Admittedly very frustrated at 7 FFs without a Natty. BB gets the crossover Natty basically with Hak's team and he should be acknowledged with that but the other side of the mountain was completely underwhelming.  Sometimes in life you take for granted what's in front of you until it's gone and you see tge other side of the coin. I'd easily take 7 FFs vs 1 tournament win with 4 missed NCAAs thrown in. Watchable hockey with a program that gets back to relevance needs to be the goal.

I guess looking back we kinda now have all the info to answer that age old question for each of us.. what would you want

Make the tourney every year and FF more than not

or

1 natty and a bunch of years missing the tourney.

Sure was fun to have something to get excited about every april.

I am very surprised that the program went in the direction it did under Berry. Berry is a good assistant coach, just not head coaching material.

He is a great guy and human being and I wish him the best.

How many on the list meet the minimum 8 years college or pro coaching experience required in the job posting?

Don't know, but UND need to stop handcuffing themselves behind their backs and actually do a national search. They need to stop with job posting to a specific guy they want. Schneekloth and McFarland would be my top two choices

That is a false choice.

Why do we keep bringing that up?

This is not an either/or proposition.

Denver is always in the hunt, but they also don't lose in the semifinals every time they get there. They finish the job when they have all the pieces in place to do so.

Why do we keep insisting we can have one, but not the other.

SMH.

Wasn’t Hak the king of dump and chase?  I felt we played as possession team the first half of Berry’s tenure.

I can’t remember honestly…our players were so good that it really didn’t matter what system we ran. Much tougher to recruit in this day and age…system ran is super important.

I'm gonna keep beating the Eric Lang drum!

  • 8 seasons of a combination of full-time collegiate or professional hockey coaching experience and/or professional hockey playing experience.

Coincidentally Lang has 8 years of head coaching experience at the collegiate level.

I like Lang, but I don't think he's a great fit because he doesn't have experience recruiting elite prospects and he's spent his entire career out east.  AIC and Atlantic hockey are both just so different than UND and the NCHC... I think he would be a great fit at most of the ECAC schools.  For example, RPI could be a nice fit and they currently have an opening.  If he were to move west, I could perhaps see a fit with a school like Augi if their coach were to move on.  IMO, Lang's situation is similar to Danny Freund's from a year or so ago - he needs to develop a broader range of experience, away from AIC.

I would like Hak back, mostly because I really enjoyed watching his team play and progress, but I think him as a transitional coach to usher in a younger generation would be ideal.  I fail to understand this logic that he can't win it all, he just hasn't yet, its not a simple task that you just choose to do...

If we went back ten years on this board I wonder how much Hak love there would be?

Exactly. Seven Frozen Fours and no hardware.  Lots of people, including me, wanted someone else. Not sure if I’m curious enough to see if he could get it done in a second go at it to actually want to see him behind the bench.

This would make the most sense if we are bringing Hakstol back.

Under Preferred Qualifications is a Masters or Advanced degree.

Lang has a Masters degree in Organizational Development.

I really don't see him in the conversation, given the condensed time frame and lack of connections to the program.  Tell you dad "hi."

been a long time since my education days, but doesn't preferred mean something like optional or secondary criteria?

I also don't get the "inbred" comments some people ad, just seems like an over dramatic phrase to push your writing inside your head.

I was never in on Firing Hak as I thought it was pretty stupid. What happened with Berry is what I feared the most. We sold our soul out for 1 national championship and the rest of the years of mediocrity.

Can we really trust this administration to handle anything properly at this point?

So this has been in the works for awhile to have the job announcement ready and such a short length of time that it’s open

Preferred Qualifications are just that.  Not mandatory.  If you are like me, and a tie goes to UND connections, then you put that in there to prevent the coach not selected complaining that the decision wasn't fair.

The "UND Family" is a big deal.  The culture draws recruits and keeps former players connected which maintains interest and $ coming in.

Hire a coach who doesn't see the value in maintaining those connections (see Lucia at MN) and you can hurt your program.

UND is a small financial fish in a big financial pond with the Big10 and other big schools putting more into hockey.  $ is becoming a huge deal in getting guys from the portal and keeping guys you want to keep.  UND cannot afford to lose the benefits of the UND family.

Doesn't have to be a UND guy to keep it going, but you better hire the right guy.

That would be irony on steroids.

would he need additional staff to make sure he knows the route to the locker room?  he isn't any younger and aging doesn't improve skills like that

I’ll take the Hakstol years over the Berry years any day of the week. Even just winning a round in the tournament every year means you’re a top 8 team which is all you can truly ask for

Hak's NHL experience will be invaluable when he takes this role. He'll be a better coach this go around. I would assume the style of play we play will be different too.

His NHL connections will help with the agents/advisors/recruits.
