you have been the loudest, most critical person on here for years and you want Beau Baldwin as the next coach.  comical

A former FCS national champion head coach is pretty comical, huh? Okay then.

I’d be most excited for Beau Baldwin given what he accomplished at Eastern Washington, but I’m okay with one of the proven DII head coaches:

- Bolte (Bemidji State)

- Olszewski (Augustana)

- Hoffner (Minnesota State)

Pipe-dreams:

- Tony Annese (Ferris State)

- heck, why not Paul Simmons (Harding)

Man…we’ve agreed on so much on this board over the last couple years…but I have to respectfully disagree on Baldwin here…

I’m okay with the others successful as a DII head coach or FCS/FBS coordinator. Need someone will proven track record and vision to elevate UND football to the next level.

The knock on Baldwin's EWU squads was questionable lines, especially the DL. That is muy no bueno in the MVFC; we've seen that.

He’d have a much better OL/DL recruiting pipeline here in the Midwest compared to the West Coast …

And he knows how to recruit and coach the quarterbacks, which last I checked is still a pretty damn important position.

When was he good at that?  Where and what years?

Can't find one ...

And people wonder why UND football takes a backseat to hockey in coverage.  Pretty big news for this program and here we are........nothing.  Not even in the backseat anymore.  In the back bench of the station wagon facing backwards!!

I’m not this guy’s biggest cheerleader by any means, and there are definitely other potential candidates out there just as good and perhaps even better, but:

- he coached the QBs and was OC at EWU from 2003-2006. He coached QB Erik Meyer who won the 2005 Walter Payton Award (for most outstanding player in FCS).

- he then was head coach at EWU starting in 2008, and coached Bo Levi Mitchell, who won the national championship in 2010 and also the Walter Payton Award in 2011.

- then coached Vernon Adam afterwards, an undersized , under-recruited quarterback (sound familiar to UND’s QBs?) to freshman of the year honors in 2012. Adams also was coached well by Baldwin and beat #25 Oregon State in 2014.

A lot less accolades over the past 10 years unfortunately.

His WR recruiting is actually much more impressive.

lines were aweful and defenses were average at best. If defense is a knock on Schmidt it certainly is a huge knock on Baldwin.  Line okay was kind of non existent.  Game was simply score more points which he was very good at in wide open west coast football.

I’ll give the benefit if Vigen can adjust to the BigSky a coach like Baldwin could likely adjust to MVFC.

And what connections does have to recruiting the Midwest where all those lineman are?

Hasn't Vigen just brought a MVFC flavor to Montana State instead of trying to adjust to the Big Sky?

Not sure, but he’s been a coach for a while, and been at FBS programs. I’m sure he’s networked and worked with several other coaches who know the Midwest and are from the Midwest.

Schmidt hasn’t won a national championship as a head coach, but I understand your concerns. No perfect candidate, just need to get the best one.

Yes...and it's why MSU is where it's at...winning football from the trenches out.

No argument on what he accomplished at EWU. It is the last statement (along with lack of ties to this region) that has me concerned.
I would assume that his connection to the AD is the only reason he's being mentioned as a candidate (which is a fair reason he is being included).

Fair to say something similar about Schmidt, his connection to UND is likely the only reason he would even consider it. Still think his time away, a very successful run under DeBoer, is a huge positive.
