The CCHA uses the same format and schedule as the NCHC.

Atlantic Hockey actually starts their playoffs this upcoming Wednesday, which serve as play-in games to the quarterfinals, so they have 4 rounds of playoffs.  Games are played at home sites of higher seeds.

The ECAC is similar to AHA in that they have play-in games to the quarterfinals, but those games are next weekend, not mid-week.  They accomplish this by hosting the semi-finals and championship on the same weekend at a neutral site (Lake Placid), much like all conferences used to do.

And lastly, Hockey East still has another weekend of the regular season, then mid-week play-in games to the quarterfinals, then single-game quarterfinals at home sites, then the semi-finals and championship at the TD Garden in Boston.

I don't know if any one of these formats is inherently better than any other.  A lot of it has to do with how many teams are in the conference and their proximity to a good neutral site venue.  It would be nice to whittle down the conference playoffs to 2 weekends.  It just seems odd that a conference tournament needs to take longer than the NCAA tournament.  Maybe reduce the number of teams that make the conference tournaments?  It would place more emphasis on the regular season if only semi-finals and championship games were played.

 

I'm for going to single elimination for the conference tournament like B1G and Hockey East did to match the NCAA tournament.

Conference tourney is a money maker so dont expect that to happen. This year should have pretty solid attendance in big arenas. Best of three means box office.

Im not crazy about stretching out the semis and the championship.  Just let the high seed host the semis and the final. 

Don't think midweek games are realistic with geography of the NCHC. Much easier for HEA and B1G.

I’ll say, the cost of tickets to see the semi-final AND the championship games are more than what the ticket package was at the X. $62 for semi and $78 for final….. $140 is a bit spendy

Good for the schools that they get that money now although those prices seem steep for sure.

Anyone know what the cost is for students?  They are definitely taking a big risk charging that much for tickets.  I don’t think they will sell out.

Not to be pedantic, but my job involves a decent amount of math, probabilities, statistics, etc. and checking everyone else's work. With all of the numbers rounded, my message to the board/clients would be 90% since that involves subtracting one number from 100% rather than adding up three.

We need to break their spirit early in both games. Put it out of reach early. Leave no doubt. And I don't care if they have Patrick Roy in net, we need to do this.
