MafiaMan Posted October 31, 2022 Posted October 31, 2022 So being as I brought it up in another post, I want to ask people here: What is your take on the ENGELSTAD warmup jerseys from Saturday night? Quote

The Sioux “legends” bobble head collection also includes our school’s most famous backup goalie. I had to explain to my kids two weeks ago the two retired numbers…one to honor the tragic loss of a player and the other to honor a guy who donated a ton of money to build the arena. The ENGELSTAD jerseys on the ice are it for me. Over the top hero-worship. I appreciate his financial gift to UND as much as anyone else - absolutely amazing - but this isn’t the ENGELSTAD UNIVERSITY hockey program. Edited October 31, 2022 by MafiaMan Edit: Casey played on the “freshman” team and did not win the national championship during his time on the “varsity” team. 3 4 Quote

We can appreciate his financial gifts and his love for the hockey program but it just seems to me like UND and the hockey program are puppets to Kerry Engelstad. This "hero" appreciation that they do for him is a slap in the face to every other player that has played at UND and actually contributed to the success of the program. Quote
Sioux>Bison Posted October 31, 2022 Posted October 31, 2022 The jerseys are over the top. I don’t mind the rest of the items because we would not have the amazing arena without him. Keep putting his name from and center constantly is nothing but an ego stroking. Are we going to worship him like a god for the rest of time? It’s just bad taste to do it during this destination game. 1 Quote

The jerseys themselves are cool and designed nice but put Vegas '22 on the back like they did for Nashville last year. You are correct, we probably wouldn't have an amazing arena without him and I'm fine with the arena being call the Ralph Engelstad Arena (has a nice ring to it) but it's the rest of the bullcrap that has come with it. The Vegas destination games are to stroke her ego and to let Vegas casino owners know that she's still around. Out of all the destination games that have gone on in the past ten years, there is no reason we have gone to Vegas twice. If we are playing these destination games to expand our footprint and expose new people to UND hockey, why go to the same place twice? Also, guess who the host school is when the Frozen Four goes to Las Vegas in 2026 1 1 Quote
FightingSU Posted October 31, 2022 Posted October 31, 2022 Look at all of our opinions. How many hundreds of millions of $ have you donated to the program? (with continued support) - Ya'll are Nit Picking because we lost and you want to blame it on someone. People just love to rag on someone with lots of money. SNORE 2 Quote

SNORE Nope, I think this university and REA in particular do more than enough to kiss the a** of its long-deceased biggest donor. The old pregame light show with 23’s flying all over the ice was over the top early on, now it continues 20 years after the man’s death with his name and number on the back of jerseys worn for 15:00 of pre-game warmups. 2 Quote

SNORE Far from nit picking because of a lose. I'll say it again in case you missed it but my disdain for her comes from the fact that her stubbornness and unwillingness to adapt has kept the advancement of the nickname of the university. If they want to use the nickname and culture as an excuse than we should have stayed as the flickertails. Also, when I donate to the University, I don't dictate to them how to use the funds and if they don't use them the way I want or fire the people I want, that I will withhold funds. 1 Quote

mikejm Posted October 31, 2022 Posted October 31, 2022 Note that the Engelstad family didn't donate the arena to the University; it is still owned by the Engelstad Foundation, and his daughter runs that foundation. Quote

They signed a new usage agreement here back in 2020 due to the university being unable to run it the way it should be ran, which is the big problem. I know the arena needs money to stay up to date but after all the bills are paid and some money goes to a rainy day fund, the rest of the money goes elsewhere and this is where the rest of the teams get screwed. 1 Quote

Because it’s like saying that at University of Alabama, the football team gets the majority of the sports funding and thinking there’s something wrong with that. Yeah. It’s the marquis sport for that school.. it’s a football school. We are a hockey school. I don’t think the Alabama Lacrosse program should get equal funding to the Bama Football program. 1 2 Quote

Now that you mention it, have you ever seen the Crimson Tide run onto the football field with their school’s biggest donor’s name on the back of their jerseys? Just curious. 1 Quote
