yzerman19 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Aren't those like bowling alley machine doobs? Has anyone on this site ever actually purchased or used a rough rider rubber??? I hope not- that question was rhetorical by the way, I don't want to hear some internet enabled machismo. Quote
gfNDfan Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 ....and they have the worst logo in college athletics. No that seasick son-of-yosemite sam avatar you have is the WORST logo in college athletics! Why does he have crossed hockey sticks on the side? Did US Cavalry (yes CAVALRY not CALVARY!:-o) soldiers have to fight off a lot of french canadian hockey players on the plains??? 1 Quote
NoiseInsideMyHead Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 On www.umes.edu, they are referred to as Fighting Hawks all over. Not quarreling with you, but I find the opposite. Which is very interesting, and confusing. At http://www.umeshawks.com/genrel/mdes-genrel.html (a listing of 12+ years worth of press releases), the word "Fighting" appears once.At http://www.umeshawks.com/ot/mdes-store.html (the online store), there are zero instances of "Fighting". Same for the school bio on the athletics page (http://www.umeshawks.com/school-bio/mdes-school-bio.html) and media relations page (http://www.umeshawks.com/media-relations/mdes-media-relations.html).Is this the ultimate identity crisis or what? Cratter Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 If UND wanted a unique to North Dakota bland name they should have picked Prairie Chickens. North Dakota is only one of a few states left they habitat. Quote

Siouxphan27 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 OK. @ Siouxphan27 and snooty89, Why would you choose Hawks, something common, over Roughriders, something unique? I think roughrider fans struggle to express their incredulity with this question, and it comes across insulting and condescending.I feel there has to be more to it than just being unique. Roughriders may be unique to college sports but that doesn't automatically make it a great choice in my mind. I voted Nodaks. I felt it was the only choice remaining that, depending on how they used the name and what the logo was, could be linked to a source of pride at UND and the state.Roughriders would be a contrived name and would not create any extra enthusiasm on campus compared to Hawks IMO. there's nothing Roughrider about UND. the only time I saw a 10 gallon hat and (ass)chaps on campus was at a Halloween party years ago... to me, if we were to go with a human-based mascot/logo , it would have to fit into the atmosphere and culture of the campus. Roughriders just doesn't fit the bill IMO. this is UND, not Bonanzaville.I don't care how many times I hear "we are the Roughrider state", it's a silly, inaccurate nickname for the state that no one I know takes seriously. So for those reasons, and for the much less important reasons of it's a condom, it's two guys doing it as described by urban dictionary, it will be shortened to "Ridas" which IMO sounds asinine, and lastly it's the name of the local high school, i choose not to vote for roughriders.Yes, Hawks is popular. But fighting hawks, with a great logo design and strong support from the student body will be successful IMO. 3 2 Quote

Siouxphan27 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Roughriders less ND-related than Hawks? Lady Riders doesn't work for the womens teams?IMO yes. i see hawks all over the place, every day in North Dakota. I'm confused; wouldn't the men be the Lady Riders? Quote

Vegas_Sioux Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 There exists one other DI school with the Fighting Hawks name, beside the 40 odd adjective-Hawk schools:Maryland-Eastern Shore Fighting HawksEven with the adjective, it not unique.now leave Easton out of this. They didn't pick their p.c. name Quote

SIOUXFAN97 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 nice work siouxvolley...so it's okay to "take" the nickname from a small university somewhere in maryland but its not okay to "take" a nickname from a small high scholl in north dakota...so "fighting hawks" isn't even unique to d1... 1 Quote

Guess it's ok to steal from an historically black college, but not ok to take a state nickname that we have rightful claims to. Quote

I think roughrider fans struggle to express their incredulity with this question, and it comes across insulting and condescending.I'm cool with either of them. Voted for Fighting Hawks in the first vote, and Roughriders in the 2nd. Didn't like Nodaks. There are many reasons to vote for each choice. FH- Keeps fighting in the name. Isn't controversial. Roughriders- Unique other than a local high school team. Let's be honest does any other college outside of Grand Forks care that we stole it? NO. It is a Grand Forks issue. Possibilities of a great unique nickname. Just hate being talked down upon when the reality is there is going to be 35% of the voters unhappy that Fighting Hawks is our new nickname with them saying that everyone is so stupid for choosing it. 3 Quote
dmksioux Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 (edited) This has been brought up numerous times, but: don't want to copy Red River, Roughriders isn't really a ND name, doesn't fit the women's teams, not unique in that other teams besides RR use it (I know FH isn't either so it doesn't apply to either), and most importantly, I TOTALLY DISLIKE THE NAME!!! Probably a few more I could name if I wasn't so sick of this subject.I don't necessarily agree with this. If you look at the definition of a Rough Rider: Looks like it's a person (meaning male or female) who rides horses.rough·rid·erˈrəfˌrīdər/nounNORTH AMERICANplural noun: rough-riders; plural noun: rough ridersa person who breaks in or can ride unbroken horses.a person who rides horses a lot.a member of the cavalry unit in which Theodore Roosevelt fought during the Spanish-American War.noun: Rough Rider; plural noun: Rough Riders Would people be more apt to support Rough Riders if UND chose not to go with ties to Teddy? fightingsioux4life Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 very true. you are about the only Roughrider supporter who posts that doesn't call people who have voted for other options uninformed morons. When have I called anybody names? Please find an example and I'll apologize right here, right now. Quote

The crux of the whole argument right here, and I would make the same if Roughriders rallied and ended up the name.If the logo is generic and is just plain awful... that support will dry up very fast.
