I just wish there was a bit of transparency with how much an athlete receives when they transfer and find a new home. I think that would either help fans understand or I guess think they’re even bigger idiots, depending on situation.

It would probably help other players as well.

Can we dispense with the 'heartfelt' love letters when players leave a school?

They all do it but if they were believed all of what they post they wouldn't be leaving.

lol kid was here for 11 months

Quick dollars versus playing time and getting the opportunity to play at the next level…

There’s no question that staying at UND for most players actually increases their likelihood of being drafted, despite what you might think.

Having to move to a new state, new program, new locker room, new staff, all for money, diminishes your likelihood of making it to the next level.

Sure you’ll play against a higher level of competition, but if you don’t succeed given all the extra stressors you’ve put on yourself with moving, then it was all for not.

To me it’s a no brainer that the successful players stay at UND, not only because fans want them to, but because it is better for the players themselves. Even if the kid makes $100k, or even $500k, that pales in comparison to being on an NFL or CFL (particularly NFL) roster for 1-2 years …

For some, especially those who get 7 figures, I get it; but for most this is a shot in the dark that will bite them.

Stay at UND. Get developed. Don’t be bought.

Kenny Golladay on line one for you.

Maybe I have become numb to the portal or something but none of these have really hit me like ah !@#$. I mean Fleming I wasn’t expecting but I don’t know I just feel like we can replace him.

Isaac can have aspirations.  Everyone should.  I am not trying to fan flames, he has a family to take care of.  But the 6 pass plays from the 1 we all remember, going for failed home run deep balls on fourth and one, and for whatever reason failing to consistently establish the short to intermediate  passing game, my observation from the Lazy Boy is he has plenty of ground to plow at this level.

I do hope he retains his job, but Schmidt has been to the Show and I wonder what he is thinking in terms of OC.

Higgins hadn’t even played. Who left who?

Yeah good chance he saw a difficult time climbing the depth chart with Jerry having 2 years left, Sulik right behind him and Brooks coming in plus JTJ if he sticks around.

I do believe that Etienne is Fruechte’s first QB he recruited.

Farewell posts are just the thing to do.

And also suggests that transferring is oftentimes just “the thing to do” and not something that involves a thoughtful process.

So we shouldn’t overreact now either.

Unfortunate (and ironic) that modern college football is more and more pressuring student-athletes to make decisions without thought behind it …

In the future, we’ll realize the complete lack of rules was probably a bad idea, but if you’re focusing on dollars, then this is the world we live in and I suppose the correct way of growing the brand (but not necessarily the values the game is based on, however)…

I agree with this completely. No reason at all to panic. This is just the norm in college football right now, and most are replaceable.

Whose next?

im afraid its just getting foing

Maybe but what’s the point in a player waiting to announce their intentions? I get the portal isn’t even technically open yet but I would think players want it to be known earlier rather than later for their suitors.

So far I'm not real upset about any of these.  They were all either expected or the spots are very fill-able.

With that said, NIL + transfer portal is really destroying collegiate athletics, as I'm just not interested in supporting these guys to watch them leave after 1 year.  My personal opinion, we should not give portal players a single NIL $1.  If they need NIL to come here, they'll be gone in search of more NIL after 1 year.  Recruit guys who want to be here and play for the coaches.  You want NIL from UND, then stick around and earn it for your junior and senior years.  Also, go film a commercial for Rydell or a local restaurant and actually earn NIL the way it was intended.

Last offseason USD lost three starting offensive linemen, a starting receiver, starting DB and a LB who was their leading tackler to the portal. Then their leading rusher went down with a season-ending injury in September. And obviously now they're the last Dakota team standing. You just never know.

Was just going to say this.. USD was “decimated” in the portal last year. It worked out fine.

UND is building something. Will be interesting to see how all of these guys do wherever they land..,assuming they actually land somewhere.  My guess is all of the guys who left would be better off staying at und and getting real playing time… maybe SS is the outlier.. I can’t imagine there is a huge market for a true freshman QB with zero college experience other than D2 or lower.. I hope they are all listening to good people and not snake oil salesmen..

SS is not an outlier in this.  If the Minnesota rumors are true, he may see the field on special teams and that's about it.
