Why would SDSU, USD and SDSU make it easy on them and keep their other sports in the Summit? Quote
The Sicatoka Posted May 15, 2024 Author Posted May 15, 2024 If NDSU went Indy FBS FB, who's going to bankroll teams to come in so they have a home schedule. Quote

The Sicatoka Posted May 15, 2024 Author Posted May 15, 2024 For a team to count as a member of an FBS conference you must be an all-sports member. A FB only doesn't count toward the 7 full members to be classified as an FBS conference. To be taken on as FB only you have to bring some other benefit like in Hawai'i's case you get to play an extra (assume home) game to pay for the trip. Quote
AJS Posted May 15, 2024 Posted May 15, 2024 Love the St. Thomas addition. I do hope these leads to the Summit League absorbing the NCHC as well as a Summit League Football conference. That would be a big deal on multiple fronts. 3 Quote

Would another benefit be that it could motivate Mankato to finally move up for all sports? They are the best fit for the league, and they are perfect for the footprint. They also happen to have a great hockey program. I seriously wonder if SCSU will be able to continue sponsoring hockey at a high level given the institutional issues they have. 2 Quote

SiouxHawkGuy Posted May 15, 2024 Posted May 15, 2024 So how long before the MAC schools go to the CCHA and Bemidji St and Minnesota St become Summit league hockey affiliates? Quote

What do bemidji and mankato add to the nchc/summit hockey. No thanks. Western is a solid program that adds a good recruiting area. If Miami wants to leave I don't see an issue with negotiating a lower exit fee. Keeping a non competitive program does the league no good. 1 1 Quote

If they moved up they would certainly drop football a la Omaha as the dollars aren't there. Summit is most likely to pick WAC carcass or be destroyed itself. The number of viable move ups at this point is very small. 2 Quote

If the Summit adds Hockey and Mankato, it would have the numbers in other sports so it wouldn't HAVE to take the Utah schools in order to survive. The league would be stable. 2 Quote

Kab Posted May 19, 2024 Posted May 19, 2024 Did you notice how he said that he didn’t think ndsu or sdsu would want to DRAG UND or USD with to the new conference with some of the big sky schools. mcfooley is so full of himself. somehow he thinks his stature will increase if ndsu is fbs. go ahead ndsu, make the jump as an independent. 3 Quote

It ain't happening. --------------------------------------------- Mike McFeely: What if the top teams in the Valley and the top teams in the Big Sky formed an FCS super-conference, with the hope it would position those schools to move to the G5 together if that opportunity ever presented itself? And even if they got stiffed from the G5, wouldn't an FCS super-conference still be more interesting and a better option than playing in the same league with the Murray States, Indiana States, Northern Colorados and Cal Polys of the world? Since the Valley and Big Sky wouldn't cease to exist, maybe the new league could fall under the banner of the Summit League and commissioner Josh Fenton, who has fans among the Dakotas schools that are members of the Valley and Summit. The chances of this actually happening are zero. Or less. But that would be one heck of an FCS football conference. And Summit League basketball would be a blast, too. Imagine NDSU, South Dakota State, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Montana State, Idaho, Weber State and Sacramento State in the same conference. The Sheet isn't sure if NDSU and SDSU would want to do this because they'd drag along UND and USD and we're pretty sure they don't want to do that. The Sheet believes NDSU, for sure, would prefer to go FBS by themselves and at most partner with SDSU. The Sheet, too, realizes SDSU, Montana and Montana State might have no interest in spicing things up because their fan bases seem to remain at a fever pitch. The degradation of the FCS with James Madison, Sam Houston and others moving up only seems to concern people in Fargo. 1 Quote
