Who would UND hire?

At UND I 100% believe that a program needs to be abandoned & given up on by fans for a change to be made.  Chaves is quite obviously OK with poor to average records for his programs.  If people keep showing up and supporting these mediocre programs he will do nothing but keep it going.

Name one hire that Chaves has made that has worked out in any meaningful way.

You can't........unless you are fine with all the mediocrity. I am not with it.

I, like most, really only follow hockey and football.

Which he didn't hire. So there's really no point to be made there.

If one is the actual AD for a day, the reasonable thing would to tell Bubba....

Next year (2025) will be your last unless you meet these parameters...like winning a playoff game.

And if your Bubba you go "f, that's hard I've only ever done it once in 10 years!"

I would argue that extending Bubba 2x is the same as hiring him.

Attendance at the last two games should be pretty telling already. You have SDSU and USD at home to end the year and there was no energy in the building and lots of empty seats.

Not really.

You could argue, it's the same as not firing him.

Ain't no one firing a head coach that made the FCS playoffs 4 out of the last 5 years like Bubba has before this season.

That's what were gonna blame Chaves for? lol

You have fully explained the mindset of UND Football and the Athletic Department.  How exciting.

And it was 4 of the last 6.

Making the playoffs in a severely watered-down down FCS is not a great accomplishment. There are high schools in Texas with higher expectations for their FB team than there is here.

To each their own.

Ideal? Nope.

Fireable offense though? Far from it.

UND President: "Why didn't you fire fire the head coach of Football program for only making the playoffs last year?!"

Your question would not be posed obviously. It would be more like:

“are we really going to extend a 62 year old who has never won a playoff game in 10 season?”

He has won a playoff game.

Ok got it, you would have fired the head football coach last year after the playoff loss.

A season in which UND beat NDSU.

Little strange to me but to each their own.

If you have been following along at all you would know we are all questioning why they EXTENDED him last spring, when they just flamed out in playoffs yet again and he is 62.

Now we know why.  Because you cannot extend him now after going 5-7.  So Chaves took the path of least resistance like usual.

Huh?

That's how paying people works.

You fire or extend.

You would have fired him.

The reason is he made them playoffs and beat NDSU. So they decided not to fire him.

You really didn't know why they extended him?!

There were two years left.  We have covered this.  Win and you get your extension.  Lose and we need to move on.

Its been 11 years.

Oh that's just a part of normal contract talks.

You usually start working on a new contract during your current contract.

In Bubbas case, it's always been "2 year extensions." We know he won't make it that long but now his current contract expires at the end of 2027.

So when 2026 comes around they would have begun working on another 2 year extension (usually in case the process takes longer than hoped.)

I don't necessarily like it either; but thats the way it usually works, and coaches usually will start to look for other options near "lame duck" contract years.

Quote

If Schweigert is fired without cause prior to the end of his contract, UND will owe Schweigert 100 percent of his base salary for the first 24 months. UND will pay 75 percent of his base salary for Months 25-36 and 50 percent for Months 37 to 48.

If he were to be fired and Schweigert then receives athletics-related compensation elsewhere, UND would owe Schweigert the difference between his new salary and his UND contract.

They build in "safe guards" in the contract if they decide to fire Bubba.

"Bubba we will pay you zero if we fire you."

"No" "ok partial"....and so forth as negotiations go....hence why it could take some time.

Let's not pretend most people were upset with this extension at the time:

To sum it up here are my thoughts: I am fine with the extension. I am also fine with it because I am assuming conversations have taken place about “how do we get over the hump?” – “What needs to change?” Chaves brought in Derek Stein to take over the strength and conditioning program. The football program has consistently peaked mid-season only to be playing average football when it mattered most. Does a new approach in training help with that? We will see.

You got any more questions why they extended him?

Adding a new strength coach seems a bit light. My biggest fear was losing this fall and being stuck.  Here we are.

Yeah it sucks we're all frustrated with how the season played out.

I'm sure Chaves is gonna sit down with Bubba and discuss the season.

And there's a real possibility he sucks again next year and he losses his job.

Chaves likely trying to gather some funds from ex football players (amongst others) to buy out his contract should it come to that.

The seat is definately getting warmer for Bubba.

IMO, He's getting a "C" grade, the edge of being fired. But just good enough to not be fired.

We need to ask ourselves where is the line for next year?

Mine is a playoff win. Anything less than that: time to try someone else.
