Favorite Sioux - Bison football game memories

So what are your favorite Sioux - Bison football game memories from the past?   I went to UND from 90-94 so lots of great games, some wins some losses.  But being out on the field when the brought down the goal posts was pretty certainly quite the memory.

'93 goal post coming down.  I was 11 at the time, and didn't really know the significance of the victory.  I didn't even know that could be done with a goal post.

The 1991 game in Fargo.......UND lost but that was a great game to watch.  Lots of offense, back and forth.  NDSU went up by 7 with a couple of minutes left, maybe less.  UND drove down the field and got down to about the 5 or 10 yard line if I recall, and failed to convert on 4th and goal as time expired.  Was just a great game to watch, and was the only one I saw at Dacotah Field.

Worst:  Sitting in Dacotah field in the mid-late 80's watching Tyrone Braxton and the rest of the Bison stomp UND 49-0?

Best:  Watching Digger Anderson? stuff NDSU running back at the end of the game allowing the Sioux to keep their lead and win the game.  The reason it's my favorite was due to the 3 Bison fans next to me in the bar, getting down on their knees and hold hands for that last play.  I wasn't expecting them to do that and it was even funnier after UND stopped the Bison.

I also remember a pretty good game in the late 80's in Grand Forks; SU ended up winning by a TD but it was a back and forth game.  UND couldn't stop their run, and NDSU couldn't stop Kurt Otto? and UND's receivers. (Mark Poolman, Tracy Martin)

Here is a list of recent results on Wikipedia.  Yep looks like 49-0 that game, and was probably the '88 game you are recalling with Otto.   And look....they've updated it for 2015 already....with NDSU winning 52-10 lol

That was a great game.  Todd Kovash was the QB.  

The good:  '94 Kevin Klancher and the avalanche of offense at the FFD.  '95 NFL Films game at Memorial.  '98 Kleinsasser and Phillip Moore show.  

The bad: '95 playoff drubbing on home turf.  

The ugly:  62-13 in '86 at Memorial.

For me the best Sioux/Bison game memory was a personel one.  It was the last time they played.  The 2003 game.  We were standing at the student door first in line and an Alerus rep came up to me and the guys I was with and asked if we wanted to drive the helmet car around the parking lot.  Obviously we said yes.  We went into the Alerus, got the helmet car and made our way into the tailgate lot.  Did we drive around by the UND fans?  Hell no!!  The first place we went was straight to the area that the Bison fans were tailgating,  I was in the back waving my Sioux flag as we slowly drove thru the sea of Bison fans wondering what the hell we we were doing!!  After that, we saw the band and team pull up in the busses so we figured we should lead them in!!  Being able to lead the team in while riding in the back of the helmet car as fans are going crazy is something that still gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

To put the icing on the cake, after we parked the helmet car inside, the Alerus staff person said that she needed help brining the Nickel trophy over from the South side of the field to where the Sioux ran in.  We obviously said yes again!!  So each one of us took turns carrying the nickel across the turf from one end of the Alerus to the other.  We also got to put our stuff down on our seats in the front row, 50 yard line!

Having that game be so close and hearing the Alerus rocking was great.  When we stopped them on 4th down in OT to win, I don't think I have jumped so high in my life!!  What a moment.  The players then came over to the student section  with the nickel so we all could get a closer look.  The picture the took was on the front page of the Fargo Forum the next day and I have it framed.  Because I was in it!!

By far the best UND football game day experience I have ever had!

1998.  Jimmy outrunning the DBs on that TD.  We were in the end zone that he was coming towards.  Pandemonium.

Not quite as fun as running on the field in Florence after the championship, though.

Funniest memory:Both 98 and 99 games in GF when a unnamed guy jumped the railing and tackled the NDSU fan running on the track with a flag and busted the pole over his knee. 

Best memory: tie between 93 and 03

Worst memory: 95 playoff loss.

So, I don't remember much of the game.  Maybe I shouldn't relate this story since the title thread is "favorite memories", but it was a cold, snowy day in the mid 1980's.  We hit the liquor store for some grog at half-time because we'd finished the schnapps.  We were hitting it pretty hard..  Well, anyway, we were sitting reasonably close to the NDSU band, and some guy was wearing a "Sioux Suck" baseball hat in the middle of the band.  Feeling brave, I  pushed my way through the band, grabbed his hat and ran.  There was a chorus of yelling behind me so I figured the whole NDSU band was after me.  I was running as fast as I could (could never run very fast) and didn't think I could spare the time to look behind me, so I kept running straight out of the stadium until I was about a block away.   In hindsight, I doubt anyone took more than a couple of steps after me (if that).   So I can imagine what I looked like.  But what the heck, that was a long time ago.

