The Sicatoka Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Never understood why this is so hard for some people to understand. Seems there are many things in that category. Quote
mksioux Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Ames High School Cyclones in Ames, Iowa, home of the Iowa State Cyclones. Which came first? I bet you Iowa State had their nickname first. I have no issue with a high school copying a university. A university copying the local high school feels different to me. 1 Quote
George M. Bluth Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 North Dakota Nokotas. Do people who support that name actually think it sounds good? That was my thought too. That's why I think if Nokota is to be the nickname, it needs to be Fighting or Charging or Wild or SOMETHING between Dakota and Nokota. Quote

The Sicatoka Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Enough with Flickertails. A flickertail is a gopher. Our mascot would be a gopher. Has everyone lost their mind? Between that (flickertail = gopher) and the North Stars idea (Minnesota state motto) why don't we just rename the state to West Minnesota? 1 Quote
The Sicatoka Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 So to recap on the possibility of using Roughriders for the new UND nickname: The good people of Grand Forks and anyone ever associated with RRHS need to give written consent that they approve with the potential duplication of the nickname...or that RRHS will adopt the new nickname "Little Roughriders". Also either the university or RRHS need to phyiscally move its location to fulfill the criteria as to be located more than 1.5 miles from each other but within 65 miles based on the geographic relationship between Kindred and Valley City. Did I miss anything? You need to have something Minnesota, like their state motto or state nickname, thrown into the mix. Quote

zonadub Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 North Dakota Nokotas. Do people who support that name actually think it sounds good? Yes, I also have no problem with North Dakota Wild Nokotas or even North Dakota Charging Nokotas. Would you prefer North Dakota Nodaks? Quote
petey23 Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 I think by 2008 people knew the writing was on the wall - you really can't use any sales numbers for the last 3 years as any type of bench mark - thoughts on a new name/logo matching these numbers?I was just throwing the numbers out there without comment. I thought you had kind of wondered what they actually were. Obviously there was a huge rush on Sioux merchandise when it became apparent that this would be the last opportunity to do so. I would imagine that if they decide to choose a new name and logo that there would be an initial spike in sales but any long term projection would be tough to make as it would depend on the quality and popularity of the name and logo, having good and fresh designs, and of course the success of our Athletic Teams.......before NDSU's move to D1, UND merchandise actually outsold NDSU merchandise by a pretty substantial amount at FARGO Scheels. petey23 Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 top three:1. Roughriders3. Nokotas3. FlickertailsI'm okay with any of the three.Let's get this done asap.Don't like any of them. Quote
Oxbow6 Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Don't like any of them. Then you can go to Walmart and buy your 3 pack of Haines green t-shirts in anticipation of the UND Fighting Greens! 2 Quote

A university copying the local high school feels different to me. Roughriders make the most sense of any on that list. If the only reason people have an issue with it is because of a high school in the same town, then they need to get over it. If Red River had a different name, I would guess that Roughriders would be the overwhelming favorite at this point. There is no college or pro team that has Roughriders which is good enough for me. It's going to be nearly impossible to find a name that no other school, semi pro team, professional team somewhere has used. North Dakota is the Roughrider State, like it or not. As has been pointed out, the highest award the state give out is the Roughrider award. It just makes the most sense... 4 Quote
dmksioux Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 High Schools using the name Cavalry... None. College teams using Cavalry None. Professional teams using Cavlary None. Cavalry has uniqueness. Inevitably, Cavalry will be shortened to Cavs...as in the Cleveland "Cavs" Cavliers and Virginia "Cavs" Cavaliers...Which is why it is third on my list, behind Roughriders and Nokota (Fighting Nokes). I won't list all of the high schools that have Cavaliers/Cavs, but it's longer than your list of high schools with Rough Riders... 2 Quote
nodakhoops Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 High Schools using the name Cavalry... None. College teams using Cavalry None. Professional teams using Cavlary None. Cavalry has uniqueness. I actually like Cavalry but I don't think it flies. You do know what the 7th Calvary was responsible for right? Rob Port was all over this when it was first on the list, I'm not sure if Calvary deviates enough from that. If we did end up the Calvary i'd be ok with it, but I don't think it gets very far based on that. As for the uniqueness of Rough Riders I think you are way off. Minor league teams and high school teams are not a big deal. The only one of those with any real brand awareness is the CFL team and they are in Canada. Rough Riders is plenty unique and it ties in well with this state. Besides if you read that letter to the editor I linked a few pages back you would've seen that in the SEC alone there are 3 teams named the Tigers....Roughriders is plenty unique. You could nitpick any name if you wanted to start digging through high schools and minor league teams. Quote
breakin face Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Yes, I also have no problem with North Dakota Wild Nokotas or even North Dakota Charging Nokotas. Would you prefer North Dakota Nodaks? No that would be worse. Roughriders, Cavalry, No Nickname would be ideal for the final vote. Quote

