When are we going to see a new medical and law school in Fargo-Jamestown College. School of Science -Fargo. There is a well thought out plan in Fargo and you can see it taking shape. NDSU's campus is never going to be easier on the eyes than UND's. That'd require almost a complete reboot. Not a huge deal, doesn't seem to be preventing students from wanting to go there. Enrollment... they've been pretty even the past decade or so, yeah?

To me the financials aside his leadership was ONE of things I thought he lacked. Allowing departments to run amuck with no direction. Case in point would be the whole EERC debacle. He sudpends/fires a guy by email while having the cops escort him out after giving a positive review of the guy just months before. I'm not saying the guy shouldn't have been fired cause it looked like the guy had been a problem for awhile. Kelley put his head in the sand until the situation got out of hand and then still didn't take a hands on approach. He had other people do his dirty work while he hid in the background. The ability to deal with and manage difficult personalities is something great leaders possess. Kelley greatly lacked in this department. That's just one reason I didn't like Kelley. Not saying he's not a good person, just not a great leader. I'm sure UNDBIZ has some other specific reasons as well. Kelley inherited EERC leadership, as well as the nickname. By the time he was finished, both issues had been addressed. Kelley also oversaw the D1 transition, the birth of UAS, and a construction boom punctuated by a new med school, and endured a shaky period of 'leadership' from the Chancellor/SBoHE. Can't say whether he delegated effectively, but that is perhaps a question of style. Like head coaches, presidents get too much credit and too much blame. Maybe Kelley was not legendary, but terrible? Critique is fair, but slanting the facts is not. Can anyone honestly say that UND was, on balance, worse off when he left than when he arrived?

He probably would have retired a few years earlier if the nickname issue wouldn't have gotten drug out for so long. Not much he can do when the legislature starts passing laws... Having little to no access to the facts, here's what I can say about Kelley. A. He's better then his predecessor B. He was student friendly while I was a campus student, but his popularity with staff amd students took a nose dive in his later years. C. He botched the nickname from start to finish. In the early years, he tried to play it neutral but it was later revealed he was trying to retire the name as quickly as possible. Then there was the nickname committee and vote debacle. The logo design I leave on Schafer. D. While several new buildings were built (with private donations for these projects) and several were renovated, other buildings fell into disrepair. E. Several teams and majors were cut right after his administration. It's conceivable that these could have been avoided for some (likely not all) with better budgeting during his tenure. F. Due to lack of transparency, I don't know how much of C-E are really his fault, as opposed to the fault of state officials. Ultimately I do think he tried to do what he thought was best, but a lot went wrong at the end of his watch and his lack of transparency led to distrust and dislike by students, teachers and alumni alike which makes it hard to see him in a favorable light. In short, I don't expect any alumni to donate money for a Kelley Hall anytime soon.

Imagine the uproar if Sundogs had won, it was his preferred name (he did say his choice for a name was eliminated in the 1st round of voting)
moser53
There was a press release fron High Ed a year or 2 ago. It said the plan is to nake UND an online University. And NDSU to grow enrollment and have then on Canpus. With the building boon on SUs campus you can see that is still the plan. SU goes to the High Ed board and says they need new on Canpus housing because you don't really have the college experience unless your on Canpus. Al Carlson was on KFGO today. Talking about colleges. He didn't say SU should grow by nane. What he did say was this. Let these canpuses grow as big as they want to if they want to. Growing SU is th plan. Online at UND is the plan. Political biases nake it hard for sone people to see or adnit it. Laptop problen the letter after kl won't type