2001 in Grand Forks got a ticket at the last minute so ended up sitting in the visitor section - ugh. Lough mouth bison fan behind me was snorting during the pre-game and saying stuff like "there's no one on their team that would see the field for SU". He got pretty quiet later on. I've never had the attitude that a fan needs to put down the other team and its student athletes in order to support his own team - to each his own.

The bad - I was on campus in the late '70s - there were some tough ones.

The good - the early 80s - Biolo, Muckenhern, Henry Jordan (dad played for Green Bay Packers), they turned it around for a few years.

Just want to thank Bubba and UND for having the balls to step up and make this game and the return of the rivalry happen even if it is only every 3-4 years. This would not have happened if not for UND stepping up and doing what they knew was the best thing for the state.

1966.    The teams were ranked No. 1 and 2 in the country.    Sports Illustrated was there.  Memorial Stadium was packed.   Extra bleachers were brought in to fill the north end zone before there were ever any  bleachers in the north end zone.  It was a beautiful fall day.  The year before, the Bison won 6-3 in Fargo on their way to a National Championship.  The Sioux went 9-1 in '65 and pounded the piss out of Northern Illinois in the Mineral Water Bowl.   These were truly the best teams in the country.  

So, in '66, with the Bison coming to Grand Forks in late October, anticipation was  again running high.  Both teams were loaded with talent.  Both teams were 5-0, although NDSU's wins to date included  a then patsie Saint Thomas College.  North Dakota's roster included four players who would play in the NFL.    Errol Mann.  Corey Colehour.  Pete Pornish.  Roger Bonk.  Ron Bergh.  Jim Hester.   Just to name a few of the Fighting Sioux. It was the largest crowd to ever see a football game anywhere.  Ever.  Or at least so goes the legend fifty years later.   A hard fought game ended with a late NDSU field goal, into those new bleachers, and an 18-15 final.   I was crushed.   We were all crushed.  Except the maggots from the farm school to the south  who were run out of town on a rail as quickly as could be done.   We hated the Bison, and their fans.  In fairness, they hated us too.  Probably mostly because Sioux fans were then, and clearly still are,  just plain smarter than Bison fans.  Generally in better shape and much better looking too.

1966.   The Sioux went out to Bozeman the following week and were handed their heads by the Bobcats, 59-21.   Those were the only two losses of the year.  This was also the  year in which the Potato Bowl first came to town, a 41-0 drubbing of the state school from the  junior potato producing state in the country,  Idaho State.   The schedule featured heavyweights every week of the season.  Under Whitey Helling, the Sioux were co-champs of  the NCC in 1966, then easily the best conference that college football has ever seen, bar none.   North Dakota went on to end its season by drubbing Parsons College in the Pecan Bowl to finish 8-2. 

The mid-sixties were the hey days of this rivalry.  Don't let anyone ever tell you any differently.   Today, fifty years later?   UND 24.  NDSwho   23.   Book it.

I have always enjoyed this rivalry.  I have friends from both schools.   In the 60's watched the games on TV.  the 80's were tough to watch.  I remember Roger Thomas hard years making UND competitive again.   a couple years really stand out for me.  the Year Mooney stole the ball and ran for a TD.  It was very cold and I had a single ticket on the visitor side.  While waiting for the gate to open to get into Memorial stadium, everyone was talking about how cold it was.  There was a mixture of Sioux and Bison fans all waiting to get in to the stadium.  I looked around and close to me was Ozbun, president of NDSU with a fur hat on and was complaining how cold it was.  I had a Sioux stocking cap on and asked if he wanted to trade hats.  we all laughed at that, even Ozbun.  The play of Mooney was so puzzling to the fan were I was seated.  Nobody knew it was a TD until he was almost in the Endzone.  loved that play. 

The other memory is the game Kleinsasser ran for the TD.  I and some friend mostly Bison and some Sioux were attending the game together.  My Bison friends could not believe the run or could I.  Jimmy made the Sioux so proud.

I too would like to thank, Bubba, Faison and staff for making this game possible.  This will be a very good game for the state of North Dakota.  I believe we have the defense to win this game.  At any rate this will be a good season and I smell conference title.  one game at a tome.
