Penn State dishing out this kind of money for one season of one player is interesting. Paying this kind of money for 40 games does not seem worth it.

Pegula money?

There will be guys that are currently committed to NCAA schools from Major Junior that get drafted in NHL this summer and sign NHL deals and never make it to campus. Leaving NCAA in bad spots.

Good point. These top CHLers who get drafted before their first NCAA game are high reward; but they're also high cost & high risk. Can imagine the hole it would leave in a team's top 6 or top 2 if their expected recruit suddenly bolts. The Jasper Weatherby Effect.

It's worth it when:

a) money is easily available.

and

b) IF you hoist.

B is a tall task for any college program but if Penn State starts tossing money around, watch out.

I did not know the owner of the Sabres is an alum of theirs. Makes a lot of sense. That is pocket change for him.

Don't be surprised to see the Sabres draft a CHLer this June and then "mysteriously", that player ends up at Penn State.

I can’t imagine other NHL owners are going to be thrilled when their top prospect choosing NIL money at Penn State over signing their ELC

NCAA route players have already avoided signing their ELC until done with their NCAA career. Not signing an ELC just pushes back RFA & UFA, which owners and GMs like. Plenty of teams are very supportive of prospects going the NCAA route and developing better instead of rushing into pro.

Offer kid $250k NIL.

AHL salary on two-way ELC: $92.5k.

What could go wrong.

The big money schools will run into cap problems and lose players to free agency.

Lots of RRV kids picked in WHL US draft. Cullen, Kunz and Kraft are familiar names.

There were a bunch of mn kids take  this year. Good to see. Second overall pick from MN

Draft order in WHL draft is getting better with NCAA.  Its still not perfect, but of the kids I know that got drafted, they all belong in the conversation.  Congratulations to every kid that got their number called for a path to the next level.

Joey Cullen would be a top 2 pick if his dad didn't own part of the Force and he wasn't a virtual lock for NTDP.  Kid is an absolute talent and will play hockey for a while.

But how many will actually end up playing there?

Will be interesting to see if they can be convinced this new route is better. The stipend is barely enough to cover a monthly visit compared to having games in the region.
