No one said facilities win games. I responded to  a question about Armacost supporting athletics. The University Admin/Alumni/Fans/Supporters have provided the facilities and resources to be a successful FB program.

I know what Bubba said at the press conference but I’ve never heard the president, nor the AD vocalizing limiting our expectations to making the playoffs. We can talk about expectations all we want but until we improve recruiting, retention, and performance on the field, we will struggle to meet even limited expectations.

I’m not sure anyone can predict next years chances until we know for sure who will be coaching, who we lose or gain in the portal, and what happens to our committed recruits regardless of who the head coach is.

When asked about UND leadership (President and AD) and their opinion on athletics, you mentioned;

“He understands the benefits of intercollegiate athletic as well as the challenges. He wants our programs to be successful and sees how it can bring alumni and other supporters to campus and alumni gatherings at athletic events. “

And then you mentioned facilities as the change, but the results in competition are the ultimate metric per the masses, as for attendance of games, not facilities on campus. And excellence via results has been evasive. It’s okay to be critical, as constructive criticism is far more beneficial than justifying all decisions made.

Expectations matter. There’s a trickle down effect to everyone. It starts from the top. High expectations lead to better recruiting, and a standard to make the correct decisions during the game, and to put in the work during the week (as failing to prepare is preparing to fail). Right now, there are no lofty expectations and as such there is no accountability. Also, not surprisingly, no championship results. And yes that goes along with a lack of championship recruiting and development.

And if Bubba’s expectations (make playoffs) don’t align with the expectations of Chaves and Armacost (supposedly per you to perhaps do more), then why did Chaves extend Schweigert? That’s essentially an endorsement of philosophy.

Lastly, it’s easy to predict, @iramurphy. Use the past to predict the future. Schweigert has adequate sample size. C’mon, man, you’re trying too hard. The University let down UND football alumni, supporters, and others today, although argument could be made it was a year ago when they extended the decrepit current head coach. There’s behind closed doors endorsements going on that are blatantly senile and corrupt, but I’ll leave it at that. It’s preposterous to make such accusations, I know, I know, but where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.

I was stating evidence as to positive changes under Armacost with regards to his support for athletics. The  facilities and resources are there for the program to be successful. The coaches and players need to make that happen. I’ve said before I didn’t support the extension and I didn’t support the initial hire. I support the program and the University. There is nothing I can do about the present coaching dilemma including trying to explain or justify the extension.

The accusation of endorsements, senility and corruption are serious. If you have proof, PM me.  I will be happy to go with you to the president so you may enlighten him. Otherwise please don’t do that kind of crap.

I want a coach with zero ties to UND or North Dakota.  I want someone who knows how to recruit, who knows how to motivate and inspire your athletes, but most importantly someone who knows how to WIN!!  Need to stop bringing coaches in who "know the culture" at UND. Well you know what, that culture has been underachieving for far too long.  This program, its fans, and the payers and future commits deserve better.  The next football coach hire may be the most important coaching hire in school history.  Make a good one, and it changes the trajectory of this program back to WINNING.  Winning games consistently against the other Dakota schools.  Winning on the road.  Winning Conference Championships.  Winning in the playoffs.  Winning National Championships.    That is what this program desperately needs.  Sooner rather than later.

(Is that too much to ask? ;))

Wish I could like this post more than once.

The accusations are ambiguous for good reason. Concrete proof would have led to action already. But, as predicted, you yield to absolutely no possibility of corruption, and shield with belittlement. It’s ironically a microcosm of the culture that UND athletics is beginning to foster all too well, I’m afraid. There will be no success until the issues are cleared.

Maybe your “expectations “ are too low if you don’t think those issues (unbeknownst to others) can’t be “cleared”.
If you somehow feel “belittled” I will let others respond to your posts.

There's always been allegations of some sinister plot within the confines of UND athletics as to how Bubba got the job and how he's been able to keep it with limited success.

It's like there truly is a GOBC. Name names, give us all some enlightenment. I have no clue what the truth is here.

As my mother would tell me, It could be worse. I see the LSU buyout for Kelly would be 61 million dollars.

Chaves is a genius!!

