I agree it's all too easy to speculate and jump to conclusions, but there are a ton of circumstances that could have led up to this and it's bad enough that it happened without everyone's assumptions of the worst. I'm truly hopeful for him and his family that he's being treated at Regions simply because they're the best, and it's not indicative of the severity of his injury. Thoughts and prayers to him and his family, for a speedy recovery.

Really? I didn't know Altru has a 'frostbite unit'. When was that implemented? Altru does have a wide range of specialists. Sometimes they are short a specialist or two because of retirement, the doc left, illness, vacation, etc. Many patients and/or their families elect to get treatment elsewhere; even sober ones get airlifted to different facilities. Sometimes they get airlifted to as far away as Fargo! Reasons vary from availability of a particular specialist, personal preferance for a larger city hospital, a particular physician or department, proximity to family, PRIVACY, etc.

Altru does not have a "frostbite center", and Regions doesn't have a true frostbite unit either...Regions is a level 1 Trauma Center and they have the regions best burn unit...burn trauma and severe frostbite trauma apparently are very similar in treatment for preserving tissue...By the way, I am with you 100% against the speculators and rumor mongers.

I don't care how Kristo got frostbite, I only am concerned that it happened and that he get the best care so he can achieve the best possible outcome.

Any contributing factors I'm sure will be dealt with at a later time by Danny and his family as it should be. We have no right or expectation to know the details.

Whether he can make it back this season is of little concern, I just hope is is able to get 100% healthy and continue with his career in the future.

Here is a Fact for all you: Krisko, can flat out play... Saturday night at the CC game he was one of the best if not the best skater on the ice. No-matter the cause, I wish danny a speedy recovery and hope to see him in the Kelly Green soon.

I think that alot of the speculation surrounding this very unfortunate incident is partially fueled by disappointment and a bit of anger.

The simple fact is, no matter how it happened, our favorite hockey team is down a very significant player. In a year that we have the team talent that could possibly be the best in the nation at the end of the year, to have this happen really SUCKS!!!!

My hope is that Danny recovers with no lasting effects and he can continue on with his hockey career.

Jebus, people!

There are two different things going on here, only one of which matters in the immediacy: DannyK is suffering from a pretty serious weather-related injury. Let's all try to send positive, healing vibes in his direction, and if you are so inclined, pray for his healing and recovery.

The longer-term "thing" is that, yes, there is a bit of a pattern of over-indulging on the part of some of the hockey players. I trust the University, the athletic department and the coaching staff also see the pattern, and are or will be addressing it.

Now... let's not restrict that to JUST the hockey players. That goes across the student-athlete spectrum. Heck, that's college students in general.

It is so stupid that people are singling out athletes as bigger drinkers than the rest of the UND student population. I was NOT an athlete at UND and I partied on the weekends like most COLLEGE STUDENTS!

Bottom line, Danny Kristo is injured and needs prayers and support. If you are not going to offer this, SHUT UP! mad.gif

I can speculate that Danny's injury was due to extended exposure to extremely frigid temperatures. However, given that frostbite can occur rapidly when the elements are so harsh I cannot speculate as to why or how long he was exposed. I also believe that if we are concerned about Danny's welfare we take a moment and say a prayer. However, if we are more concerned about the dangers of alcohol and how it affects a young persons judgement, as appears to be the accusatory finger pointed in this thread, then we should take steps to mitigate the same! We have exhaled a lot of hot air since this terrible occurrence, but what are we going to do to insure it doesn't happen again? Danny is not the only friend, room mate, team mate, student that has ventured out on such an ugly night regardless of any ingestion of alcohol, that probably shouldn't have been alone! If you see someone outside when the elements are so harsh - pick them up, if someone ventures outside - follow them, if it's you - take a phone and dress accordingly! I preach the above with sincere wishes that Danny make a speedy and total recuperation.

I posted this yesterday in another thread when this first surfaced. Others have posted similar in this thread. It needs to be read again by some:

Regardless of how this happened, there is a young man sitting in a hospital bed at Regions hospital right now, who might lose a toe, toes, or an entire foot. Try to remember that. We have all made mistakes, some fueled by alcohol, some, not. Good luck to Danny down in St Paul.

I think that the point that many here are trying to make is this;

Out of respect for the first point you made in your post we should refrain from discussions regarding the second point you made in your post.

no 1 is saying that alcohol was not involved, but given the fact that it may not have been a part of the scenario and the seriousness of the situation for danny kristo and his family it is disrespectful to have these discussions at this point. it is a free country and people can post in say what I want.

But once again what people on here are suggesting is that you consider what your saying and where you are saying it.

Blogs are a form of media. Posting with integrity in a situation like this is the right thing to do.

I think you can cast the alcohol abuse issue net wider yet. A couple weeks ago there was outrage on this board about taking away alcohol from college sporting events. At each Sioux game I encounter NUMEROUS folks who have had more than a couple to many. It's a bit hypocritical to be ragging on student athletes for having a drink, yet fighting for the right to get hammered at a sporting event. (I do realize that many student athletes are underage and hence they are breaking the law by having one sip.) Drinking on campus is an issue. Drinking off campus is an issue. Unfortunately, drinking in general is usually the common denominator when things go bad. For the record I oppose stopping alcohol sales. Alcohol is legal and as such it should be allowed.

As far as athletes getting a break, that really isn't the case. When a "normal" 20 year is at a party drinking, or at a bar, nobody cares. When first round NHL pick guy does the same everyone knows who he is, people are taking pictures/videos, calling friends... There are certainly benefits, but also alot of negatives.

i knew i would catch a lot of flack for my opinion and rightfully so, as all of us on here bleed kelly green, and PINK ;) i wish nothing but full recovery for danny and hopefully he can resume a promising hockey career. this topic will get beat down in many other message boards (which is fine). my responses were sort of taken out of context as i simple meant that I COULD SEE ALCOHOL BEING INVOLVED in this incident. i grow frustrated every year when the sioux hockey team has a great team and they get side tracked by something that involves alcohol and it derails their season! the thing is how do you reach these guys and get them to focus on the bigger picture? im sorry if i offended anyone with my opinion but its my opinion and i will stand behind it.

Out of curiosity, how many of you that are saying he was transferred to Regions because it was "too severe" for Altru or too whatever for Altru have considered that hey....Danny is from Eden Prairie, MN. And guess what, St. Paul is a heck of a lot closer to Eden Prairie than Grand Forks is..maybe, his family wanted him in St. Paul to be close to them and for privacy issues with things travelling faster in GF than in the cities?

Regardless of what happened or how it happened like others have said, WHO CARES? There is a young man in a hospital bed that needs your thoughts and prayers, NOT YOUR ACCUSATIONS.

i will prolly catch flax for this response too, but i also thought about that for a minute and if it wasn't severe enough I HIGHLY DOUBT he would go back to st. paul to get checked out if it was minor frostbite. if it wasn't too severe he could get it taken care of here in grand forks and take a few days off and practice with the team later. you don't go to the best hospital in the area that takes care of frostbite just for the heck of it you go there because you probably have a severe case of it!

i know its the best hospital because a friend of mine got frostbite on the bottom of her feet because she was drunk and decided to walk around with no shoes on outside.

That makes sense, to a degree. However, if it wasn't incredibly serious, there's not much reason to wanting to be near home and around your family either.

Hak's weekly press conference...

He just talked to Danny's parents and reiterated that he's not going to say anything more about the injury, the family wants privacy.

He has no timeframe for return, frostbite is serious, he's beginning treatment.

Asked if Danny violated any team rules, he said no.

It's best to assume my summary is incorrect and watch it yourself, before trying to quote me anywhere....
