True. But I wouldn't say either one was an amazing goalie. Just thought Eidsness was marginally better.

Compare the stats. It just isn't close at all. Eidsness was the worst starting goalie UND had in a long time.

Precisely. Lammy was much better.

There certainly were a lot of greats, but many of those greats had an incredible supporting cast.   Therefore, if I had to pick the one player that I thought more often than not impacted the outcome of a game in UND's favour I think I would have to go with Jeff Panzer.

Mark Taylor, as mentioned above.  And that's really the end of the thread, in my opinion if talking all time.  For sure would have been our first Hobey in 1980 if it didn't start the following year in 1981 I would imagine.

Career points of 265 is 2nd most in school history behind Greg Johnson

92 points in senior year is 2nd highest total in school history behind Tony Hrkac

18 game winning goals is most in school history

Captain of WCHA and NCAA championship team; assisted on 1st goal in NCAA championship game before breaking collarbone.

Named U.S. College Player of the Year by the Hockey News.

As someone mentioned in a different thread, his teammates called him The King.

Even if you want to base your opinion on "big game" performance, look no further than Phil Sykes.  Caggiula played in 4 Frozen Four games and had 5 total points.  Sykes played in the same number and had 13 points.  Not sure if it's still the case but as of about five years ago that was still the highest total for Frozen Four points of any player since the 1950's.

Phil also had 9 of those 13 points in the two championship games in which he played, including a hat trick against Wisconsin.

Tony Hrkac was great and would've been even better but he didn't play 4 years at UND....

I became a Sioux fan when I moved to Grand Forks in 2005, so I don't really know about a lot of the players in the past, but what I've seen I can narrow it down to-

Forwards- Matt Frattin, Ryan Duncan, Caggiula

Defensemen- Chay Genoway, Ben Blood

Goalie- Eidsness

Impressive group, no doubt.

I've only followed the team closely since the 2010-2011 season (Pony Express senior year), so I have a very limited ability to judge. For me the list would consist of Knight, Kristo, and Drake.

Knight and Kristo, how quick this old dude forgets.  Yes, both very fine players at the collegiate level.

Don't get me wrong.  I thoroughly enjoyed watching Drake play at UND.  But I'm not sure he's even in my top 5 all-time UND players who stuck around four years.

Yes, he won a championship.  But so did guys like Taylor, Sykes, and Panzer, just to list a couple.

I would take Mark Taylor, Greg Johnson, Phil Sykes, Dixon Ward and Jeff Panzer over Drake.  That's no disrespect to him.  Those were some great players.

Greg Johnson was a three time Hobey finalist.  Think about that.  Phil Sykes was named one of the fifty greatest NCAA tournament players of all time.  Taylor, Johnson, Ward and the rest put up numbers that dwarfed Drake's numbers.  Drake scored 16 points and 24 points his first two seasons.  Johnson more than tripled that in each of his first two season.   Go ahead and try to name three players from Johnson's teams (that haven't coached at UND in the past two years) without looking at a media guide.

Drake was fun to watch.  I wish him well in his pro career.  But we need to be realistic here.

I'm an old dude so the "old days" seem better but we need to remember when comparing Drake's totals to Taylor's, Johnson's and Ward's numbers unless he's Gretzky-like they simply won't compare.  It's a different time and if I recall an article I read a year por two ago said avg total goals per game now in college hockey is about half what it was maybe 20-25 years ago.  So, of course Drake's numbers will pale in comparison to old timers.  I'm by no means saying Drake is Mark Taylor or Steve Johnson or Dixon War but need to keep in mind it makes it very hard to fairly compare players in different eras, no doubt.

Am I the only one on the Duncan train? He was so good! Plus, he had every intangible.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Duncan and he was a very fine college player, but didn't he play on a line with 2 players maybe better than himself (even he admitted that). And are we including "intangibles" (i.e. student-athlete) here or just best 4 year hockey player?

That's a very legitimate point.   Gaudy numbers from an earlier era do not make the whole case, just as Nattys don't--at least on this particular question.   I saw a lot of Greg J and not much of Taylor, so I really cannot compare them very well.  Without streaming coverage in those days, if you lived away you just didn't see the guys as much.  But I can say that Johnson was a dynamic force on the ice as a freshman--teams had to focus on him from day one.  Caggiula had a great career at UND, and we may very well not have won # 8 without him, but I just don't think you can compare the player he was as a freshman and sophomore with what Johnson was.

This is all for S & G, of course.  They are both Sioux, both had fine character, and both gave us fans more than we could have asked for.  As well as the others being discussed here.

As I said back then, ... 7 and 9 make 16.

Remember he red shirted because he transferred

Remember when he played at Ferris State and only got three years of eligibility at UND...
UND has had great players come through their program but the question is; "WHO WAS THE BEST FOUR YEAR PLAYER AT UND"? Mark Taylor...