My “expectations” have been high, but they adjust with reality also. I think the issues can be cleared, but as has been a major barrier in the past, the rate of clearance continues to be a problem. I don’t “somehow feel belittled”, but I do think the approach and tone - which is a product of culture - needs to be adjusted and improved for UND athletics.

Thank you for providing additional context and clarification. I agree with this post, and in essence, it is also what I have attempted to communicate. The expectations for UND FB are clearly being altered, and the reasoning behind that should be a focus point in qualitative process improvement efforts for UND athletics, namely football, moving forward.

Accusations without evidence are not useful. If you're going to make a claim, back it up with something.

Always fair. Would go as far as saying unnamed individuals are propagating mediocrity for UND football. Choosing personal relationships over the effectiveness of the overall football program is such an example. It may be considered an example of corruption, or at the very least a conflict of interest.

Oh well. Onward. Time will hopefully heal this problem.

In my opinion this is partially true - In my opinion the GOBC is not an organized entity with meetings etc. - more of a loose group of Bubba's and his brother's contemporaries and family - many older athletes who played with his brother and some older businessmen who were big Sioux boosters pushed for his hire and whose opinion at the time had influence with the Athletic Department.  I was personally lobbied a couple of times by some I knew whose pitch was "he bleeds Sioux Green".  How he keeps his job is a mystery known only the Chaves - whose tenure is a disaster.  Not naming names as what they did was their right to do and totally within bounds and was nothing sinister.   However the results speak for themselves and it looks like they are very reluctant to call for his firing.

Fans frustrations can change shift to shift, period to period and game to game. Our facilities are as good as it gets but no longer the advantage we had 20yrs ago.
I’m not so sure we won’t be pretty tough by playoffs. Let’s get everyone back before giving up. They’ve shown flashes of promise especially game 1 against BU. As usual, goaltending must improve and be consistent. However, Just my gut feeling. More than other sports, I dont think the best team always wins.

FB is different. There are a million obstacles to overcome to fix this now.  We can’t afford another season like this and I fear portal losses and decommitments are threatening to put us further behind.

I believe the portal will be brutal.

If you think Bill Chaves giving Bubba an extension was crazy, Jerry Jones is considering giving Mike McCarthy a new contract in Dallas.

I think Jerry Jones is losing his mind. The younger Jones would have sent McCarthy packing after last season's playoff flameout. This Jerry Jones has convinced himself that the Cowboys are on the cusp of winning the Super Bowl and just need a few more pieces. Not that I am complaining or anything.

The nice thing for Bubba is that he can now nap the whole offseason, because there is no reason for him to put in any more effort recruiting.   If you are lazy in team meetings, you are lazy on the recruiting trail too.  It shows by the lack of difference makers he has recruited, even with the improved facilities.

Bubba Schweigert and UND football being mentioned in similar circumstances as Jerry Jones and the current Dallas Cowboys tells you all you need to know about the current state of UND football …

I will say, though, it’s a fair comparison in some aspects.

After watching his last press conference. There is definitely a disconnect with Bubba and his recruits and fans. This whole time he was thinking that everyone's expectations is to make the playoffs. That explains everything! His expectations are lower than the fans and more importantly his football players. As far as hockey and football....everyone's expectations should be to win championships. If not....what the hell are we doing here.

I did like the part where he stated that everyone's position/job would be open and that they should compete for the starting position.....does that include his job?

I’m so sick of hearing the talking point of making the playoffs 4 out of the last 6 years and 4 out of the last 5 before this year. How much does that mean in FCS football if you are losing in the first round?

His comments in the last presser were disappointing for the reasons you mentioned. However there are plenty of previous examples of him stating the goal is to compete for a MVFC title which puts you in the hunt for a NC. Definitely aren't there right now.
Assuming he was speaking directly to the disappoint of the collapse this year and missing the playoffs, however If his mindset on that has actually changed, that would actually be a significant discussion to be had with the AD/President.

I think your summary regarding the initial hiring is spot on. I’m not sure about the “many” older guys but I wouldn’t know. I was never lobbied nor asked my opinion.  It ls pretty normal for people to lobby for the hiring of a friend or family member.

For whatever reason Bubba was extended. I think that surprised a lot of people but at this time it is what it is. I can’t speak for others but although his supporters may not be demanding he be fired, quite a few wish he would step down. If it wouldn’t cost so much, I think more people would be more vocal.
