After the kick off Pellini got two unsportsmanlike penalties in a row. The refs got a police escort off the field. It looked like Pellini was going to get out of hand. geaux_sioux Posted November 16, 2015 Author Share Posted November 16, 2015 I just wanted to highlight how dominant our defense was against a pretty good UNC offense. Obviously we had three picks and 2 fumble recoveries. We wanted it more and put them into the fetal position in the second quarter. We also finally scored a defensive TD. So we gave up 275 yards, that's really good. 170 passing yards and 105 rushing yards. Our d backs FINALLY had them locked down and were a strength instead of a liability. Things seemed to have finally clicked for these guys. They now have confidence. This is huge for our team defense. No longer can teams count on max protection and chuck and duck passing to beat us. Throw it deep if you wish but it's at best 50/50 now where it used to seem like 90/10 in favor of the WR. Back to the yards. I'd like to point out that they only scored on our third string guys. Two late drives, the only points they scored. As for the yards those last two drives accounted for 139 of the 275 yards allowed total. In other words, the starters gave up 136 yards.... 136 total yards to a team with a pretty decent offense. That's pretty damn good and a sign of what our defense is capable when relatively healthy. This same UNC team just put up 35 on Portland State with 483 yards of offense. We were lights out yesterday. The third string defense gave up 83 rushing yards on those last two drives. That means the starters and second string guys only gave up 22 rushing yards. Even better is the pass defense stats. The starters and second string only gave up 114 passing yards. I don't recall a game in years where we were so dominant against both the run and pass. It seemed to be the norm where we as fans would cross our fingers hoping the other team would be dumb enough to try and run the ball. The offensive fumbles or lack of, are a definite positive and the 5 ints for the d in two weeks is even better. The talent is there in the secondary, now they are proving themselves. Our freshman and sophomore classes are absolutely loaded with talented guys already contributing in big ways. On D next year we will lose our heart and soul Rattelle but because of all the injuries UND will essentially be returning 11 starters on d with plenty of reserves with starting experience. Offense will need to replace 3 ol and adler but the online is starting to build depth. Grady and Stockwell both have next level potential imo and will be two of the best tackles in the conference. Passing game should only get better, with Dulin, a health Clive, and Toivenen (If the pull the redshirt), maybe Iwarri to WR. Keaton will have another year under his belt. Defense will only improve, especially in the secondary, and we should get Arnell back. Running game, we know how good that should be.We'll need to be good. We start the season with a much tougher opponent that Wyoming. Bowling Green has had a tremendous year. They will lose their Sr QB, but have Jr right behind him that played most of last season. I believe they also lose some SR receivers and running backs. But if I have learned anything in watching UND this year, it is that I can believe in the team to compete. Go Sioux! There's so much potential for UND football, but it requires both community and administrative support to complement Bubba's passion and hard work. Faison needs to be willing to place quality bids, improve coaching salary, and secure HPC Phase II funding, whereas the community needs to show up and support the team during home outings. Considering the noise that has been generated this season (averaging only around 8000), an average crowd of 10,000+ would be a tremendous home-field advantage. If UND football could get the Alerus back to where it was during the 2001 playoff run (namely the UC Davis game) and those subsequent DII seasons, then UND football would not only be good, but would be a heavy favorite for every home game (including potential playoff games!).
