Which is why Berry shouldn’t get a pass for our “young” defense which Schlossman went into depth about in his article about veteran and young defense.
Veteran defense is important, but the talent level UND should be able to land should offset that, and if completely true, why didn’t UND go the route of Western, in getting veteran portal players.
If Schlossman is so convinced it is a huge factor, why did he pick UND and Denver so high and those with veteran defense much lower?
I am afraid all of this lipstick on the pig is holding Berry less accountable, and that we need to keep passing the buck to next year or the year after when we have veteran defense.  If you don’t lose a few guys to the pros, you aren’t recruiting and developing well enough.

Ok, so now we DON'T want our home-grown players and DO want older transfers? I'm confused.

Call it whatever you want, "excuse" is fine, but it's very clear UND struggled defensively at times this year in part to poor decisions by young defensemen.

That is inaccurate. I talked to Bennet in Omaha last year. He was in a boot and on crutches. Didn't play in that series for sure.

Yeah he played in 33 of 40 games last year.
Still the vast majority at least.

I hope your prediction is right but this series seems like a split. I know that Israels and Tanner Ludtke are reported as a “maybe” for the series. But I’m guessing that they will almost certainly be in because Gabinet is the kind of coach who would pretend the player is a maybe when they’ve been a full go in practice most of the week. I’ll give it to Berry that he’s honest and doesn’t play around with gamesmanship where we all know coach Stu is happy to do it.

I’m going Split with us winning one in regulation and losing one in OT after getting goalie’d

The bigger issue is puck possession in the ozone…and overall hockey IQ. But absolutely…having younger dmen doesn’t help the whole equation.

For sure. I'm certainly not one to blame everything on it, but it's certainly a factor.

Yes, would not put that past Disco Stu.

Yep.  Exactly what happened.  All three players that were a "maybe" for UNO are starting.

Tanner Ludtke is back for Omaha. He's been out since the first month of the season. Harrison Israels is back, too. He's been out for three weeks. Simon Latkoczy starts in net.

Heading into that last night of NCHC play UND doesn't have one forward in the top 10 scoring race.

#chippaz

Jake is currently at 10.

ASU has four players in the top 10.

This is why I am not all that excited about last night's win. The program remains in a precarious state

You know I haven’t been the one that has an issue with portal players, especially to fill in gaps.  I would argue that with Zmolek’s penchant for injury just by the way he plays the game, you could see what the roster would be if he went down, so why not carry 9 defensemen.
I also have discussed how I don’t think roster management has been nearly as good as it was under Hakstol, and missing the tourney as often as they have suggests that issue.

As far as home grown in the literal sense, are we getting the best local talent?  Dane Montgomery, Casey Johnson, John Simonson versus guys like Drew Montgomery, Mason Salquist, Jacob Benson and Jon Lizotte.  Know that Jon Lizotte was recommended very heavily to the coaching staff.

… and I should add that if people don’t think smart usage of the portal is important, basically 5 of the top 10 scorers in the league are portal players.  Need to get a proven top scorer when you lose the likes of Jackson Blake.

Using the portal to plug holes is what it should be used for. But this staff has leaned on it too much, especially with goaltending.

Sacha and Hampton the only unanimous all-rookie team selections:

F - Max Plante, Minn. Duluth
F - Cullen Potter, ASU
D - Joona Vaisanen, WMU
D - Colin Ralph, SCSU
G - Hampton Slukynsky, WMU (unanimous)

If only we coulda had both Sacha and Hampton. Oh wait, that was possible 🤣

That’ll go down as a big miss. The older brother seems to be thriving at WMU too.

Really? How do you explain Western Michigan and their use of portal transfers or decommitments? The leading scorer is Alex Bump, who decommitted from Vermont, Grant Slukynsky who is a portal transfer from Northern Michigan, his brother Hampton (G) who decommitted from Northern Michigan, Matteo Costantini who is a portal transfer from UND, Brian Kramer who is a portal transfer from AIU, Robby Drazner who is a portal transfer from Miami, Cameron Rowe (G) who is a portal transfer from Wisconsin and Tristan Lemyre who is a portal transfer from DU? Has WMU leaned too heavily on portal transfers? How about Michigan State and their leading scorer, Will Howard (UMD)? How about Denver and Pohlkamp, Tristan Broz or Cameron Wright?

You also fail to mention that UND has had some very good players who came via the transfer portal. How would UND have been without Connor Ford, Caleb McDonald, Garrett Pyke, Bennett Zmolek, Chris Jandric and even Zach Driscoll and TJ?

Many programs have benefitted from the transfer portal, and it is not limited to hockey. Jahmyr Gibbs came to Alabama from Georgia Tech, etc.

Yes, really.

I wonder if there are any other AHA All Stars Berry will bring in for next year?

You must be just a joy to hang around with. A raincloud looking for a parade.

You may be content with the current state of the program, but I am not.

And we haven't had a reason to have a "parade" for any UND program in years.

I don't believe in sugar coating the truth because it is unpalatable.