Popular Post nodakhoops Posted May 21, 2015 Popular Post Posted May 21, 2015 You're kidding, right? 7th Cavalry? Custer? Battle of Little Big Horn? Wounded Knee Massacre? There was also the 1st Dakota Cavalry Battalion- they were charged with keeping the settlers safe from Indian uprisings during the Civil War time period. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Dakota_Cavalry_Battalion Because of what their duties were, I can't hardly believe when it comes down to the final countdown Cavalry will be considered as a nickname option. I prefer no nickname, but wouldn't mind Cavalry- it's a part of the history of North Dakota, unlike- you guessed it- Roughridas! The Roughriders were never here. They were from the southwestern states. They were from hot climate regions by design, as those men were used to the weather conditions they would encounter in Cuba. As a whole, they were together for just a few months from the beginning of training to the end of their fighting in Cuba. There was one member of the 1250+ Roughrider group who was from North Dakota. His name was Jesse Langdon. He was a 16 year old boy from Fargo who knew Teddy Roosevelt because Langdon's father was the Head Veterinarian at the North Dakota Ag College, and had worked Roosevelt's cattle. As a side note, a few years after he was with the Roughriders, Jesse claimed to have psychic powers. The link of North Dakota to the Roughriders is virtually non-existent, unless honoring a 16 year old boy from the NDAC is the plan for UND. Yes.....I realize there is a Roughrider award. I realize the ND Tourism Dept. has done a great job trying to sell North Dakota as the roughrider state. I've been to the Medora Musical- at the end of it, when they charge up San Juan Hill.... that hill's just southwest of Dickinson, right? I think it's nuts the state sells itself on a fictitious history that has been repeated so many times now that some people mistake it for the truth. If it is chosen it will definitely be unique- UND will be the only U. with a nickname chosen to honor a fairytale history. Who cares whether it was the ND Tourism Dept or not the fact of the matter is that name is engrained in the states culture. I've heard this state referred to as the Rough Rider state for as long as I can remember, and based on things like having the highest honor the state gives called the Rough Rider award I think the majority of the people here like being referred to as the Rough Rider state. It used to even be on liscense plates. How nice of branding for UND would that be? Go look up why North Carolina is call the Tar Heel state, most people don't know but guess what the nickname of their flagship University is. Indiana is called the Hoosier state and their are many ideas where that came from but most don't know. Guess what their flagship schools nickname is? North Carolina Tar Heels Indiana Hoosiers I don't care how many ND residents actually fought for the Rough Riders, the fact is at some point along the way ND residents became proud of their state by referring to it as the Rough Rider state. I see no issue with calling the states flagship University by the state's nickname. There are plenty of other names that will work, but none make as much sense as Rough Riders. 8 Quote
Cratter Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Again, (besides "other") the majority of UNDs biggest fans (this site) like\prefer Roughriders. Welcome to the Roughrider State. Quote
