This game is actually nice timing.  Maybe work on some things, boys should cruise through this next game if they work hard.

Still no updates on Mac.  I read a Habs blog which noted another Habs prospect suffered the same injury and he has already been ruled out for the rest of the season.  I'm hoping Mac got lucky.  That would be a huge blow for this team in the long run and also his career.  I have always thought he is such a good player however injuries have hit him so hard.

If he's out for the season, I wonder if he would apply for a medical waiver and come for a 5th year?

I know it's early, but who knows.

He wouldn't have to "apply". You have five academic years to complete four seasons of competition. He never redshirted so his "academic years" clock is on four.

A season "counts" if you play in more than 30% of scheduled games or if you play in any game in the second half of the season. (Mark's used three "seasons of competition".)

Given that MarkMac played in six games (5 plus exhibition) so far, and that there are more than 30 games on the schedule this isn't a "season of competition" for him yet.

Would he want to come back? Would he need to (would Habs want him to) to make sure he's healed?

But we are way ahead of ourselves on this.

Let's see where he's at when he's cleared by his doctors. Given that they did surgery right away, I suspect he has some significant OT/PT to get through.

Thanks for the explanation.

A bit of a "trap" game for UND this weekend.  Unheralded opponent.  UND coming off of an important non-conference series with a top 5 ranked opponent.  Big series against an old rival the following weekend.  No time for slip ups.  UND's non-conference opponents are a combined 4-27-1 right now (3-25 without the UND games).  We've had the one loss we can afford against them (if we could even afford that one.)

Trap game? No way.

This is an opportunity game for the guys looking to solidify roster spots now that Mark MacMillan is out indefinitely.

If those guys don't show up and perform they deserve to get beat.

Harsh. Yes. True. Yes.

Someone has to try to fill Mac's role, and I agree this would be a good game for that person to step forward.  I didn't see anyone jumping up yelling "Pick me! Pick me!" Saturday.

Side, but somewhat related, note; I still don't understand St.Claire sitting Saturday.  Any injury news I've missed?  I talked to his mom briefly after the game, but didn't want to ask.

Chyzyk has stepped up big time.  If St. Clair sits again and it's a healthy scratch I'm placing a call to the GOBC to contact Hak on my behalf.  Really not sure if Murphy needs to see the ice again for awhile. Olson will be one of the top 4 forwards on this team come February.

Defensively how does Keaton get time? For who?

This may sounds crazy, and I am fully expecting to get roasted for this, but, is there any chance we move Thompson up front? He's quite dynamic.

More than likely, I'm nuts, but, just seeing if anyone will bite. :)

Definitely agree on Chyzyk, but he's already an every game player (should be anyway), I'm looking for Murphy, or Sanderson, or even Panzarella to step up and stand out.

I think Olson stays in the lineup for now. He's been impressive. Defensively, there seems to be no wrong play. St. Clair had to have been injured. He had a nice game Friday night, especially on the PK. Just like Chyzyk, very tenacious when they play with speed.

Air Force won't be a cakewalk, they tend to play an aggressive style. It should be an entertaining game.

Reliable sources say Easy Mac is out for four weeks. Skate went across the top of his left wrist and cut the tendon by his thumb. Could be more depending on recovery.

Man, I hope that source is spot on. Four weeks is not bad at all. Only 7 games during those four weeks. Albeit four of them are against SCSU and Miami. There's some important NCHC points to be had in those back-to-back weekends.

Dr Phil on 740 (yes, I get 740 in Williston) said if it's on the top or side of the hands, it's better than the underside. He said thumb side could be a complication, which makes sense.

Left handed shot, left wrist*, so the bottom hand. Someone should be working on re-enforcing a glove (and extending the cuff) right now.

*Which hand is out there in the national media already so I'll break my normal rule about not talking specifically about an injury.

I believe that he would still have to apply for the 5th year.  If you start playing games, the year counts.  That's why redshirt players are not allowed to play in a single game.  However, they will normally give the 5th year if less than 30% of the games are played because of injury and if the player is unable to play at all in the 2nd half of the season (and if the player did not redshirt earlier).  If Mark can't return this season, and if he wants to return, there is a very good chance he would get the 5th year.

We're playing semantics with the word "apply" I suspect.

As things stand now, Mark qualifies for the medical provision (this season not counting as a "season of competition") if he doesn't play another game. It'd be allowed per NCAA rules as written. To me that's not "apply" (meaning ask for); it's a notification to the NCAA that we're enacting and following this rule as written.

One would "apply" (ask for) a sixth season for some athletes under unique circumstances (and that's why those are rare).
