Name change and WCHA breakup nothing feels quite like Nodak hockey anymore. Not making excuses, but not playing for the history and honor of a name as we used to things are out of whack and we are just like any other team out there now.

The nickname won us 7 titles. The players were just along for the ride.

UND will always be the "Fighting Sioux" to me but to suggest that the nickname is anything other than a nickname is absurd.  The program is the University of North Dakota...  always has been and always will.

Nothing but trolling here...please shut this down.

yeah its trolling.......

but its not wrong...

an arguement could be made its a unethical correlation of data sets...

but its not wrong.

The hockey team is regressing back to the mediocrity of the other programs, to the  glee of the usual suspects on here.

My take is those types have never been part of a successfull team or been a part of something greater than their own shortcomings. They don't understamd what having an ethos or a creed means.

Say what you want about this idea of a lack of an identity..... given what we can see... the debate gets us nowhere... but

Its not wrong.

Must have forgotten about that awesome national title season a couple years ago.

To think that title wasnt won on the creed and deep admoration of the Sioux mantra of tradition of excellence is foolish.

Those players lived breathed and bled Sioux...

No matter what the program said the name was.

I dont think thats true of this years team.

This is ridiculous....my thought is they were playing good old tyme 'Flickertail ' hockey....name?? Mantra???? Good grief....get a grip on reality!!!!

It's players and coaching that spells success....true of all sports....do you think Belichek gives a rip that the name changed from 'Boston to New England'? Or how about the Lakers moving from Minneapolis to LA....it's not name, or even location....it's players and coaching...that wins championships....

I would also say the difference in what you're seeing vs 10 years ago is the new style of play.  There is no more hitting, no more face washing, etc.  The after whistle stuff is gone.  Leads to a mote sterile game IMO.

GF Central won back to back state titles...must be the Redskin name they lived, breathed, and bled. Even though it’s been gone since 1991.

Read Romeo and Juliet, Act II, Scene ii, lines 43 and 44.   Then have someone explain them to you.

I am not giving up on the team and didn't intend for this conversation to go this way, but doesn't anybody else feel this huge change with the overall program since the new arena, conference, name. Just feels like there is less passion in the program, definitely not questioning us fans though but with everything so much bigger it is simply going through the motions and thinking winning will come easy and then it doesn't and college hockey is more of a stepping stone for the next level which us fans are okay with but us die hards want the UND to win more than anything else.

Is our program too big that these smaller schools are where they draw players that are more likely to get it done now? Look at the bigger more traditional teams from the past with rich traditions that aren't making it now. I personally don't think it is old time North Dakota hockey and think that line is just a way to keep the traditions they know are slipping away.

REA opened in 2001, NCHC started in 2013, and the new name started in 2015, since that time we won a national title (2016), lost the national title game (2005), missed the NCAA tournament (2002), won the NCHC regular season twice (2015 and 2016), made the NCAA Frozen Four 8 times, won the conference tournament 4 times, was conference regular season champions 5 times. Not to mention the countless players that moved to the next level, and the multiple sellouts. But yeah there is no passion here, better axe it and bring back women’s hockey.

We aren’t going to play for a National Title every year, nor are we going to win it every year since we have won 8 national titles in over 70 years of hockey thats one title per almost 9 years on average. From 1964-1979 zero titles. From 80-87 we won it 3 times. 88-96 zero titles, from 97-00 we won it twice. 2001-2015 zero titles. See a pattern. It happens in every sport, college and pro. Tradition isn’t slipping away, we have one of the richest if not “THE” richest tradition of men’s college hockey in the country. I think you are overreacting on this season, this team historically bounces back and bounces back strong, and why, because we have the cathedral of an arena, we have the best hockey fanbase in the country, and we have 8 NC banners hanging in the REA which only Michigan can say they have more. Things will turnaround and we will be back.

We should look back on threads from 2002 and see what went on here on ss.com.  :)

I wonder how many people blamed the new Sioux logo on that down season. Bring back the geometric logo.;)
