. <- This is where your CC and ITF and OTF teams are much the same people.

It’s definitely not NIL, there is a cap, and for hockey fans the team will see only a fraction of the $. It won’t compete with Michigan’s NIL for the top players but it’s a very good thing and it helps, well done UND. I’ll set up a revolving donation.

The article put the worst possible slant on charitable collectives, but the big ones like Ohio State’s are run very well and will comply with IRS rules. I donate and never planned to deduct. The Texas collective already has a disclaimer about deductibility

Since there’s little interest in a UND collective our players will need to do it on their own. Players with a lot of social media followers should monetize it. There’s a lot of businesses that would pay UND hockey players monthly, including car leases, for various forms of advertising—social media, billboards, …

UND plans to spend nearly $1 million annually in Alston Awards to athletes
The 701 Award will be contingent on academic performance and retention.

From the photo in the linked article, looks like Mom in Row A is utterly horrified and doesn't want Junior to hear any part of what Bill is saying.
